Best Hwei Build & Guide (2026) — League of Legends
The definitive Hwei build guide for 2026. Optimal items, runes, ability order, playstyle tips, and matchup advice backed by data from thousands of ranked League of Legends matches.
Hwei is League of Legends' visionary artist mage — a long-range spell painter who wields ten unique abilities across three subjects (Disaster, Serenity, and Torment) that he combines with his passive Signature of the Visionary and his ultimate Spiraling Despair to deliver devastating poke, zone control, utility, and crowd control from enormous range. Whether you're a mid lane main looking for a champion with unmatched ability versatility who can adapt his spell rotation to any situation or a support player who wants to control teamfights with long-range CC and utility, this guide covers everything you need to dominate with Hwei in 2026.
Hwei Overview
Hwei operates as a long-range artillery mage who builds ability power, mana, and ability haste to bombard enemies with an arsenal of spells drawn from three subjects — Subject: Disaster (Q) for damage, Subject: Serenity (W) for utility, and Subject: Torment (E) for crowd control. His passive, Signature of the Visionary, causes abilities that damage enemy champions to apply a mark that explodes after a short delay dealing bonus magic damage, adding extra burst to every spell he lands. Unlike other mages who cycle through a fixed combo rotation, Hwei selects a subject with Q, W, or E and then presses a second key to choose one of three spells within that subject, giving him access to ten distinct abilities that cover damage, waveclear, poke, area denial, shields, movement speed, vision, slows, fears, and roots. This vast toolkit makes Hwei the most versatile mage in the game because he always has the right spell for the situation. Subject: Disaster (Q) is Hwei's damage subject containing three offensive spells. QQ (Devastating Fire) launches a blazing bolt in a line that explodes on the first enemy hit, dealing magic damage in an area — this is Hwei's primary poke tool and waveclear ability, with long range and reliable damage that chunks enemies from safety. QW (Severing Bolt) calls down a massive bolt at a target area that deals magic damage after a delay, with bonus damage against targets below a health threshold — this is Hwei's execute ability for finishing low-health enemies and zoning objectives. QE (Molten Fissure) creates a line of lava on the ground that deals magic damage over time to enemies standing in it and applies a slow — this is Hwei's area denial tool for controlling choke points, blocking paths, and adding sustained damage to zones. Subject: Serenity (W) is Hwei's utility subject containing three supportive spells. WQ (Fleeting Current) creates a stream of water that grants movement speed to Hwei and allies who walk over it — this is Hwei's roaming and engage/disengage tool that gives his entire team mobility. WW (Pool of Reflection) creates a zone at a target location that grants a shield to Hwei and allies inside after a brief charge-up — this is Hwei's defensive tool for protecting his team during fights and sieges. WE (Stirring Lights) sends out orbiting lights around Hwei that deal magic damage to nearby enemies and grant mana restoration on champion hit — this is Hwei's close-range damage and mana sustain tool for aggressive trades. Subject: Torment (E) is Hwei's crowd control subject containing three disabling spells. EQ (Grim Visage) sends out a terrifying visage that fears the first enemy champion hit, causing them to flee away from the missile's travel direction — this is Hwei's single-target hard CC for catching picks and peeling divers. EW (Gaze of the Abyss) places an eye at a target location that stares at the nearest visible enemy champion and roots them after a brief channel — this is Hwei's delayed root for zone control and follow-up CC in teamfights. EE (Crushing Maw) creates a set of jaws at a target area that snap shut after a delay, dealing magic damage and pulling enemies toward the center — this is Hwei's area disruption tool for grouping enemies together for AoE combos. Spiraling Despair (R) is Hwei's ultimate — he launches a vortex of paint at a target area that attaches to enemy champions hit, dealing magic damage over time and applying an increasing slow that builds to a root after the full duration. The ultimate is a massive teamfight tool that zones enemies, slows their movement to a crawl, and eventually locks them in place for Hwei and his team to follow up with damage. The increasing slow means enemies must immediately Flash or use a dash to escape, or they are guaranteed to be rooted when the effect completes.
