Best Calico Build & Guide (2026) — Deadlock
Saturday, March 21, 2026 · 8 min read
Calico is Deadlock's most feared roaming assassin. Armed with her Sphynx cat familiar Ava and a kit built for burst damage and slippery escapes, she hunts down enemies one by one before vanishing into the shadows. Whether you're picking her up for the first time or looking to optimize your ranked build, this guide covers everything you need to dominate with Calico in 2026.
Calico Overview
Calico excels as a spirit-damage assassin who roams the map looking for isolated kills. Her ability chain — Gloom Bombs into Leaping Slash into Return to Shadows — can delete squishy targets before they can react. She's weakest in the early laning phase but becomes a constant threat once she starts rotating with Ava.
Strengths
- Devastating burst combos that one-shot squishy heroes
- Unmatched roaming speed through Ava's mobility and map traversal
- Slippery and hard to pin down with Return to Shadows and Leaping Slash resets
- Snowball potential — early kills accelerate her into an unstoppable mid game
Weaknesses
- Weak laning phase with limited wave clear early on
- Squishy and easily punished if abilities are on cooldown
- Vulnerable to crowd control and reveal effects
- Falls off against coordinated teams that group and peel for carries
Recommended Item Build
Based on data from over 14,000 ranked Calico matches tracked on dodge.gg, here's the highest winrate build path.
Early Game (0–10 min)
- Melee Lifesteal — Essential sustain for jungle farming and lane trades with Leaping Slash
- Spirit Strike — Adds spirit damage and sustain on ability hits, boosting your combo
- Mystic Burst — Core spirit damage for your Gloom Bombs and ability chain
- Extra Spirit — Cheap spirit power spike that improves all your abilities early

Mid Game (10–20 min)
- Cold Front — Spirit damage slow that prevents targets from escaping your combo
- Torment Pulse — AoE spirit damage that adds pressure in teamfights and accelerates farm
- Mystic Vulnerability — Amplifies spirit damage on your target, making combos lethal
- Reactive Barrier — Survivability when you dive into the backline for a kill

Late Game (20+ min)
- Boundless Spirit — Your best-in-slot scaling item; massive spirit power amplifies your entire kit
- Mystic Reverb — Ability hits echo for additional spirit damage, turning every combo into a guaranteed kill
- Ethereal Shift — Invulnerability window to dodge burst or buy time for cooldowns after an assassination
- Escalating Exposure — Stacking spirit amp on targets makes even tanks melt under sustained ability pressure

Ability Priority
- Gloom Bombs — Max this first. The cluster bomb damage is Calico's primary burst tool. Extra ranks increase damage, add more bombs, and reduce cooldown — essential for clearing waves and securing kills.
- Leaping Slash — Max second. The dash-slash combo is your gap closer, melee burst, and sustain tool in one. Higher ranks increase the healing on hero hit and reduce cooldown, letting you chain dashes in extended fights.
- Ava — Max third. The cat familiar form is mainly a mobility and roaming tool. One early point unlocks the rotation potential, but the scaling is less impactful than your damage abilities.
- Return to Shadows (Ultimate) — Level whenever available. Calico's ultimate makes her untargetable while dealing spirit damage twice — on entry and exit. Rush the tier 3 upgrade for the cooldown reset and damage amplification.
Playstyle Tips
Laning Phase
Calico has a weak early lane compared to most heroes. Focus on last-hitting safely and use Gloom Bombs to harass from range when the enemy steps forward. Don't force trades — your damage is backloaded into your combo and you'll lose extended gun duels. Once you hit level 3 with Ava unlocked, start rotating to jungle camps between waves. Calico farms jungle boxes faster than most heroes thanks to Leaping Slash's AoE and lifesteal.
Your first kill window opens once you have Gloom Bombs and Leaping Slash upgraded. Use Ava to flank from an unexpected angle, open with Gloom Bombs, then Leaping Slash through the target for the kill.
Mid Game
This is Calico's power spike. With Cold Front and Mystic Vulnerability online, your combo chain becomes lethal against any squishy target. Use Ava to scout the map and find isolated enemies. The ideal assassination sequence is: Ava to position → Gloom Bombs → Leaping Slash → gun finish → Return to Shadows to escape.
In teamfights, don't engage first. Wait for your team to initiate, then flank the backline. Your job is to delete the enemy carry before they can deal damage. If you can't find an angle, use Torment Pulse to add AoE pressure from the edge of the fight.
Late Game
Late-game Calico is a surgical assassin. With Boundless Spirit and Mystic Reverb, your full combo kills almost any hero from full health. Your role is to find picks before objectives and create number advantages. Use Ava to traverse the map faster than anyone else and set up flanks that the enemy team can't predict.
Be patient in teamfights — diving in too early against a grouped team with CC will get you killed instantly. Wait for key abilities to be used, then go in. Ethereal Shift gives you a second chance if your initial burst doesn't secure the kill.
Matchups
Favorable
- Mirage — He can't escape your burst combo, and his sustained poke doesn't help when you one-shot him from stealth
- Shiv — Your range advantage is massive; he has no way to close the gap if you engage on your terms
- Holliday — Her predictable engage pattern gets punished by your combo; she can't peel herself fast enough
Even
- Bebop — Dodge his hook and you get a free kill; get hooked and you're dead. The matchup is entirely skill-dependent
- Pocket — His briefcase can absorb your burst, but you can play around the cooldown and re-engage
- Dynamo — His healing sustains through your poke, but your burst combo can still kill him in a clean 1v1
Unfavorable
- Seven — His AoE stun disrupts your combo, and his sustained damage zones you out of fights
- Haze — She matches your burst and has better sustained gun damage; mirror assassin matchups favor her
- Ivy — Her peel and healing for teammates completely shuts down your assassination attempts
