Best Azir Build & Guide (2026) — League of Legends
The definitive Azir build guide for 2026. Optimal items, runes, ability order, playstyle tips, and matchup advice backed by data from thousands of ranked League of Legends matches.
Azir is League of Legends' Emperor of Shurima — a sustained DPS mage who commands an army of sand soldiers to dominate team fights from long range. Whether you're a mid lane player who loves controlling zones with persistent threats or someone who craves the mechanical satisfaction of the Shurima Shuffle, this guide covers everything you need to dominate with Azir in 2026.
Azir Overview
Azir excels as a sustained DPS mage and zone controller who scales into one of the most powerful late-game carries in League of Legends. His passive, Shurima's Legacy, lets him summon the Sun Disc on destroyed turrets — a unique tool for pushing objectives. Arise! (W) summons sand soldiers that auto-attack enemies in their range, dealing magic damage that scales with Azir's ability power. Conquering Sands (Q) commands all active soldiers to dash to a target location, damaging and slowing enemies they pass through — this is how Azir repositions his soldiers and pokes in lane. Shifting Sands (E) dashes Azir toward one of his soldiers, granting a shield on arrival, and if he hits an enemy champion during the dash he stops and gains a soldier. Emperor's Divide (R) summons a massive wall of shield soldiers that charge forward, knocking enemies back and blocking their movement for several seconds — the ultimate engage and peel tool.
Strengths
- Incredible late-game scaling — With items and levels, Azir's sand soldiers deal devastating sustained DPS from a safe range. A fully built Azir shreds through entire teams with soldier auto-attacks, and his damage per second rivals or exceeds most ADCs while being entirely magic damage
- Long-range zone control — Sand soldiers threaten a massive area around Azir, zoning enemies away from objectives and chokepoints. Enemies who walk into soldier range take punishing damage, and Conquering Sands lets Azir reposition the threat zone on the fly
- Shurima Shuffle playmaking — E-Q into R is one of the most powerful engage combos in the game, knocking an entire enemy team back into your allies. A well-executed Shuffle wins teamfights single-handedly and is nearly impossible to react to
- Self-peel with Emperor's Divide — R creates a wall that blocks enemy movement and knocks back anyone it hits. This gives Azir survivability that most mages lack — assassins and divers who jump on him get shoved away, and the wall lingers to prevent re-engagement
Weaknesses
- Extremely high skill ceiling — Azir demands precise soldier management, spacing, and mechanical execution. Soldier placement, Q repositioning, and the Shurima Shuffle all require practice. His winrate increases dramatically with games played, meaning new Azir players will struggle
- Weak early game — Before Nashor's Tooth and level 9, Azir's damage output is low and his mana costs are punishing. Aggressive early-game champions can snowball against him before he reaches his power spikes
- Mana hungry — Summoning soldiers and repositioning them with Q drains mana quickly. Without proper mana management or items, Azir runs dry in extended laning phases and can't contest waves
- Vulnerable when soldiers are down — If Azir has no active soldiers and W is on cooldown, he has no damage. Smart enemies will engage during windows when his soldiers have expired and Arise! charges are depleted
Recommended Runes
Primary — Lethal Tempo (Precision)
- Lethal Tempo — Azir's sand soldiers benefit from attack speed, and Lethal Tempo ramps his DPS to incredible levels during extended fights. Each soldier auto-attack stacks the rune, and at full stacks Azir's soldier attacks shred through entire teams. The bonus range at max stacks extends his already impressive threat zone.
- Presence of Mind — Mana restoration on champion damage solves Azir's mana issues in trades and teamfights. Every soldier attack on an enemy champion refunds mana, letting Azir sustain through long fights without going dry. Essential for a champion who burns mana constantly.
- Legend: Alacrity — Bonus attack speed from stacks directly increases Azir's soldier DPS. More attack speed means more soldier hits per second, and Alacrity stacks passively throughout the game as Azir scales toward his late-game carry fantasy.
- Cut Down — Azir is a relatively low-health mage who frequently fights tanky frontliners. Cut Down's bonus damage against higher-health targets ensures his soldiers still chunk bruisers and tanks who try to walk through his soldier zone.
Secondary — Sorcery
- Manaflow Band — Additional mana and mana regeneration shore up Azir's early-game mana problems. Landing Q poke on enemies stacks Manaflow naturally during laning phase, and the fully stacked regeneration is a meaningful sustain boost.