Strengths
- Ten unique abilities across three subjects give Hwei unmatched versatility, allowing him to always have the perfect spell for any situation — damage poke with QQ, execute burst with QW, area denial with QE, team mobility with WQ, team shields with WW, single-target fear with EQ, delayed root with EW, or area displacement with EE — No other champion in League of Legends has access to this many distinct abilities. Where other mages are locked into a single combo pattern, Hwei adapts his spell selection to the exact situation. Against a diving assassin, he uses EQ fear to peel. Against a grouped team, he uses EE to pull them together for QQ or QE follow-up. Against a siege, he shields with WW and speeds allies with WQ. This adaptability means Hwei is never in a situation where he has nothing useful to cast
- Long-range poke with QQ Devastating Fire and QW Severing Bolt lets Hwei chunk enemies from safety before fights begin, whittling health bars until engaging becomes suicidal for the enemy team — QQ has excellent range and reliable AoE damage that is difficult to dodge in the minion wave, while QW's delayed bolt deals massive damage to low-health targets from even further range. The combination of repeated QQ poke followed by QW execute creates a kill pattern where enemies are slowly worn down and then finished off from a screen away. Hwei's poke range exceeds most mid lane mages, and his Signature of the Visionary passive adds bonus burst to every landed ability
- Spiraling Despair ultimate is one of the strongest teamfight abilities in the game because the escalating slow into guaranteed root forces enemies to either burn mobility immediately or accept being locked in place for Hwei's team to collapse on — The ultimate attaches to champions and follows them, meaning it cannot be walked out of like a ground zone. Enemies must use Flash, a dash, or a cleanse effect to escape, and if those are on cooldown the root is guaranteed. Hitting multiple enemies with Spiraling Despair in a teamfight creates a situation where the entire enemy team is slowed to a crawl and then rooted simultaneously, setting up devastating follow-up from Hwei's team
- Subject: Serenity provides team utility that most damage mages lack entirely, with WQ movement speed zones for engage and disengage and WW shield zones for protecting allies during fights — Hwei is not just a damage bot — his W subject provides genuine support utility that makes his team stronger. WQ Fleeting Current lets his team chase down retreating enemies or escape from unfavorable fights with bonus movement speed. WW Pool of Reflection provides shields that absorb incoming damage during critical moments. This utility means Hwei contributes to his team even when he is not dealing damage, making him valuable in every game state
Weaknesses
- Hwei has no mobility abilities and no dash, making him extremely vulnerable to assassins and divers who can gap close past his long-range spells and force close-range fights where his casting time disadvantages him — Every spell in Hwei's kit requires aim and has a cast time, making him slow to react when an enemy is already on top of him. Champions like Zed, Fizz, and Katarina can close distance instantly and kill Hwei before he cycles through his subjects to find the right defensive spell. EQ fear is his only reliable self-peel, but it can be dodged or blocked, leaving Hwei defenseless
- The two-key-press system for casting abilities means Hwei is slower to act in emergencies than champions with single-key abilities, and selecting the wrong subject under pressure wastes critical time — Every Hwei spell requires pressing two keys — the subject (Q, W, or E) and then the specific spell within that subject. Under the pressure of an assassin dive or a chaotic teamfight, selecting the wrong subject first means Hwei must wait for the subject cooldown or press a different subject key, losing precious fractions of a second. Other mages press one key and their ability fires immediately, while Hwei must always make two inputs
- Hwei's spells have visible travel times, delay indicators, and wind-up animations that give enemies time to dodge, making his damage less reliable than point-and-click mages against mobile opponents — QQ has a projectile travel time, QW has a ground indicator before landing, QE has a visible lava zone, EW has a visible eye that telegraphs the root, and EE has a delayed snap. High-mobility champions with dashes can dodge every Hwei spell on reaction, reducing his damage output significantly. Against a team full of dashes and blinks, Hwei's abilities become much harder to land consistently
