Best Venator Build & Guide (2026) — Deadlock
Saturday, March 21, 2026 · 8 min read
Venator is Deadlock's ruthless weapon-burst executioner. He sets traps, blasts enemies into walls, and finishes them with devastating crossbow stakes. Whether you're picking him up for the first time or looking to optimize your ranked build, this guide covers everything you need to dominate with Venator in 2026.
Venator Overview
Venator operates as a weapon-scaling burst assassin who excels at isolating targets, locking them down, and executing them before they can react. Consecrating Grenade fires a bouncing grenade that explodes for weapon damage and sets enemies on fire — burning targets take pure damage over time and suffer reduced healing, Hex-Lined Snap Trap deploys an armed trap that springs on first enemy contact dealing spirit damage while immobilizing and revealing them, Gutshot fires a devastating shotgun blast that pushes enemies back and stuns them against walls for bonus weapon damage, and his ultimate Ira Domini loads a crossbow with three blessed stakes that deal massively increased weapon damage — the final stake executes low-health enemies with bonus pure damage. He rewards aggressive players who set up kills with traps and wall-stuns before going in for the execute.
Strengths
- Devastating execute potential with Ira Domini's final stake finishing off wounded targets through any remaining defenses
- Excellent pick capability through Snap Trap immobilize into Gutshot wall-stun for guaranteed burst combos
- Anti-heal built into kit — Consecrating Grenade's fire reduces healing, countering sustain-heavy heroes
- True damage mechanics bypass resistances, making Venator effective against even the tankiest compositions
Weaknesses
- Commit-heavy burst — if the combo doesn't secure the kill, Venator is vulnerable during cooldowns
- Trap is telegraphed — experienced players will spot and avoid Hex-Lined Snap Trap placements
- Gutshot requires wall proximity to get the stun — open areas significantly reduce his kill potential
- Ira Domini locks into a firing pattern that can be dodged or interrupted by mobile enemies
Recommended Item Build
Based on data from over 8,000 ranked Venator matches tracked on dodge.gg, here's the highest winrate build path.
Early Game (0–10 min)
- Headshot Booster — Amplifies Venator's weapon damage on precision shots, stacking with Gutshot and Ira Domini burst
- Melee Charge — Extra melee damage for finishing off trapped or wall-stunned targets at close range
- Sprint Boots — Positioning is critical for Gutshot wall-stuns and setting up Snap Traps at choke points
- Healing Rite — Sustain between trades so you can play aggressively in lane without backing

Mid Game (10–20 min)
- Slowing Bullets — Enemies you tag can't escape your Gutshot follow-up or run out of Snap Trap range
- Toxic Bullets — Stacks anti-heal with Consecrating Grenade's fire, shutting down sustain heroes completely
- Bullet Lifesteal — Keeps you healthy through extended skirmishes and Ira Domini trades
- Reactive Barrier — Burst protection for when enemies try to turn on you during your combo

Late Game (20+ min)
- Glass Cannon — Maximum weapon damage spike that makes Ira Domini stakes hit like a truck
- Shadow Weave — Stealth approach into Gutshot wall-stun is nearly impossible to react to
- Leech — Massive sustain on your huge weapon damage lets you heal to full off a single Ira Domini rotation
- Unstoppable — Prevents enemies from interrupting your Ira Domini channel with crowd control

Ability Priority
Ira Domini (Ult) > Gutshot > Consecrating Grenade > Hex-Lined Snap Trap
Take Ira Domini upgrades whenever available — the stake damage and execute threshold scaling are game-changing. Max Gutshot first for the increased weapon damage and wall-stun duration. Consecrating Grenade second for stronger poke and longer burn duration. Snap Trap last since the base immobilize duration is sufficient for setting up combos.
Playstyle Tips
Early Game (Laning Phase)
Use Consecrating Grenade to poke the enemy laner and apply anti-heal before trades. Place Snap Traps at predictable retreat paths so enemies walk into them when they try to disengage. Look for Gutshot opportunities near walls and pillars — the wall-stun bonus damage wins trades decisively. Farm efficiently and rush your mid-game weapon items where Venator's burst becomes truly lethal.
Mid Game (Rotations)
Venator's pick potential spikes hard once Slowing Bullets and Toxic Bullets come online. Set Snap Traps at objective choke points before fights start. The ideal combo is Snap Trap immobilize into Gutshot wall-stun into Ira Domini — very few heroes survive the full rotation. Roam aggressively and look for isolated targets near walls. Consecrating Grenade before engaging ensures the anti-heal prevents any lifesaving sustain.
Late Game (Teamfights)
With Shadow Weave, you can stealth into position for devastating flanking Gutshot wall-stuns. Your role is to assassinate a priority target with your full combo — don't waste Ira Domini on tanks. Wait for the fight to start, identify the highest-value squishy target near a wall, and commit with everything. Unstoppable ensures your crossbow channel completes, and Leech sustains you through any return fire. If there's no good wall angle, Snap Trap into Consecrating Grenade into Ira Domini still deals enough raw damage to execute most heroes.
