Best Braum Build & Guide (2026) — League of Legends
The definitive Braum build guide for 2026. Optimal items, runes, ability order, playstyle tips, and matchup advice backed by data from thousands of ranked League of Legends matches.
Braum is League of Legends' Heart of the Freljord — a melee tank support who protects his allies with an unbreakable shield and crowd control that locks down entire teams. Whether you're a support main who thrives on peeling for your carry or a frontline enthusiast who wants to absorb everything the enemy throws at your team, this guide covers everything you need to dominate with Braum in 2026.
Braum Overview
Braum operates as a defensive tank support who excels at protecting allies, initiating fights with crowd control, and absorbing damage with his signature shield. His passive, Concussive Blows, causes Braum's basic attacks and Winter's Bite to apply a stack to enemies — at four stacks, the target is stunned for a duration that scales with level, giving Braum and his allies a powerful crowd control tool that rewards coordinated focus fire. Winter's Bite (Q) launches a slow-moving projectile that deals magic damage and slows the first enemy hit while applying a Concussive Blows stack — Braum's primary ranged poke and engage tool in lane. Stand Behind Me (W) dashes Braum to an allied champion or minion, granting both Braum and the ally bonus armor and magic resist for a few seconds — the core defensive ability that lets Braum reposition instantly to protect whoever is being targeted. Unbreakable (E) raises Braum's shield in a direction, intercepting all projectiles for several seconds while reducing the damage of the first projectile that hits by a large amount and negating the rest — the ability that defines Braum's identity as the ultimate bodyguard. Glacial Fissure (R) slams the ground, creating a fissure that knocks up the first enemy hit and slows all enemies in the area while leaving a zone that slows enemies who walk through it — Braum's teamfight-defining engage or counter-engage ultimate.
Strengths
- Unmatched projectile blocking — Unbreakable completely negates projectile-based abilities, including ultimates like Ashe Arrow, Ezreal Trueshot Barrage, and Jinx Super Mega Death Rocket. No other champion can literally eat an enemy ultimate for their team, making Braum the single best counter to projectile-heavy compositions
- Flexible engage and peel — Glacial Fissure works equally well as an engage tool to start fights and as a peel tool to protect carries. Braum can jump to a frontline ally with W to engage or jump to a backline carry to peel, giving him unmatched versatility in how he uses his kit
- Strong passive crowd control — Concussive Blows stun is applied through basic attacks from any ally, meaning the entire team contributes to stunning targets. In lane, Braum and his ADC can proc the stun extremely fast, and in teamfights, any ally auto-attacking a marked target helps trigger the stun
- Innate tankiness from W — Stand Behind Me provides bonus resistances to both Braum and his ally, making Braum naturally tanky without requiring expensive items. Combined with Unbreakable's damage reduction, Braum survives far longer in fights than his gold income would suggest
Weaknesses
- Low damage output — Braum deals almost no damage compared to other supports. He cannot trade effectively in lane without his ADC following up, and in teamfights, his contribution is entirely through crowd control and damage absorption rather than dealing damage himself
- Dependent on ally positioning — Stand Behind Me requires an allied champion or minion to dash to, meaning Braum's mobility is entirely dependent on ally positioning. If caught alone in the jungle or river with no allies nearby, Braum has no escape and no way to reposition quickly
- Weak against poke compositions — Braum's Unbreakable blocks projectiles from one direction, but against teams with multiple poke sources from different angles, he can only protect against one threat at a time. Sustained poke wears Braum's team down before he can engage
- Passive requires follow-up — Concussive Blows stun needs four stacks, and Braum can only apply the first stack himself. If his ADC doesn't auto-attack the marked target to complete the stun, Braum's crowd control in lane is limited to a single Q slow
Recommended Runes
Primary — Glacial Augment (Inspiration)
- Glacial Augment — When Braum immobilizes an enemy champion with his passive stun or Glacial Fissure, Glacial Augment creates freezing rays that slow nearby enemies and reduce their damage against Braum's allies. This amplifies Braum's crowd control identity — every stun he lands creates a zone that protects his team and locks down multiple enemies. The damage reduction rays are especially powerful in teamfights where Braum's R hits multiple targets.
- Hextech Flashtraption — Allows Braum to channel a Hexflash from bushes and out of combat, giving him surprise engage angles in lane and around objectives. Braum's biggest weakness is getting into range to engage, and Hexflash from fog of war lets him close the gap for Q or R initiations that enemies don't expect.
- Biscuit Delivery — Provides health and mana sustain in lane through free biscuits. Braum's mana pool is limited and he needs to use Q frequently to apply Concussive Blows stacks in lane. Biscuits keep him healthy through poke lanes and ensure he always has enough mana for a full combo when engage opportunities arise.
- Cosmic Insight — Reduces cooldowns on summoner spells and item actives. Flash is Braum's most important engage tool, and lower Flash cooldown means more engage opportunities. The item active cooldown reduction also benefits Locket of the Iron Solari's shield and other active items Braum builds.
