Best Olaf Build & Guide (2026) — League of Legends
The definitive Olaf build guide for 2026. Optimal items, runes, ability order, playstyle tips, and matchup advice backed by data from thousands of ranked League of Legends matches.
Olaf is League of Legends' Berserker — a bruiser-fighter who hurls Undertow axes to slow and shred armor, activates Tough It Out for a massive attack speed steroid and shield when his health drops low, cleaves enemies with Reckless Swing's unavoidable true damage, and becomes completely immune to all crowd control with Ragnarok while gaining bonus attack damage and movement speed to run down any target. Olaf excels in the top lane with a 53.25% win rate on Patch 16.6 in Emerald+ on u.gg (S tier, rank 7/63) and a 53.32% win rate on LoLalytics (S tier, rank 6/103 top laners), thriving as an aggressive bruiser who dominates lane through relentless trading with Undertow's spammable poke, sustains through fights with Berserker Rage's escalating life steal, and becomes an unstoppable force in teamfights with Ragnarok's CC immunity. Whether you are a top lane main looking for a champion who punishes passive laners with overwhelming early aggression, a bruiser player who wants a fighter that becomes more dangerous the lower his health drops, or a climbing player who wants a straightforward champion that wins games through raw combat power and relentless pressure, this guide covers everything you need to dominate with Olaf in 2026.
Olaf Overview
Olaf operates as a bruiser-fighter whose power comes from his unique low-health scaling through Berserker Rage's attack speed and life steal, his spammable Undertow axes that slow and shred armor, his Reckless Swing true damage that ignores all defenses, and his Ragnarok ultimate that makes him completely immune to crowd control. He is currently played primarily in the top lane (53.25% win rate, S tier on u.gg Emerald+). On LoLalytics, Olaf top sits at a 53.32% win rate with a 2.58% pick rate, ranked 6/103 top laners with an S tier grade. His pick rate is moderate at around 2.6% with a 2.3% ban rate, reflecting his role as a strong bruiser who rewards aggressive play and punishes opponents who cannot kite or disengage.
Unlike most bruisers who build defensively when behind, Olaf's identity revolves around being a berserker who gets stronger as he takes damage — Berserker Rage grants escalating attack speed and life steal as his health drops, Tough It Out's shield scales with missing health, and Ragnarok's CC immunity lets him charge into the enemy team without fear of being locked down. This makes Olaf a terrifying all-in champion who forces enemies to either burst him from 100 to 0 or watch him life steal his way back to full health through sheer attack speed.
Berserker Rage (Passive) grants Olaf bonus attack speed and life steal based on his missing health, scaling up to 50% – 107.84% (based on level) bonus attack speed and 8% – 27.67% (based on level) life steal at 70% missing health. Berserker Rage is the defining passive in Olaf's kit because it fundamentally changes how he fights — most champions become weaker as they lose health, but Olaf becomes exponentially more dangerous. At low health, Olaf's attack speed nearly doubles while his life steal lets him heal back massive amounts with every auto attack, creating a terrifying feedback loop where the more damage Olaf takes, the faster he attacks and the more he heals. This passive is why Olaf often wins fights that look unwinnable — enemies commit to killing him at 30% health only to watch him life steal back to 60% in seconds.
Undertow (Q) causes Olaf to throw an axe to a target location, dealing 70 / 120 / 170 / 220 / 270 (+100% bonus AD) physical damage to enemies it passes through, slowing them by 30 / 35 / 40 / 45 / 50% for 1–3 seconds based on distance traveled, and reducing their armor by 20% for 4 seconds. Against monsters, Undertow deals an additional 20 / 35 / 50 / 65 / 80 bonus damage. If Olaf picks up the axe, Undertow's cooldown is reduced by 4.5 seconds. Undertow has a cooldown of 9 seconds and costs 50 / 55 / 60 / 65 / 70 mana. Undertow is Olaf's primary trading and chasing tool because picking up the axe reduces the cooldown to just 4.5 seconds, allowing Olaf to throw axes almost continuously while chasing. The 20% armor reduction stacks with other armor shred effects, meaning Olaf and his team deal significantly more physical damage to anyone hit by Undertow. In lane, Undertow provides ranged poke and wave clear that most melee top laners cannot match, and the slow makes it nearly impossible for enemies to disengage from Olaf once he starts running them down.
