Best Riven Build & Guide (2026) — League of Legends
The definitive Riven build guide for 2026. Optimal items, runes, ability order, playstyle tips, and matchup advice backed by data from thousands of ranked League of Legends matches.
Riven is League of Legends' Exile — a highly mobile AD caster who chains Broken Wings dashes with auto-attack cancels, stuns enemies with Ki Burst, shields incoming damage with Valor, and executes low-health targets with Wind Slash's missing-health scaling. Riven is played primarily as a top laner (50.56% win rate on OP.GG Patch 16.06 Emerald+, 51.66% on LoLalytics, A/S Tier) with a 3.36% pick rate and 2.54% ban rate. Whether you are an aggressive lane bully who snowballs early kills with Ignite and Conqueror stacking, a split-push duelist who leverages Blade of the Exile's bonus AD to win any 1v1 sidelane fight, or a teamfight flanker who uses Valor and Broken Wings mobility to reach the enemy backline, this guide covers everything you need to dominate with Riven in 2026.
Riven Overview
Riven operates as a fighter/assassin whose power comes from her unique ability to chain dashes, auto-attack resets, and crowd control into devastating burst combos, amplified by Runic Blade's passive empowered auto-attacks and Blade of the Exile's 25% bonus AD steroid. She is played almost exclusively as a top laner (3.36% pick rate, 50.56% win rate on OP.GG Emerald+, 51.66% on LoLalytics) with niche viability in the mid lane and jungle. Her ban rate is 2.54%, reflecting her reputation as a high-skill-ceiling champion who can snowball games out of control in the hands of experienced players.
Unlike sustained-damage bruisers like Darius or Garen who rely on base stats and simple trading patterns, Riven is designed around animation canceling and ability weaving — her Broken Wings provides three dashes with a knockup on the third cast, Ki Burst provides instant AoE stun, Valor provides a shield and dash that can be chained into abilities, and Runic Blade empowers every auto-attack between abilities. Riven's challenge is executing her combos flawlessly while managing cooldowns and positioning, because her damage and survivability are entirely ability-dependent with no mana costs to gate her.
Runic Blade (Passive) causes Riven's ability casts to generate a stack of Charge for 6 seconds, refreshing on subsequent casts and stacking up to 3 times. Riven's basic attacks are empowered to each consume a stack to deal bonus physical damage equal to 30% – 46.76% (based on level) AD, reduced to 15% – 23.38% AD against structures. Runic Blade also deals 50 bonus physical damage to monsters. Runic Blade is affected by critical strike modifiers and applies life steal at 100% effectiveness. This passive is the engine of Riven's damage output — weaving auto-attacks between every ability to consume Runic Blade stacks is what separates good Riven players from great ones, as skipping auto-attacks between abilities can reduce her combo damage by 30% or more.
Broken Wings (Q) can be activated three times before the ability goes on cooldown, with a 0.3125-second static cooldown between casts. If Riven does not recast within 4 seconds of the previous cast, it goes on cooldown. Each cast deals 45/75/105/135/165 (+60/65/70/75/80% bonus AD) physical damage to nearby enemies and dashes Riven 225 units. The third cast knocks back enemies 75 units over 0.5 seconds and can cross terrain. Broken Wings has a 13-second cooldown. This is Riven's signature ability — the three dashes provide gap-closing, repositioning, and a knockup, while the damage with Runic Blade weaving forms the core of every Riven combo. Animation canceling the Q casts into auto-attacks is the fundamental Riven mechanic.
Ki Burst (W) causes Riven to emit a flash of runic energy, dealing 65/95/125/155/185 (+100% bonus AD) physical damage to nearby enemies within 300 units and stunning them for 0.75 seconds. Ki Burst has an 11/10/9/8/7-second cooldown. This is Riven's crowd control tool — the instant AoE stun guarantees follow-up damage from Broken Wings and empowered auto-attacks, interrupts enemy abilities and channels, and provides reliable lockdown during trades and all-ins. Ki Burst can be animation-canceled during Broken Wings dashes and Valor for instant stun application.
Valor (E) causes Riven to dash 250 units in the target direction (cannot cross terrain) while granting herself a shield for 1.5 seconds that absorbs 70/95/120/145/170 (+110% bonus AD) damage. Valor has a 10/9/8/7/6-second cooldown. This is Riven's survivability and mobility tool — the shield absorbs incoming damage during trades, the dash provides additional mobility for engage or disengage, and the 110% bonus AD scaling means the shield becomes massive with items. Valor into Ki Burst is Riven's fastest engage pattern, closing the gap while stunning instantly.
Blade of the Exile (R) empowers Riven's broken sword for 15 seconds, granting 25% AD bonus attack damage, 75 bonus attack range, and increased range on Broken Wings and Ki Burst. After 0.5 seconds, Riven can cast Wind Slash once during the duration. Wind Slash fires a projectile in a cone at 1100 range, dealing 100/150/200 (+60% bonus AD) minimum physical damage to 300/450/600 (+180% bonus AD) maximum physical damage, scaling from 0% to 200% based on the target's missing health. Blade of the Exile has a 120/90/60-second cooldown. This is Riven's ultimate power spike — the 25% bonus AD amplifies every ability and Runic Blade proc in her kit, the bonus range extends her effective trading range, and Wind Slash's missing-health execute secures kills on targets who survive her burst combo.