- Gathering Storm — Free ability power that scales infinitely complements Azir's identity as a late-game hypercarry. At 20 and 30 minutes, the AP boost is substantial and pushes his soldier damage to terrifying levels. Azir games tend to go long, so Gathering Storm pays off consistently.
Recommended Item Build
Based on data from over 10,000 ranked Azir matches tracked on dodge.gg, here's the highest winrate build path.
Early Game (0–10 min)
- Doran's Ring — Standard mage starting item providing ability power, health, and mana regeneration. The mana sustain is critical for Azir's early laning where he needs to summon soldiers constantly for CS and trading.
- Recurve Bow — Early attack speed component that directly increases Azir's soldier DPS. Building toward Nashor's Tooth, the Recurve Bow is a noticeable power spike that makes his trades significantly stronger.
- Boots — Movement speed helps Azir maintain proper spacing from enemies and reposition for soldier attacks. Combined with Shifting Sands, boots make him much safer against ganks.
Core Build (10–20 min)
- Nashor's Tooth — The single most important item on Azir. Attack speed, ability power, and the on-hit magic damage passive all synergize perfectly with his sand soldiers. Nashor's Tooth is a massive power spike that transforms Azir from a weak laner into a legitimate DPS threat.
- Sorcerer's Shoes — Magic penetration boots ensure Azir's soldier damage cuts through base magic resistance. The flat pen is most impactful in the mid-game when enemies haven't built MR items yet, and it compounds with his sustained damage to chunk squishy targets.
- Shadowflame — Raw ability power and the critical strike passive on magic damage against low-health targets make Shadowflame an excellent second item. Azir's sustained soldier attacks naturally whittle enemies below the crit threshold, and Shadowflame's passive finishes them off.
Late Game (25+ min)
- Rabadon's Deathcap — The multiplicative AP increase pushes Azir's soldier damage to its peak. With Deathcap, each soldier auto-attack hits like a truck, and sustained DPS in teamfights becomes overwhelming. This is the item that completes Azir's hypercarry transformation.
- Void Staff — Percentage magic penetration ensures Azir's damage remains lethal against enemies stacking magic resistance. By late game, tanks and bruisers will build MR to survive his soldiers, and Void Staff guarantees his DPS still shreds through their defenses.
- Zhonya's Hourglass — Stasis is invaluable for a mage who needs to stay in auto-attack range to deal damage. Zhonya's lets Azir survive burst from assassins and divers, buying time for cooldowns and team follow-up. The armor is a welcome bonus against AD threats.
Ability Priority
- Emperor's Divide (R) — Level at 6, 11, and 16. Each rank increases the wall's damage and the duration it persists. More importantly, lower cooldown means more opportunities for Shurima Shuffles and defensive peeling in teamfights.
- Arise! (W) — Max first. W is the foundation of Azir's entire kit — soldier damage, attack speed, and the number of stored charges all scale with rank. Maxing W first maximizes Azir's sustained DPS and gives him more soldiers to work with in extended fights and wave clear.
- Conquering Sands (Q) — Max second. Each rank increases Q's damage and reduces its cooldown, letting Azir reposition soldiers more frequently. The lower cooldown is critical for maintaining pressure in fights and poking in lane, and the damage adds up since Q hits all enemies along the path.
- Shifting Sands (E) — Max last. One point is sufficient for the dash and shield utility. Additional ranks increase the shield value and reduce cooldown, but the DPS gains from W and Q ranks are far more impactful for Azir's overall damage output.
Playstyle Tips
Laning Phase
Azir's laning is about farming safely with soldiers while poking when opportunities arise. Summon a soldier with W near the caster minions, then auto-attack through the soldier to last-hit from range. When the enemy laner walks into your soldier's attack range, punish them with a few soldier autos — this is free damage they can't easily trade back.
Use Conquering Sands to poke when the enemy steps forward for CS. W-Q sends a soldier through them for a quick chunk of damage, and you can follow up with soldier autos while they're slowed. Don't spam this combo excessively early — the mana cost adds up quickly, and you need mana for wave clear and safety.
Shifting Sands is your escape. Save E for ganks rather than using it aggressively. The dash to a soldier combined with the shield gives you a reliable escape that most junglers can't follow. Only use E offensively if you're confident the enemy jungler is on the opposite side of the map and you can secure a kill.
Mid Game
Mid-game Azir is about scaling through farm while contributing to objective fights with soldier DPS and Emperor's Divide. With Nashor's Tooth completed, your damage output spikes dramatically. Push mid waves quickly with soldiers, then rotate to Dragon or Rift Herald fights where your sustained DPS shines.