Tough It Out (W) grants Olaf 40 / 50 / 60 / 70 / 80% bonus attack speed for 5 seconds and a shield of 10 / 40 / 70 / 100 / 130 (+17.5% missing health, capped at 70% missing health) for 2.5 seconds. Tough It Out resets Olaf's auto-attack timer. Tough It Out has a cooldown of 16 / 15 / 14 / 13 / 12 seconds and costs 50 mana. Tough It Out is Olaf's primary steroid ability that transforms him from a bruiser into a berserker — the 80% attack speed at max rank combined with Berserker Rage's passive attack speed means low-health Olaf attacks faster than almost any champion in the game. The shield scales with missing health, meaning it is strongest when Olaf is at his most dangerous — at low health with maximum Berserker Rage stacks, the shield buys just enough time for Olaf's amplified life steal to kick in and heal him back up. The auto-attack reset also increases Olaf's burst damage in short trades.
Reckless Swing (E) causes Olaf to strike his target, dealing 70 / 115 / 160 / 205 / 250 (+50% AD) true damage to the enemy and costing Olaf 28 / 46 / 64 / 82 / 100 (+20% AD) health. If Reckless Swing kills the target, the health cost is refunded. Each basic attack reduces Reckless Swing's cooldown by 1 second (2 seconds against monsters). Reckless Swing has a cooldown of 11 / 10 / 9 / 8 / 7 seconds. Reckless Swing is one of the most feared abilities in top lane because it deals true damage that cannot be reduced by armor, magic resist, or any damage reduction — 250 (+50% AD) true damage on a 7-second cooldown that is further reduced by auto attacks means Olaf can cast Reckless Swing multiple times in an extended fight. The health cost keeps Olaf at lower health which actually synergizes with Berserker Rage, meaning using Reckless Swing makes Olaf hit faster and life steal more. Tanks who stack armor against Olaf are particularly punished because Reckless Swing ignores all their defenses.
Ragnarok (R) passively grants Olaf 10 / 15 / 20 bonus armor and magic resistance. When activated, Olaf removes all crowd control effects and becomes immune to all disabling effects for 3 seconds, gains 10 / 20 / 30 (+25% AD) bonus attack damage, and gains 20 / 45 / 70% bonus movement speed toward visible enemy champions for 1 second. Hitting an enemy champion with a basic attack or Reckless Swing extends the duration by up to 2.5 seconds. Ragnarok has a cooldown of 100 / 90 / 80 seconds and costs 100 mana. Ragnarok is the ultimate anti-CC ability in League of Legends — complete crowd control immunity means Olaf cannot be stopped by stuns, roots, knockups, suppressions, or any other form of CC, which is devastating against teams that rely on CC to peel their carries. The bonus AD and movement speed toward enemies means Olaf can activate Ragnarok and charge directly at the enemy ADC or mid laner, and there is literally nothing the enemy team can do to stop him except killing him outright. The passive armor and magic resistance also provide meaningful tankiness even when Ragnarok is on cooldown.