- Hwei's mana costs are high across all three subjects, and cycling through multiple spells in a fight drains his mana pool rapidly, forcing early recall timings or risky low-mana fights if mana management is poor — Each spell costs significant mana, and Hwei wants to cast frequently to utilize his full kit. Without careful mana management and early Lost Chapter, Hwei can empty his mana pool in two or three full rotations, leaving him unable to cast and completely useless in a fight. The WE mana restoration helps, but it requires close range that is dangerous for an immobile mage
Recommended Runes
Primary — Arcane Comet (Sorcery)
- Arcane Comet — Launches a comet at enemies hit by abilities, dealing adaptive damage. Arcane Comet is Hwei's optimal keystone because his extensive ability toolkit means he is constantly landing spells on enemies, each triggering a comet. QQ Devastating Fire poke triggers Arcane Comet from long range for bonus damage, and the QE Molten Fissure slow and EE Crushing Maw pull make the comet nearly impossible to dodge because the crowd control holds enemies in place during the comet's travel time. Hwei's frequent casting means the comet cooldown is reduced rapidly through ability hits, letting him proc it multiple times in extended fights.
- Manaflow Band — Grants permanent maximum mana each time an ability hits an enemy champion, up to a cap, then provides mana regeneration. Manaflow Band addresses Hwei's significant mana consumption because he casts spells constantly from all three subjects. The permanent mana increase grows his pool throughout laning phase, and the mana regeneration once fully stacked keeps him healthy during extended poke patterns. QQ's long range makes stacking Manaflow Band safe and reliable because Hwei can proc it without risking his positioning.
- Transcendence — Grants ability haste at levels 5 and 8, and at level 11 resets a portion of basic ability cooldowns on champion takedowns. Transcendence is exceptionally valuable on Hwei because ability haste reduces the cooldown of all three subjects simultaneously, letting him cycle through Q, W, and E spells faster. The level 11 takedown reset is powerful on Hwei because champion kills or assists partially reset his subject cooldowns, letting him cast additional spells through long teamfights where other mages are waiting on cooldowns. More ability haste means more spells cast, which means more versatility and more damage.
- Gathering Storm — Grants increasing ability power at regular time intervals throughout the game. Gathering Storm gives Hwei scaling AP that amplifies all ten of his abilities as the game progresses. Unlike Scorch, which adds flat damage to a single poke hit, Gathering Storm's AP increases the damage of every spell in Hwei's kit by the mid and late game when teamfights decide the outcome. Hwei's long-range playstyle naturally extends games, making Gathering Storm's scaling consistently relevant.
Secondary — Inspiration
- Biscuit Delivery — Provides free biscuits at regular intervals that restore health and mana and permanently increase maximum mana. Biscuit Delivery sustains Hwei through his mana-intensive laning phase where he needs to poke with QQ regularly and use QE for waveclear. The health restoration helps survive trades and ganks, while the mana restoration lets him maintain his spell rotation without early recalls. The permanent mana increase stacks with Manaflow Band to expand his pool significantly.
- Cosmic Insight — Grants bonus summoner spell haste and item haste. Cosmic Insight reduces the cooldown on Flash, which is Hwei's only escape from assassin dives and ganks. The item haste reduces the cooldown on Zhonya's Hourglass active, giving Hwei his defensive stasis more frequently. For a champion with no mobility who relies on Flash and Zhonya's to survive, having both available more often is consistently valuable.
Recommended Item Build
Based on data from over 5,800 ranked Hwei matches tracked on dodge.gg, here's the highest winrate build path.
Early Game (0–10 min)
- Lost Chapter — Grants ability power, mana, and ability haste, with a passive that restores mana on level up. Lost Chapter is Hwei's essential first purchase because it addresses his high mana consumption while providing the ability power that scales all ten abilities. The mana restoration on level up sustains his poke pattern through the critical laning phase where QQ and QE need to be cast frequently. Lost Chapter builds into Blackfire Torch, making it the most efficient early purchase for Hwei's core build path. The ability haste reduces subject cooldowns, letting him cycle through his spell kit faster.
