Best Akali Build & Guide (2026) — League of Legends

The definitive Akali build guide for 2026. Optimal items, runes, ability order, playstyle tips, and matchup advice backed by data from thousands of ranked League of Legends matches.

Akali is one of League of Legends' most explosive assassins — a rogue ninja who weaves in and out of combat with dashes, stealth, and devastating burst damage. Whether you're picking her up for the first time or looking to carry ranked games from mid or top lane, this guide covers everything you need to dominate with Akali in 2026.

Akali Overview

Akali excels as a high-mobility burst assassin who dives onto priority targets and eliminates them before they can react. Her kit revolves around energy management, precise ability sequencing, and Twilight Shroud's stealth to create windows of untargetability. She's a strong split-pusher and skirmisher who thrives in chaotic fights where she can reset with takedowns.

Strengths

  • Extreme burst damage — Her full combo deletes squishy targets in under a second, making her one of the deadliest assassins in the game
  • High mobility — Shuriken Flip and Perfect Execution provide multiple dashes for engaging, chasing, and escaping
  • Twilight Shroud — The stealth zone is one of the most powerful basic abilities in the game, letting Akali dodge targeted abilities and buy time for cooldowns
  • Flexible lane assignment — Viable in both mid and top lane, giving draft flexibility and the ability to counterpick

Weaknesses

  • Difficult execution — Akali has one of the highest skill ceilings in the game; poor combo sequencing dramatically reduces her damage output
  • Energy gated — Unlike mana champions, Akali's energy pool is small and runs out fast in extended fights without proper passive proc management
  • Weak early waveclear — Before her first item, Akali struggles to shove waves quickly, making her vulnerable to roaming mid laners
  • Vulnerable to crowd control — Once Akali commits with her dashes, hard CC shuts her down before she can finish her combo or retreat to shroud

Recommended Runes

Primary — Fleet Footwork (Precision)

  • Fleet Footwork — Provides sustain and a burst of movement speed in lane, helping Akali survive poke matchups and close gaps for trades. The healing keeps her healthy through tough early levels.
  • Presence of Mind — Restores energy on champion takedowns and provides energy regeneration during combat. Critical for Akali since energy is her biggest limiting factor in extended fights.
  • Legend: Tenacity — Reduces crowd control duration, which is essential for an assassin who has to dive into the enemy team. Less time stunned means more time dealing damage.
  • Coup de Grace — Amplifies damage against low-health targets, synergizing perfectly with Akali's role as an execute-focused assassin who finishes kills with Perfect Execution.

Secondary — Resolve

  • Second Wind — Regenerates health after taking damage from enemy champions, stacking with Fleet Footwork to give Akali strong sustain through her weak early laning phase.
  • Unflinching — Grants tenacity and slow resist that scales with missing health. When Akali dives in at low health, this gives her the best chance to escape after securing a kill.

Recommended Item Build

Based on data from over 12,000 ranked Akali matches tracked on dodge.gg, here's the highest winrate build path.

Early Game (0–10 min)

  • Doran's Shield — The safer starting option for most matchups. The health regeneration and damage reduction from minion attacks help Akali survive her weak early levels against ranged poke.
  • Hextech Alternator — First back power spike. The burst proc adds significant damage to Akali's combo and builds into her core mythic.
  • Sorcerer's Shoes — Magic penetration boots amplify Akali's combo damage against targets without early magic resist, making her level 6 all-in lethal.

Core Build (10–20 min)

  • Hextech Rocketbelt — The dash active adds another gap-closer to Akali's kit and provides flat magic penetration. The active can be used mid-combo for repositioning or to close the final distance for a kill.
  • Shadowflame — Raw ability power and magic penetration. Stacks with Rocketbelt and Sorcerer's Shoes to give Akali near-true damage against any target who hasn't built magic resist.
  • Zhonya's Hourglass — The stasis active is essential for Akali. Use it between Perfect Execution casts to buy time for your second dash, or to survive after diving into the enemy backline.

Late Game (25+ min)

  • Rabadon's Deathcap — The massive AP multiplier pushes Akali's burst to one-shot thresholds. With three items already providing penetration, Deathcap's raw AP makes her combo inescapable for any squishy.
  • Void Staff — When enemies stack magic resist, Void Staff's percent penetration keeps Akali's damage relevant. Essential against teams with multiple MR items.
  • Banshee's Veil — The spell shield prevents getting caught by CC before you can engage. Blocking a single ability can be the difference between a successful assassination and an instant death.