Strengths
- Olaf becomes exponentially more dangerous as his health drops because Berserker Rage grants up to 107.84% bonus attack speed and 27.67% life steal at 70% missing health, creating a unique fight dynamic where enemies who fail to burst Olaf from full health watch him become an unkillable berserker who heals back everything through auto attacks — this passive alone wins countless trades and all-ins because opponents underestimate how much stronger Olaf gets at low health — Combined with Tough It Out's missing-health shield and attack speed steroid, low-health Olaf achieves absurd attack speed levels that make his life steal nearly impossible to outdamage
- Undertow is one of the most oppressive laning tools in top lane because picking up the axe reduces the 9-second cooldown by 4.5 seconds, allowing Olaf to throw axes every 4.5 seconds for 270 (+100% bonus AD) physical damage with a 50% slow and 20% armor reduction — this gives Olaf ranged poke, wave clear, and chase potential that most melee top laners cannot answer, and the armor reduction makes every subsequent auto attack and Reckless Swing hit harder — In extended chases, Olaf can throw and pick up axes continuously, permanently slowing the target while dealing massive damage
- Reckless Swing's true damage completely ignores armor, magic resist, and damage reduction, dealing 250 (+50% AD) true damage on a 7-second cooldown that is reduced by 1 second per auto attack — this means tanks who stack armor against Olaf are punished just as hard as squishies, and in extended fights where Olaf is attacking rapidly with Berserker Rage and Tough It Out, Reckless Swing comes off cooldown every few seconds for repeated bursts of unavoidable damage — The health cost synergizes with Berserker Rage by keeping Olaf at lower health where his attack speed and life steal are amplified
- Ragnarok's complete crowd control immunity makes Olaf the single hardest champion in the game to peel because no stun, root, knockup, or suppression can stop him for the entire duration — activating Ragnarok and running at the enemy carry with Ghost forces the enemy team to either kill Olaf through pure damage or watch their backline die, and many team compositions simply cannot deal with a CC-immune bruiser charging at their carries — The bonus AD and movement speed toward enemies ensures Olaf reaches his target, and extending the duration through auto attacks means Olaf can remain CC-immune for over 5 seconds in a fight
Weaknesses
- Olaf is extremely vulnerable to kiting because he has no dashes, no blinks, and no gap closers other than raw movement speed from Ragnarok and Ghost — champions with strong slows, dashes, or displacement abilities can keep Olaf at arm's length and whittle him down before he reaches them, and if Olaf cannot auto attack during Ragnarok his CC immunity expires without achieving anything — Late-game ADCs with high mobility like Vayne, Ezreal, or Kai'Sa can kite Olaf indefinitely, and mages with long-range CC like Lux or Morgana can slow Olaf's advance even if they cannot root him during Ragnarok
- Olaf falls off significantly in the late game because his kit is designed for extended melee combat but late-game carries deal enough damage to burst him before his life steal can sustain him — Ragnarok's CC immunity becomes less valuable when enemies have enough raw damage to kill Olaf through it, and his lack of hard CC means he contributes nothing to teamfights if he cannot reach and kill a priority target — Games that extend to 35+ minutes often see Olaf's impact diminish as ADCs outscale his bruiser build with critical strike damage and armor penetration
- Reckless Swing's health cost means Olaf is constantly damaging himself, which makes him vulnerable to being bursted down by coordinated enemies — while the health cost synergizes with Berserker Rage in 1v1 situations, in teamfights where multiple enemies focus Olaf, the self-damage from Reckless Swing can push him into lethal range before his life steal can compensate — Smart enemies wait for Olaf to use Reckless Swing before committing burst damage when he is at his lowest health
- Olaf has no utility for his team beyond raw damage and being a frontline threat — he has no shields, no heals for allies, no hard CC, and no zone control, meaning if Olaf falls behind or cannot reach enemy carries, he contributes almost nothing to teamfights compared to tanks like Ornn or Malphite who provide massive team-wide CC regardless of their gold income — In games where Olaf's team needs a frontline tank or engage tool, Olaf's selfish kit leaves a gap in the team composition
Recommended Runes
Top Lane — Conqueror (Precision)
The recommended rune page for Olaf top is Conqueror with a strong win rate on u.gg Patch 16.6. Conqueror synergizes perfectly with Olaf's extended trading pattern, stacking rapidly through auto attacks and Reckless Swing to provide bonus AD and healing.
- Conqueror — Grants stacking adaptive force per attack or ability hit on enemy champions, up to 12 stacks. At full stacks, Conqueror heals for a percentage of damage dealt. Conqueror is ideal for Olaf because his rapid auto attacks with Berserker Rage and Tough It Out stack it to full almost instantly, and the healing at full stacks supplements Berserker Rage's life steal to make Olaf nearly unkillable in extended fights. The bonus AD also scales Undertow, Reckless Swing, and auto-attack damage.
- Triumph — Restores health on champion takedowns. Triumph keeps Olaf alive after winning close fights, providing clutch healing that can turn a 1v2 into a double kill when the second opponent arrives and Olaf is already healing from the first kill.
- Legend: Alacrity — Grants bonus attack speed from champion takedowns and large monster kills. Legend: Alacrity further amplifies Olaf's already high attack speed, making Berserker Rage's low-health scaling even more devastating and reducing Reckless Swing's effective cooldown by allowing more auto attacks between casts.