In skirmishes, position behind your frontline and let soldiers do the work. Place soldiers in chokepoints around objectives — enemies who walk through the soldier zone take heavy sustained damage. Save R for either a Shurima Shuffle engage when you catch enemies grouped, or as defensive peel when divers target you.
The Shurima Shuffle is Azir's signature play: place a soldier behind the enemy with W, dash to it with E, Q mid-dash to redirect toward the enemy, then R to knock them into your team. Practice this combo in practice tool — when executed correctly, it's one of the most devastating engage tools in the game.
Late Game
Late-game Azir is a hypercarry whose sustained DPS rivals any champion in the game. With full items, sand soldier autos deal massive magic damage, and Lethal Tempo at full stacks turns you into a magic damage machine gun. Your job is to stay alive and auto-attack through soldiers — if you survive, you win the fight.
In teamfights, position carefully behind your frontline and create a soldier zone that enemies have to walk through. Q to reposition soldiers onto priority targets, and keep attacking relentlessly. Emperor's Divide should be saved for peeling — when an assassin or diver jumps on you, R them away and continue dealing damage. The wall blocks their re-engagement and buys you crucial seconds.
Only use the Shurima Shuffle offensively in late game if you're certain it wins the fight. A dead Azir deals no damage, and your sustained DPS from the backline is usually more valuable than a risky engage. If your team has other engage tools, play as a pure backline carry and let them start the fight while you melt the enemy team with soldiers.
Matchups
Favorable
- Veigar — Veigar's Event Horizon cage is dangerous, but Azir can auto-attack through soldiers from outside cage range. Azir's sustained DPS prevents Veigar from farming safely, and Shifting Sands can dash through Event Horizon if needed. Azir out-scales Veigar in teamfight DPS and can bully him throughout laning phase with soldier poke.
- Twisted Fate — TF lacks the range to contest Azir's soldiers and has no tools to deal with sustained poke. Azir shoves waves faster than TF can match, punishing his roams with tower plates. Emperor's Divide stops TF from using Gold Card effectively, and Azir's DPS overwhelms TF in direct fights at every stage of the game.
- Malzahar — Azir's soldiers outrange Malzahar's Voidlings and Space Aids, letting him farm and poke from safety. Soldier autos kill Voidlings quickly, denying Malzahar's push. Azir scales harder than Malzahar and can position far enough back that Nether Grasp is difficult to land without Flash. A QSS purchase completely neutralizes Malzahar's threat.
Even
- Orianna — Orianna matches Azir's range and zone control with her own ball positioning. Both champions want to farm safely and scale, making this a passive lane. Orianna's Shockwave is a more reliable teamfight ultimate than Emperor's Divide, but Azir's sustained DPS outscales her burst in extended fights. The matchup comes down to which player controls spacing better.
- Viktor — Viktor's laser poke is annoying and difficult to dodge, but Azir can sustain through it with Doran's Ring and trade back with soldiers. Both champions scale extremely well and have comparable teamfight impact. Viktor's burst is higher, but Azir's sustained DPS wins extended fights. Lane phase is a farm-off with occasional poke exchanges.
- Syndra — Syndra's Q poke threatens Azir in lane, and Unleashed Power can one-shot him if he's caught below 60%. However, Azir outranges Syndra with soldiers and can farm safely while poking her. Shifting Sands dodges Syndra's E stun, and Emperor's Divide denies her from walking into Unleashed Power range. The lane is volatile but skill-dependent.
Unfavorable
- Xerath — Xerath outranges even Azir's soldiers and can poke with impunity from a distance Azir can't threaten. Azir needs to be within soldier range to deal damage, but Xerath's Q and W hit from far beyond that range. Xerath's E stun stops Shurima Shuffle attempts, and his poke forces Azir to burn mana on sustain rather than trading.
- Kassadin — Kassadin's magic damage reduction passive and Null Sphere interrupt are naturally strong against Azir. Post-6, Riftwalk lets Kassadin jump on top of Azir and burst him before soldiers can deal meaningful sustained damage. Azir's early poke should dominate lane, but if Kassadin survives to his power spikes, the matchup flips entirely.
- Irelia — Irelia's all-in potential is terrifying for Azir. Bladesurge dashes through minion waves to gap-close instantly, and Flawless Duet stuns Azir before he can reposition. Irelia's sustained damage in melee range outfights Azir's soldiers, and her Defiant Dance reduces the magic damage that's Azir's only tool. Emperor's Divide can push her away, but a good Irelia dashes back in immediately.