Secondary — Resolve
- Font of Life — When Braum impairs an enemy's movement with Q slow, R knockup, or Glacial Augment slow, Font of Life marks them so that allied champions who attack marked targets heal. Braum applies movement impairment constantly, and Font of Life turns every slow and knockup into team-wide sustain throughout fights.
- Unflinching — Grants tenacity and slow resistance that increases as Braum's health drops lower. Braum is in the middle of every fight absorbing damage, and being crowd controlled means he can't raise Unbreakable or reposition with W. Unflinching ensures Braum stays functional even when focused.
Recommended Item Build
Based on data from over 11,000 ranked Braum matches tracked on dodge.gg, here's the highest winrate build path.
Early Game (0–10 min)
- Relic Shield — The tank support starting item that generates gold through executing low-health minions. Relic Shield's execute shares gold and heals Braum's ADC, providing sustain in lane while building toward the support item quest for ward upgrades. The health it provides helps Braum survive early trades.
- Boots of Swiftness — Movement speed is critical for Braum to close the gap for engages and reposition to protect allies. Swifties also reduce the effectiveness of slows, helping Braum reach targets despite being kited. Braum's biggest challenge is getting into range, and early boots solve that problem.
- Control Ward — Vision control is essential for a support who wants to find engage angles. Knowing enemy positions lets Braum set up Hexflash engages from bushes and ensures his team doesn't get caught out. Denying enemy vision creates opportunities for Braum to land surprise Glacial Fissures.
Core Build (10–20 min)
- Locket of the Iron Solari — The definitive support tank mythic for Braum. Locket's active shield protects all nearby allies, perfectly complementing Braum's identity as a team protector. The aura resistance and active shield combined with Unbreakable's projectile blocking make Braum's team incredibly difficult to burst down in teamfights.
- Knight's Vow — Bonds Braum to an allied champion, redirecting a portion of the damage they take to Braum and healing Braum when the bonded ally deals damage. This is Braum's best item for keeping his carry alive — bind it to the ADC and Braum effectively absorbs damage for them passively on top of Unbreakable's active protection.
- Plated Steelcaps — Armor boots that reduce incoming basic attack damage. Upgrading to Steelcaps when facing AD-heavy compositions gives Braum significant durability in fights where he's absorbing auto attacks. Against AP-heavy teams, Mercury's Treads are the alternative for tenacity and magic resist.
Late Game (25+ min)
- Frozen Heart — Provides a massive armor boost and an attack speed slow aura that reduces the DPS of nearby enemies. Braum is always in the middle of fights, meaning Frozen Heart's aura hits as many enemies as possible. The mana and ability haste also help Braum use his abilities more frequently in extended fights.
- Zeke's Convergence — When Braum casts his ultimate near his bonded ally, Zeke's empowers the ally's auto attacks with bonus magic damage. Since Braum's Glacial Fissure is a teamfight opener, Zeke's consistently procs at the most impactful moment — right when the fight starts and the ADC needs maximum damage output.
- Warmog's Armor — Gives Braum massive health regeneration out of combat, letting him stay on the map after taking damage without recalling. In the late game, Braum absorbs enormous damage in fights, and Warmog's ensures he's always full health for the next objective fight without wasting time walking back to base.
Ability Priority
- Glacial Fissure (R) — Level at 6, 11, and 16. Each rank increases the damage, knockup duration on the first target, and slow strength of the zone. Glacial Fissure is Braum's teamfight-defining ability, and higher ranks make the engage or counter-engage more impactful with longer crowd control and a more punishing slow field.
- Winter's Bite (Q) — Max first. Each rank increases the damage and slow percentage. Q is Braum's primary ability in lane for poking, applying Concussive Blows stacks at range, and slowing targets for his ADC to follow up. Higher ranks make the slow stronger, which improves engage setups and chase potential significantly.
- Stand Behind Me (W) — Max second. Each rank increases the bonus armor and magic resist granted to both Braum and his ally. Maxing W second makes Braum and his carry dramatically tankier in mid-game fights, and the resistance steroids scale well with Braum's naturally tanky build.
- Unbreakable (E) — Max last. E's projectile-blocking effect doesn't improve with rank — it blocks projectiles at level 1 the same way it does at level 5. Additional ranks only increase the damage reduction of the first projectile and reduce the cooldown slightly. One point gives Braum his signature ability, and ranks in Q and W provide more value.
Playstyle Tips
Laning Phase
Braum's laning phase is about setting up Concussive Blows stuns with your ADC and using Unbreakable to win trades. Level 1, take Q for ranged poke and slow. Hit Q on the enemy ADC or support when they step up for CS, then walk forward with your ADC to stack Concussive Blows with auto attacks for the stun.