- Last Stand — Deals increased damage when below 60% health, up to 11% bonus damage at 30% health. Last Stand is the perfect rune for Olaf because he naturally fights at low health due to Berserker Rage's scaling — the bonus damage multiplier kicks in exactly when Olaf is at his most dangerous with maximum attack speed and life steal, creating a synergy loop where low health means more attack speed, more life steal, and more damage simultaneously.
Secondary — Inspiration
- Magical Footwear — Grants free Slightly Magical Boots at 12 minutes (reduced by takedowns). Magical Footwear saves Olaf 300 gold on boots and provides slightly more movement speed than normal boots, which is valuable for a champion who relies on running enemies down. The gold savings accelerate Olaf's first item spike.
- Cosmic Insight — Grants bonus summoner spell haste and item haste. Cosmic Insight reduces the cooldown on Ghost and Flash, giving Olaf more frequent access to his critical mobility tools. Lower Ghost cooldown is especially impactful because Ghost is Olaf's primary gap-closing tool in combination with Ragnarok.
Stat Shards
- Adaptive Force — Extra AD increases damage on Undertow, Reckless Swing, and auto attacks, directly amplifying Olaf's trading and all-in power.
- Movement Speed — Bonus movement speed helps Olaf stick to targets and pick up Undertow axes more efficiently, which is critical for a champion with no dashes.
- Health Scaling — Bonus health improves survivability in early trades and scales into the mid game, giving Olaf more effective health to work with as Berserker Rage's life steal heals him.
Recommended Item Build
Based on data from ranked Olaf matches tracked across multiple stat sites on Patch 16.6, here are the highest winrate build paths.
Top Lane Build
#### Early Game (0-10 min)
- Doran's Blade — Grants AD, health, and omnivamp. Doran's Blade is the standard starting item for Olaf because the AD improves Undertow poke and Reckless Swing damage, the health provides early survivability, and the omnivamp supplements Berserker Rage's life steal for stronger sustain during trades and laning.
- Health Potion — A Health Potion supplements Olaf's sustain during the first few levels before Berserker Rage's life steal becomes significant, ensuring Olaf stays healthy enough to trade aggressively and push his early game advantage.
#### Core Build (10-20 min)
- Stridebreaker — Grants AD, health, attack speed, and ability haste, with a passive that deals bonus damage on hit and grants movement speed on basic attacks. Stridebreaker is Olaf's optimal first item with a 57.08% win rate because the movement speed passive helps Olaf stick to targets — a critical weakness for a champion with no dashes. The AD and attack speed amplify Berserker Rage's scaling, the health improves survivability, and the ability haste reduces Undertow and Reckless Swing cooldowns for more frequent ability usage.
- Plated Steelcaps — Grants armor and reduces incoming basic attack damage. Plated Steelcaps are the standard boot choice for Olaf because as a melee bruiser who runs into the enemy team, reducing auto-attack damage from ADCs and fighters keeps him alive longer during extended fights. Mercury's Treads are a strong alternative against heavy CC or AP compositions.
- Death's Dance — Grants AD, armor, and ability haste, with a passive that converts a portion of damage taken into a bleed over time and restores health on champion takedowns. Death's Dance synergizes exceptionally well with Olaf because the damage-over-time conversion gives his life steal and Berserker Rage time to heal him before the full damage applies, and the takedown healing triggers an enormous burst of healing when Olaf gets a kill in a teamfight. The armor and AD directly improve his combat stats.
#### Late Game (25+ min)
- Experimental Hexplate — Grants AD, health, and ability haste, with a passive that grants bonus movement speed and attack speed after casting your ultimate. Experimental Hexplate is a perfect complement to Ragnarok because activating Olaf's ultimate triggers the movement speed and attack speed bonuses, turning Olaf into an unstoppable freight train that charges at enemy carries with CC immunity, massive movement speed, and amplified attack speed all at once. The 61.8% win rate reflects how devastating this combination is.
- Sterak's Gage — Grants AD and health, with a passive shield that triggers when taking a burst of damage. Sterak's Gage provides a massive shield when Olaf is bursted in teamfights, buying time for his life steal and Berserker Rage to kick in. The shield synergizes with Olaf's low-health playstyle by preventing him from being one-shot before his sustain can save him.