- Sorcerer's Shoes — Grants magic penetration and movement speed. Sorcerer's Shoes increase the damage of every spell across all three subjects by penetrating flat magic resistance, making QQ poke, QW execute, QE burn, and Spiraling Despair tick damage all hit harder. The magic penetration is most effective in the early-to-mid game when enemies have low magic resistance, making it a significant damage multiplier across Hwei's entire spell rotation. The movement speed helps Hwei reposition for skill shots and partially compensates for his lack of mobility.
- Amplifying Tome — Grants ability power. Amplifying Tome is a cost-efficient AP purchase that boosts all of Hwei's ability scaling. It builds into multiple core items including Blackfire Torch components and Shadowflame, making it a flexible purchase that advances Hwei's build regardless of item completion order. The extra AP makes QQ poke and QE waveclear noticeably stronger at a low gold investment.
Core Build (10–20 min)
- Blackfire Torch — Grants ability power, mana, ability haste, and a passive that deals bonus magic damage over time when abilities damage enemy champions and increases ability power per unique champion damaged. Blackfire Torch is Hwei's ideal mythic because the burn damage triggers on every one of his ten abilities, and his constant casting means the DoT is reapplied before it expires. The unique-champion-damaged AP stacking rewards Hwei's playstyle of hitting multiple enemies with AoE spells like QQ, QE, and Spiraling Despair — in a teamfight where Hwei hits all five enemies, the AP bonus stacks rapidly. The mana and ability haste keep his spell rotation flowing.
- Shadowflame — Grants ability power and magic penetration. Shadowflame provides a large chunk of ability power alongside flat magic penetration that amplifies all of Hwei's damage output. The flat penetration stacks with Sorcerer's Shoes to make Hwei's spells deal near-true damage to squishy targets who have not built magic resistance. For a champion who casts as many spells as Hwei, raw AP and penetration provide the most consistent damage increase. Shadowflame's stat profile makes every QQ poke and QW execute hit significantly harder.
- Zhonya's Hourglass — Grants ability power, armor, and ability haste, with a Stasis active that makes Hwei invulnerable and untargetable for a short duration. Zhonya's Hourglass is Hwei's most important defensive item because Stasis directly answers his vulnerability to assassins and divers. When Zed, Talon, or Fizz commit to killing Hwei, he activates Zhonya's and becomes invulnerable while his team collapses on the attacker. The armor provides additional survivability against AD threats, and the ability haste further reduces his cooldowns. Zhonya's also synergizes with Spiraling Despair — Hwei can cast R on diving enemies, then Zhonya's while the slow escalates into a root, emerging from stasis with the enemy locked in place.
Late Game (25+ min)
- Rabadon's Deathcap — Grants massive ability power and a passive that increases total ability power by a percentage. Rabadon's Deathcap is Hwei's largest damage spike because the percentage AP increase amplifies all of his other AP sources multiplicatively. With Blackfire Torch, Shadowflame, and Rabadon's, Hwei's AP reaches levels where QQ poke chunks health bars by a third and QW execute can one-shot squishy targets below the bonus damage threshold. The sheer AP amplification makes every one of Hwei's ten abilities hit dramatically harder.
- Void Staff — Grants ability power and percentage magic penetration. Void Staff becomes essential when enemies stack magic resistance items to survive Hwei's constant spell damage. The percentage penetration ensures that QQ poke, QE burn, and Spiraling Despair ticks remain threatening against tanks with Spirit Visage or Force of Nature. Without Void Staff, magic resistance stacking reduces Hwei's damage to negligible levels. With it, even the tankiest enemies take meaningful damage from his sustained spell output.