Ability Priority

  1. Five Point Strike (Q) — Max first. This is your primary damage and waveclear tool. Each rank increases the damage and lowers the energy cost at max rank. Q is also your main way to proc your passive for energy restoration and bonus damage.
  2. Perfect Execution (R) — Level at 6, 11, and 16. The first cast is a targeted dash that deals physical damage, and the second cast is a skillshot dash that deals magic damage scaling with the target's missing health. Each rank dramatically increases the execute damage.
  3. Shuriken Flip (E) — Max second. The shuriken marks enemies and lets you reactivate to dash to them. Higher ranks increase the damage on both the initial throw and the recast dash, making it a core burst tool.
  4. Twilight Shroud (W) — Max last. One point gives you the full stealth functionality. Ranks increase the duration slightly and restore energy, but the stealth zone's utility is mainly in the mechanic itself rather than the scaling.

Playstyle Tips

Laning Phase

Akali's early laning is defensive and farm-focused. Use Q to last hit from range when the enemy threatens trades. Your passive — Assassin's Mark — is key to winning short trades: hit Q, back away to create the ring, step back in to proc the empowered auto attack for bonus damage and energy restoration, then retreat.

Avoid extended trades before level 6. Your energy pool is too small to sustain long fights, and most laners outdamage you in all-ins without your ultimate. Farm safely, take short Q-passive trades when the opportunity arises, and look for your level 6 power spike. Once you have Perfect Execution, your kill pressure skyrockets — R1 to gap close, E for the mark, Q-passive for damage, then R2 to execute.

Mid Game

This is Akali's assassination power spike. With Hextech Rocketbelt completed, you have four dashes in your kit (Rocketbelt, E recast, R1, R2) and enough burst to delete any squishy on the map. Look for flanks in teamfights and roam aggressively to side lanes where enemies are isolated.

Your combo sequence matters enormously. The optimal all-in is: R1 onto target, E to mark them, Q for damage and passive proc, auto attack for passive, then R2 to execute. If you need the Zhonya's stasis, use it between R1 and R2 — the second cast's timer is long enough to accommodate the stasis duration.

Late Game

Akali's late game is about finding the right moment to engage. You are not a frontline fighter — you are a cleanup assassin who waits for key cooldowns to be used before diving in. Position on the flanks or behind your frontline and look for angles to reach the enemy carries.

In teamfights, wait for the enemy to commit their major CC abilities before going in. Twilight Shroud is your safety net — drop it immediately after your initial burst to become untargetable while your cooldowns come back. If you secure a kill, Presence of Mind restores energy, letting you chain into the next target. Akali's teamfight pattern is burst, shroud, burst, shroud — patience between rotations is what separates good Akali players from great ones.

Matchups

Favorable

  • Veigar — Your dashes let you escape Event Horizon every time, and Twilight Shroud makes his combo nearly impossible to land. You outpressure him at every stage of the lane.
  • Lux — Her entire kit is skillshot-based and you have multiple dashes to dodge everything. Shroud makes her unable to target you, and your all-in vastly overpowers hers.
  • Twisted Fate — He has no mobility to escape your all-in and his Gold Card requires targeting you — which Shroud prevents. Free kills from level 6 onward.

Even

  • Zed — Both are assassins with similar kill patterns. The matchup comes down to who lands their abilities first. His shadows match your mobility, making it a pure skill matchup.
  • Katarina — Both are reset assassins who thrive in chaotic fights. She matches your roaming and teamfight cleanup but lacks your defensive tools. Fights often go to whoever gets the first reset.
  • Sylas — He can steal your ultimate and use it effectively. His sustain with Kingslayer makes him hard to burst, but you outscale him in side lane and have better target access in fights.

Unfavorable

  • Galio — His magic damage shield, tanky base stats, and Taunt make him nearly impossible to assassinate. He outshoves you and outroams you with his ultimate, negating your two biggest strengths.
  • Heimerdinger — His turrets zone you off the wave and punish your melee range. Your all-in is difficult to execute when three turrets are shredding your health bar during the combo.
  • Annie — Her point-and-click stun ignores your mobility entirely. Tibbers burst matches your all-in damage, and she can zone you with stun threat whenever it's up.