At level 2, take W if you need to protect your ADC from an aggressive lane, or E if the enemy has strong projectile poke. Unbreakable is especially valuable against lanes like Caitlyn, Ezreal, or Karma who rely on projectile abilities for poke. Stand in front of your ADC with E raised to negate their damage entirely.
At level 3, Braum has his full kit and strong all-in potential. The engage pattern is Q to slow, walk up and auto attack, then let your ADC auto the marked target to complete the stun. Use W to dash to your ADC if the enemy turns on them, or W to a melee minion to close distance for the engage. Save E to block counterfire during the trade.
Mid Game
Mid-game Braum is about protecting his carry in teamfights and using Glacial Fissure to control the fight's tempo. With Locket completed, Braum has two layers of team protection: Unbreakable for projectiles and Locket active for burst damage. Position near your ADC and be ready to W to them instantly if a diver threatens them.
In teamfights, decide whether to use R offensively or defensively based on team composition. Against dive-heavy teams, save Glacial Fissure to knock up assassins or divers who jump on your carry — the knockup and slow zone create space for the ADC to kite. Against squishy teams, use R aggressively to initiate from fog of war or over walls to catch enemies off guard.
Use Unbreakable proactively — don't wait until your carry is being hit. Raise the shield in the direction of the biggest threat before the damage arrives. A well-timed E that blocks a Jinx rocket or Ashe arrow can single-handedly win a teamfight.
Late Game
Late-game Braum is a teamfight cornerstone whose layered protection makes his carry nearly unkillable in organized fights. With full items, Braum provides Locket shields, Knight's Vow damage redirection, Frozen Heart attack speed reduction, Unbreakable projectile blocking, and Glacial Fissure zone control all at once. No other support offers this many simultaneous layers of team protection.
Position as the frontline shield for your carry. Stand between the enemy team and your ADC, absorb skillshots with E, and be ready to W back to your carry if someone gets past you. Use Locket active the moment burst damage threatens your team — timing it before the damage lands rather than reactively after someone is already low.
In late-game objective fights around Baron and Elder Dragon, Braum's Glacial Fissure is a fight-defining ability. A well-placed R in the narrow corridors around objectives can knock up and slow the entire enemy team, giving your team several seconds to deal free damage. Follow up with Q and auto attacks to proc Concussive Blows stuns on priority targets while your carries clean up.
Matchups
Favorable
- Jinx — Braum's Unbreakable blocks Jinx's Zap and Super Mega Death Rocket, removing two of her most impactful abilities from fights. Braum can dash to allies being targeted by Jinx's ultimate and block it entirely. In lane, Jinx has no escape from Braum's engage, and Concussive Blows stun with ADC follow-up locks Jinx down for easy kills.
- Ezreal — Braum's E blocks every Ezreal Q, W, and R, which are all projectiles. Ezreal's entire damage pattern is negated by Unbreakable, and in lane, blocking Mystic Shot spam prevents Ezreal from poking or stacking his passive. Braum turns Ezreal's laning phase into a non-factor.
- Sona — Braum punishes Sona's squishiness and lack of mobility. One Q slow into Concussive Blows stun means Sona dies in lane — she has no escape and no way to prevent Braum from engaging on her. Braum's all-in pressure forces Sona to play so far back that she can't poke effectively.
Even
- Thresh — Thresh and Braum are both playmakers with similar engage and peel patterns. Braum can block Thresh's hook with Unbreakable, but Thresh's Flay disrupts Braum's engages. Both champions provide strong peel and crowd control, and the lane comes down to which support creates better opportunities for their ADC.
- Nautilus — Braum can block Nautilus's hook with E, but Nautilus's point-and-click R bypasses Unbreakable. Both champions have strong all-in potential and tanky kits. The lane favors whoever hits level 2 first and lands the engage, making it a volatile even matchup that snowballs off early trades.
- Leona — Leona's engage power matches Braum's defensive power. Braum can shield his ADC from Leona's E-Q combo, but Leona's all-in is so aggressive that Braum's passive play can get overwhelmed. If Braum blocks Leona's engage successfully, the trade favors Braum's side. If Leona gets onto the ADC around the shield, she wins.
Unfavorable
- Morgana — Black Shield completely blocks Braum's Concussive Blows stun, Glacial Fissure knockup, and Q slow. With one ability, Morgana removes all of Braum's crowd control from a fight. Braum's entire value is in his CC, and Morgana's spell shield makes him useless against the shielded target.
- Zyra — Zyra's plant-based poke outranges Braum and chips him down before he can engage. Braum's Unbreakable doesn't block plant auto attacks since they aren't projectiles in the traditional sense, and Zyra's zone control with seeds and plants makes it hard for Braum to walk up for engages without taking heavy damage.
- Karma — Karma's Mantra-Q poke and shield kiting make it impossible for Braum to engage in lane. Karma speeds up her ADC to avoid Braum's Q, shields incoming damage, and pokes from range where Braum can't retaliate. Braum is forced to play passively and hope for teamfight opportunities, conceding lane pressure entirely.