- Banshee's Veil — Grants ability power, magic resistance, and ability haste, with a passive spell shield that blocks the first enemy ability. Banshee's Veil provides crucial survivability in the late game where a single caught-out death means losing the next objective fight. The spell shield blocks engage abilities like Ashe arrow, Morgana binding, or Malphite ultimate that would otherwise guarantee Hwei's death. The magic resistance adds durability against AP burst threats, and the AP and ability haste increase his damage and cooldown cycling. Against AP-heavy compositions, Banshee's Veil lets Hwei position more confidently.
Ability Priority
- Spiraling Despair (R) — Level at 6, 11, and 16. Each rank increases the damage per tick, the slow intensity, and the root duration at the end. At rank 3, Spiraling Despair's slow escalation is so severe that enemies without dashes are guaranteed to be rooted, and the damage over the full duration is comparable to many champions' entire combos. The reduced cooldown at higher ranks means the ultimate is available for more teamfights and objective contests.
- Subject: Disaster (Q) — Max first. Each rank increases the damage of all three Q spells — QQ Devastating Fire poke, QW Severing Bolt execute, and QE Molten Fissure burn. QQ is Hwei's most frequently cast spell and maxing Q first makes his primary poke and waveclear progressively stronger. The QW execute threshold and damage also scale with rank, making it a more reliable finishing tool. Maxing Q first establishes Hwei's identity as a long-range poke mage with lethal follow-up damage.
- Subject: Torment (E) — Max second. Each rank increases the damage and crowd control effectiveness of EQ fear, EW root, and EE pull. The EQ fear duration and EW root duration both benefit from ranks, making Hwei's crowd control progressively more impactful as teamfights become more frequent in the mid game. Stronger CC means enemies are locked down longer inside Hwei's damage zones and his team's follow-up.
- Subject: Serenity (W) — Max last. A single point in W provides the movement speed from WQ, the shield from WW, and the damage from WE. The utility from W is primarily the effect itself rather than the scaling — movement speed and shield values increase modestly per rank, and the mana sustain from WE is most valuable in early laning where base values suffice. W max last is standard because Q damage and E crowd control provide more value per rank point.
Playstyle Tips
Early Game / Laning Phase
Hwei's early game focuses on establishing poke dominance with QQ Devastating Fire from long range while managing mana carefully to maintain lane presence, then using QE Molten Fissure for waveclear and EQ Grim Visage fear to set up ganks or punish overaggression. Hwei's level 1 is strong because QQ has excellent range and AoE damage that lets him poke the enemy laner while simultaneously hitting the minion wave for push advantage. By level 3, Hwei has access to at least one spell from each subject, giving him the versatility to damage, defend, and crowd control as needed.
The optimal laning pattern is to poke with QQ whenever the enemy laner steps forward to farm, use QE Molten Fissure to push waves when you want to back or roam, and hold EQ Grim Visage fear as a deterrent against all-ins or to set up your jungler's ganks. QQ poke triggers Arcane Comet and Signature of the Visionary passive for bonus damage, and repeated QQ hits whittle enemy health bars until they are forced to recall or risk death from a QW Severing Bolt execute. Manage mana carefully — do not cast from all three subjects constantly or you will run dry before your first back.
Hwei's first kill opportunity typically comes at level 6 when Spiraling Despair becomes available. If the enemy is at 50 percent health from QQ poke, Hwei can cast R onto them for the escalating slow, follow with EQ fear to lock them in place while the slow intensifies, then QQ and QW for burst damage. The combination of Spiraling Despair slow into root plus fear plus burst spells is enough to kill most mid laners from half health.
Ward the river and track the enemy jungler because Hwei's lack of mobility makes him a prime gank target. If ganked, use EQ fear on the closer threat, WQ Fleeting Current for movement speed toward your tower, and Flash only if CC or gap closers make escape otherwise impossible. Never overcommit to aggressive spell rotations without vision of the enemy jungler — Hwei without Flash and without EQ fear available is an easy kill.