- Sundered Sky — Grants AD, health, and ability haste, with a passive that causes the first attack on each champion to critically strike and heal based on missing health. Sundered Sky provides burst healing on the first auto attack against each enemy champion, which combined with Olaf's rapid target switching in teamfights provides enormous sustain. The missing health healing synergizes with Berserker Rage's low-health scaling.
Ability Priority
Top Lane: Q > E > W (R at 6, 11, 16)
- Undertow (Q) — Max first. Levels at 1, 4, 5, 7, 9. Each rank increases Undertow's damage from 70 to 270, increases the slow from 30% to 50%, and increases the mana cost from 50 to 70. Maxing Q first is essential because Undertow is Olaf's primary trading tool in lane — the increasing damage makes each axe throw a significant chunk of the opponent's health bar, the increasing slow makes it harder for enemies to escape, and the 20% armor reduction improves all subsequent physical damage. With the axe pickup reducing cooldown by 4.5 seconds, maxed Undertow can be thrown every 4.5 seconds for devastating poke.
- Ragnarok (R) — Level at 6, 11, and 16. Each rank increases Ragnarok's passive armor and magic resistance from 10 to 20, increases the bonus AD from 10 to 30 (+25% AD), increases the movement speed from 20% to 70%, and reduces the cooldown from 100 to 80 seconds. Level 6 is an enormous power spike because Ragnarok's CC immunity combined with Ghost makes Olaf nearly impossible to escape from in a gank or all-in.
- Reckless Swing (E) — Max second. Levels at 2, 8, 10, 12, 13. Each rank increases the true damage from 70 to 250 and reduces the cooldown from 11 to 7 seconds. Maxing E second provides a massive increase in Olaf's burst damage through unavoidable true damage, and the cooldown reduction means Olaf can use Reckless Swing multiple times in extended fights.
- Tough It Out (W) — Max last. Levels at 3, 14, 15, 17, 18. Each rank increases the bonus attack speed from 40% to 80%, increases the shield from 10 to 130, and reduces the cooldown from 16 to 12 seconds. While the attack speed and shield scaling are valuable, Q and E provide more impactful combat improvements through damage, slow, and armor reduction.
Summoner Spells
- Ghost — Ghost is the premier summoner spell for Olaf because it provides extended movement speed that lets him run down enemies during Ragnarok's CC immunity window. Ghost + Ragnarok is one of the most terrifying combinations in League of Legends — an Olaf sprinting at maximum speed with CC immunity and escalating attack speed from Berserker Rage is nearly impossible to escape without Flash. Ghost's long duration also helps Olaf stick to kiting targets in extended chases.
- Flash — Flash provides instant repositioning for both offensive and defensive purposes. Flash extends Olaf's engage range when combined with Ragnarok for surprise all-ins, and provides an escape tool when Ragnarok is on cooldown. Flash + Reckless Swing for an unexpected burst of true damage can catch opponents off guard in lane.
Playstyle Tips
Early Game / Laning Phase (0-14 min)
Olaf's early game is about aggressively trading with Undertow and establishing lane dominance, because his early base damage, armor shred, and Berserker Rage sustain make him one of the strongest level 1-5 laners in the game.
Start Undertow at level 1 for ranged poke and wave manipulation. Take Reckless Swing at level 2 for true damage burst trades. Take Tough It Out at level 3 for the attack speed steroid and shield in extended fights. From level 1, look to poke the enemy laner with Undertow whenever they step up to CS — throw the axe through them and pick it up to reset the cooldown, then throw it again. This constant pressure forces enemies to choose between taking CS and taking damage.
At level 2, Olaf's all-in becomes dangerous. Land Undertow for the slow and armor reduction, walk up and auto attack, then hit Reckless Swing for true damage. Most top laners cannot outtrade this combo, especially as Berserker Rage ramps up Olaf's attack speed as he takes damage during the trade. At level 3 with Tough It Out, Olaf can commit to extended all-ins where the attack speed steroid and shield make him nearly unbeatable in sustained combat.