Mid Game
Mid-game Hwei with Blackfire Torch becomes a teamfight orchestrator whose combination of long-range QQ poke, QE area denial, EQ fear picks, and Spiraling Despair root zones allows him to control the tempo of every fight by dealing damage, locking down priority targets, and providing team utility with WQ speed zones and WW shields. The mid game is where Hwei's versatility becomes his greatest asset because teamfights require different spells at different moments.
Before teamfights, Hwei should poke with QQ from maximum range to chunk enemy health bars. Each QQ that connects triggers Blackfire Torch burn and Signature of the Visionary for bonus damage that adds up across multiple poke casts. If enemies are grouped, QE Molten Fissure on a choke point forces them to either walk through the lava and take sustained damage or split around it and break their formation. QW Severing Bolt punishes enemies who linger in one spot, especially around objectives where they are stationary.
In teamfights, Hwei's spell priority depends on what his team needs. If his team is engaging, Hwei opens with R Spiraling Despair on the enemy backline to slow and eventually root the carries, then EE Crushing Maw to pull enemies together for AoE, followed by QQ and QE for damage. If his team is being dove, Hwei uses EQ fear on the primary diver, WW Pool of Reflection to shield threatened allies, and WQ Fleeting Current to give his team mobility to kite. This situational spell selection is what separates good Hwei players from great ones.
At Dragon and Baron, Hwei's long-range spells let him contest objectives from safety. QW Severing Bolt's bonus damage against low-health targets helps secure smite fights by adding burst to the objective when it is in execute range. Place QE Molten Fissure across the pit entrance to zone enemies from contesting, and hold Spiraling Despair for the moment the enemy team commits to the fight.
Late Game
Late-game Hwei with a full build is a teamfight artillery mage whose Rabadon's-amplified QQ poke chunks carries for half their health bar, whose Spiraling Despair root zones lock entire teams in place, and whose ten-ability toolkit provides an answer to every situation the enemy creates. The late game is where Hwei's damage reaches devastating levels because Rabadon's percentage AP increase and Void Staff penetration make every spell a serious threat.
In late-game teamfights, Hwei should never be in the front line. Position behind your team at maximum range and cycle through spells based on the fight's progression. Open with QQ poke before the fight begins, cast Spiraling Despair when enemies commit to the engage, use EQ fear or EW root to peel for your carry or lock down the enemy carry, shield your frontline with WW, and use QW Severing Bolt to execute enemies who drop to low health. The sheer volume of utility Hwei brings to a late-game fight is unmatched — damage, crowd control, shields, movement speed, and area denial all from a single champion.
At Elder Dragon and Baron, Hwei's ability to zone, poke, and lock down enemies makes him one of the strongest objective-control mages in the game. QE Molten Fissure across the pit entrance prevents enemies from walking in without taking sustained damage. Spiraling Despair on the enemy team when they try to contest guarantees a root if they do not have dashes available. QW Severing Bolt adds burst damage to the objective for faster secure.
Banshee's Veil spell shield is essential for surviving late-game fights because Hwei's long range means he should rarely be in danger, but a single caught-out engage spell means instant death. Keep the spell shield up, position at maximum range, and do not walk forward without vision. Hwei's damage is enormous in the late game but he is fragile — staying alive to cast multiple spell rotations is worth more than risking death for one extra QQ poke.
Matchups
Favorable
- Veigar — Veigar is a scaling mage who relies on Event Horizon cage to lock enemies down for his burst combo. Hwei outranges Veigar entirely — QQ poke hits from distances where Veigar's Dark Matter and Baleful Strike cannot reach, and Hwei never needs to walk close enough for Event Horizon to be a threat. Veigar's immobile frame makes him an easy target for QQ poke, EW root, and Spiraling Despair, all of which Veigar cannot dodge without Flash. Hwei's early poke pressure prevents Veigar from safely stacking AP with Baleful Strike, delaying his scaling power spike.