Always manage your Undertow positioning — throw axes in the direction you want to chase so picking them up moves you toward the enemy. In a 1v1, throw the axe behind the enemy so you walk through them to pick it up, keeping pressure. In lane, throw axes through the wave to poke and push simultaneously.
Mid Game & Teamfighting (14-25 min)
Mid-game Olaf with Stridebreaker and Death's Dance is a fearsome split-push threat who can also teamfight effectively by activating Ragnarok and Ghost to charge through the enemy team directly at their carries.
The ideal mid-game pattern depends on the game state. If Olaf is ahead, look to split push aggressively — Olaf is one of the strongest 1v1 duelists in the game, and few champions can match him in a side lane with his sustain, true damage, and all-in potential. If the enemy sends two people to stop your split push, your team has a numbers advantage elsewhere. If they send one person, you likely kill them with Ragnarok and run them down.
In teamfights, Olaf's role is to dive the enemy backline. Wait for the fight to start, identify the highest priority target (usually the ADC or fed carry), activate Ragnarok and Ghost, and charge straight at them. The CC immunity means the enemy support's stun, the tank's knockup, and the mage's root all do nothing to stop you. Focus on auto attacking constantly to extend Ragnarok's duration, use Reckless Swing for burst true damage, and throw Undertow ahead of fleeing targets to slow them.
Do not activate Ragnarok preemptively before the fight — the duration is limited, and experienced enemies will simply wait for it to expire before engaging. Activate it the moment you commit to the dive, ideally when you are already in range to start auto attacking.
Late Game (25+ min)
Late-game Olaf with full items is a split-push focused bruiser who excels at side lane pressure and can still threaten enemy carries in teamfights, but must be increasingly careful about being kited or bursted by full-build carries.
In late-game teamfights, Olaf's primary challenge is reaching the enemy backline before dying. Full-build ADCs deal enormous damage that can kill Olaf through Ragnarok if he does not reach them quickly. Use Ghost and Experimental Hexplate's movement speed boost along with Ragnarok for maximum approach speed. Coordinate with your team — have them engage first to draw enemy cooldowns, then dive the backline once key CC abilities have been used.
Split pushing remains powerful in the late game because Olaf's sustained damage and sustain make him nearly impossible to 1v1. Push side lanes to draw pressure, then use Teleport (if taken) or join teamfights at objectives. If the enemy sends a champion who can kite you (Vayne, Quinn), consider grouping with your team instead.
Death's Dance and Sterak's Gage provide survivability against burst, but Olaf must still respect coordinated focus fire. Position behind your frontline until Ragnarok is needed, then commit fully — half-committing with Olaf is the worst possible play because his kit provides no disengagement tools.
Matchups
Top Lane
#### Favorable
- Shyvana — Olaf wins approximately 64.6% against Shyvana in the top lane. Shyvana is a scaling fighter who lacks the early game tools to deal with Olaf's relentless aggression — Undertow's armor shred and slow make it impossible for Shyvana to trade back effectively, Reckless Swing's true damage ignores any armor Shyvana builds, and Ragnarok prevents Shyvana's Dragon's Descent knockback from peeling Olaf. Shyvana needs to scale with items and levels, but Olaf denies her farm and creates a massive early lead.
- Quinn — Olaf wins approximately 60.8% against Quinn in the top lane. Quinn is a ranged lane bully who normally punishes melee champions, but Olaf's Ragnarok completely negates Quinn's Vault disengage and Blinding Assault's nearsight, allowing Olaf to run her down without counterplay. Before level 6, Olaf can sustain through Quinn's poke with Berserker Rage and Tough It Out, and a single landed Undertow into Ghost forces Quinn to Flash or die.
- Dr. Mundo — Olaf wins approximately 58.6% against Dr. Mundo in the top lane. Dr. Mundo is a tank who relies on regeneration and health stacking, but Reckless Swing's true damage cuts through Mundo's massive health pool regardless of his armor, and Undertow's 20% armor reduction makes Olaf's auto attacks hit hard despite Mundo's tank build. Ragnarok also prevents Mundo from slowing Olaf with Infected Bonesaw, letting Olaf chase Mundo down whenever he overextends.