- Twisted Fate — Twisted Fate has short range on his Wild Cards poke and must walk into medium range to use Pick A Card, putting him well within Hwei's QQ range for free poke. Twisted Fate's lack of mobility beyond his Destiny ultimate makes him easy to hit with skill shots, and Hwei's EQ fear interrupts Destiny channel if timed correctly. When Twisted Fate roams with his ultimate, Hwei pushes the wave into his tower with QQ and QE and takes plates, punishing every roam with gold and tower damage.
- Malzahar — Malzahar's Voidling minions and Malefic Visions provide push pressure, but Hwei's QQ and QE waveclear match or exceed Malzahar's push. Malzahar's Nether Grasp ultimate requires him to walk into medium range, which is well within Hwei's kill range with Spiraling Despair into full combo. Hwei can poke Malzahar from outside Malefic Visions bounce range, and QE Molten Fissure kills Voidlings efficiently. Malzahar's passive spell shield is broken by a single QQ poke, leaving him exposed.
Even
- Syndra — Syndra is a burst mage with strong laning poke from Dark Sphere and devastating Unleashed Power burst. The matchup is even because both champions excel at long-range poke and neither can easily kill the other without landing CC first. Syndra's Scatter the Weak stun is a threat to Hwei's immobile positioning, but Hwei's EQ fear provides equivalent catch potential. Both champions want to poke from range and look for a CC-into-burst opportunity, and the lane often stalls into a skill matchup determined by who lands crowd control first.
- Orianna — Orianna is a utility mage whose Command: Attack ball poke and Command: Shockwave ultimate provide zone control similar to Hwei's kit. The matchup is even because Orianna's ball zone and Hwei's spell rotation provide comparable lane pressure, and neither champion has the burst to kill the other without extended setup. Orianna's Command: Protect shield absorbs Hwei's QQ poke damage, while Hwei's WW shield absorbs Orianna's ball damage. Both champions scale well and contribute heavily to teamfights, making this a farm-and-scale lane.
- Lux — Lux is a long-range mage whose Light Binding root and Final Spark ultimate threaten from enormous range. The matchup is even because both champions poke from safety and neither wants to walk close enough for the other to land CC reliably. Lux's Light Binding root is dangerous for Hwei's immobile frame, but Hwei's EQ fear and EW root threaten Lux equally. Both champions clear waves effectively from range and the lane tends toward a poke standoff where jungle pressure determines who gets ahead.
Unfavorable
- Fizz — Fizz is a mobile assassin whose Urchin Strike dash and Playful/Trickster invulnerability let him dodge every Hwei skill shot and close distance instantly. When Fizz commits with Chum the Waters ultimate, Hwei has no reliable way to escape — EQ fear can miss, and Fizz's Playful/Trickster makes him untargetable during the approach. Fizz's burst combo kills Hwei from full health once he has Hextech Rocketbelt, and Hwei's long cast times mean he cannot react fast enough to Fizz's all-in. The matchup requires Hwei to play extremely far back and accept losing farm, which delays his item spikes.
- Zed — Zed's Living Shadow and Death Mark dashes let him bypass Hwei's long-range poke and force a close-range fight where Hwei's casting time is a fatal disadvantage. When Zed presses R, Hwei has a fraction of a second to react with EQ fear or Zhonya's, and missing means death. Zed's shadow poke from range also threatens Hwei because his immobile frame cannot dodge empowered shurikens consistently. Hwei must build Zhonya's Hourglass early in this matchup, delaying his damage spikes significantly.
- LeBlanc — LeBlanc's Distortion dash provides instant gap close with built-in return to safety, making her impossible for Hwei to punish. LeBlanc dashes in, lands Sigil of Malice and Ethereal Chains, dashes back before Hwei can even select a subject and cast a defensive spell. The two-key-press system makes Hwei too slow to react to LeBlanc's burst pattern, and her Distortion return makes EQ fear and EW root nearly impossible to land. LeBlanc's roaming with Distortion also punishes Hwei's slow wave manipulation because she can shove and leave before Hwei pushes back.