#### Even
- Sett — Sett is a skill matchup because both champions thrive in extended melee combat. Sett's Haymaker deals true damage in the center and provides a shield, which mirrors Olaf's Reckless Swing true damage and Tough It Out shield. The key is dodging Sett's Haymaker center while sustaining through his damage with Berserker Rage. Olaf wins extended trades if he side-steps Haymaker, but Sett wins short trades with The Show Stopper's burst.
- Garen — Garen is an even matchup because Garen's Decisive Strike silence prevents Olaf from casting abilities during trades, and Garen's passive regeneration can outheal Undertow poke over time. However, Olaf's Reckless Swing true damage ignores Garen's Courage damage reduction, and Ragnarok prevents Garen from silencing Olaf during all-ins. The matchup often comes down to whether Olaf can force extended fights or Garen can trade in short bursts and regenerate.
- Jax — Jax is a skill matchup that shifts as the game progresses. Jax's Counter Strike dodges Olaf's auto attacks and stuns, which neutralizes Berserker Rage's attack speed scaling. However, Reckless Swing cannot be dodged and deals full true damage through Counter Strike. Ragnarok makes Olaf immune to Counter Strike's stun. Early game favors Olaf, but Jax outscales with items due to his hybrid damage and split-push power.
#### Unfavorable
- Kayle — Olaf wins only approximately 44.7% against Kayle in the top lane. Kayle is a scaling hypercarry who becomes ranged at level 6 and increasingly powerful with levels and items. While Olaf dominates the early levels, Kayle's Divine Judgment (R) provides complete damage immunity that negates Olaf's all-in, and after level 11 Kayle's ranged waves and movement speed make it increasingly difficult for Olaf to reach her. If Olaf does not snowball a massive lead before level 11, Kayle outscales him completely.
- Vladimir — Olaf wins only approximately 45.8% against Vladimir in the top lane. Vladimir is an AP sustain mage who avoids Olaf's all-in with Sanguine Pool's untargetability and outheals Olaf's poke with Transfusion's healing. Olaf cannot interact with Vladimir during Sanguine Pool, wasting Ragnarok's precious duration, and Vladimir's percentage health damage scales well against Olaf's bruiser build. Vladimir outscales Olaf significantly and wins most extended lane phases through superior sustain and safety.
- Camille — Olaf wins only approximately 46.0% against Camille in the top lane. Camille's Hookshot provides mobility that Olaf cannot match, her Precision Protocol's true damage on second cast rivals Reckless Swing's damage output, and Hextech Ultimatum locks Olaf in an area where Camille can kite around him. Camille can short-trade with Precision Protocol and Hookshot away before Olaf's sustained damage becomes threatening, and she outscales Olaf as a split-push threat.
Recent Patch Changes
Patch 26.6 / 16.6 (March 2026) — Buff
Riot buffed Olaf to improve his jungle performance while maintaining his top lane viability, leaning into his identity as a risky low-health fighter.
- Base Attack Speed: Increased from 0.694 to 0.72. This base attack speed increase improves Olaf's auto-attack damage output at all stages of the game, improving jungle clear speed and making his Berserker Rage scaling even more impactful since the bonus percentage attack speed from his passive applies on top of a higher base value.
- Undertow (Q): Slow amount changed from 25 / 30 / 35 / 40 / 45% to 30 / 35 / 40 / 45 / 50%, with slow duration changed to 1–3 seconds based on distance traveled. This buff increases Undertow's slow at every rank, making it harder for enemies to escape Olaf's chases and ganks. The distance-based duration rewards landing long-range axes with a longer slow.
- Reckless Swing (E): Self-damage increased from 30% of damage dealt to 40% of damage dealt. This change increases the risk of using Reckless Swing by dealing more self-damage, but synergizes with Berserker Rage by pushing Olaf to lower health faster where his attack speed and life steal are amplified. This embodies Riot's stated goal of leaning into Olaf's "risky, low-health fighter" identity.
- Tough It Out (W): Bug fix — casting W while the previous cast is still active now properly re-applies its effects rather than just refreshing the prior cast, correctly granting the attack reset and updated attack speed value.
- Undertow (Q): Bug fix — enemies struck only by the lollipop at the end of Q are now slowed for the proper amount of time instead of receiving a fixed 30% slow.