Strengths
- Riven's animation canceling and ability weaving give her one of the highest burst damage outputs of any fighter in the game — chaining Broken Wings dashes with auto-attacks, Ki Burst stun, Valor shield, and Blade of the Exile's 25% bonus AD steroid allows her to delete squishy targets in under two seconds while also having the mobility to escape afterward — At full build, a perfectly executed fast combo (E-R-Flash-W-AA-Q-AA-Q-AA-Q-R2) deals over 2500 physical damage before the target can react, and the mobility from three Broken Wings dashes plus Valor means Riven can reposition constantly during fights
- Riven has no mana or energy resource, meaning she can trade freely and frequently in lane without worrying about running out of resources — this gives her a significant advantage over mana-dependent top laners who must manage their resource bar, allowing Riven to force short trades repeatedly until the enemy is low enough to all-in — Champions like Renekton, Camille, and Jax must carefully manage their fury, mana, or passive stacks, while Riven can use abilities on every cooldown rotation without punishment
- Valor's 110% bonus AD shield scaling combined with Blade of the Exile's 25% bonus AD steroid gives Riven exceptional survivability for a damage-focused champion — the shield absorbs a massive amount of damage during trades and teamfights, effectively giving Riven bonus health on a short cooldown — With Death's Dance and Sundered Sky providing additional sustain, Riven becomes extremely difficult to burst down while still dealing assassin-level damage
- Riven's three Broken Wings dashes, Valor dash, and Flash give her unmatched mobility among top lane fighters — she can chase fleeing targets across the map, escape ganks through terrain with third-cast Q, and flank teamfights from unexpected angles — The mobility also allows Riven to roam effectively, helping her jungler in skirmishes and ganking mid lane faster than most top laners
Weaknesses
- Riven has one of the highest skill floors and skill ceilings in the game — players who cannot animation cancel, manage cooldowns, or execute combos properly will deal significantly less damage and lose trades that a skilled Riven would win, making her a poor choice for players new to the champion — The difference between a beginner Riven and a mastered Riven is enormous; without fast combo execution, her damage output drops by 30-40% because missed auto-attack weaving wastes Runic Blade stacks
- Riven is entirely cooldown-dependent with no sustained damage outside of her abilities — if she uses Broken Wings and Ki Burst without securing a kill, she is vulnerable for the 13-second Q cooldown window where she has no mobility, crowd control, or significant damage — Champions like Jax, Fiora, and Tryndamere can punish Riven's cooldown windows with sustained auto-attack damage, and smart opponents will disengage during Riven's combo and re-engage when her abilities are down
- Riven struggles against champions who stack armor and have built-in sustain or damage reduction — tanks like Malphite and bruisers like Garen can absorb her combo with armor itemization and out-sustain her with passive healing, making it impossible for Riven to kill them in lane without a significant lead — Riven's 46.05% win rate against Garen and 46.37% against Malphite highlight how armor-stacking matchups neutralize her lethality and ability-based damage
- Riven is vulnerable to ranged harassment and kiting in top lane — champions like Vayne and Heimerdinger can poke Riven before she reaches them with Broken Wings, and her only gap-closer requires using her primary damage ability to close distance, reducing her burst when she finally reaches the target — Riven's 43.86% win rate against Vayne demonstrates how ranged top laners can zone her from CS and punish every engage attempt
Recommended Runes
Top Lane — Conqueror (Precision)
The recommended rune page for Riven top lane is Conqueror, the dominant keystone with a 72.39% pick rate and 51.34% win rate on OP.GG. Conqueror stacks adaptive force as Riven chains abilities and auto-attacks in rapid succession, reaching full stacks faster than almost any other champion due to her ability weaving playstyle.
- Conqueror — Grants stacking adaptive force per ability hit and auto-attack against enemy champions, with omnivamp healing at maximum stacks. Conqueror is the primary keystone for Riven because her fast combo (Q-AA-Q-AA-Q-AA-W-AA) stacks Conqueror to full in a single trade rotation, and the bonus AD amplifies Runic Blade procs, Broken Wings damage, and Ki Burst damage multiplicatively. At full stacks, the omnivamp healing combined with Valor's shield provides meaningful sustain during extended fights. Conqueror has a 72.39% pick rate on OP.GG.
- Triumph — Restores health and grants bonus gold on champion takedowns. Triumph is essential for Riven's aggressive all-in playstyle — after securing a kill in a 1v2 or teamfight, the burst heal from Triumph can save Riven from dying to follow-up damage and enable multi-kill combos. Triumph has a 98.4% pick rate on OP.GG.
- Legend: Haste — Grants stacking ability haste for each champion takedown. Ability haste is Riven's most valuable stat because it reduces cooldowns on all four abilities — lower Broken Wings cooldown means more frequent combo rotations, lower Valor cooldown means more shields and dashes, and lower Ki Burst cooldown means more stun opportunities. Legend: Haste has a 94.4% pick rate on OP.GG.
- Last Stand — Increases damage dealt when below 60% health. Last Stand synergizes with Riven's all-in fighting style — she often drops to low health during extended trades before Valor's shield and Death's Dance healing kick in, and the bonus damage at low health can turn close fights in her favor. Last Stand has a 94.9% pick rate on OP.GG.
Secondary — Inspiration
- Jack Of All Trades — Grants bonus stats when building items with varied stat profiles. Jack Of All Trades is the standard secondary choice because Riven's core build includes ability haste, AD, lethality, and health from various items, naturally activating the bonus. Jack Of All Trades has a 66.1% pick rate on OP.GG.
- Cash Back — Returns a percentage of gold spent on completed items. Cash Back accelerates Riven's item spikes, which is critical because Riven's power scales dramatically with each completed item — reaching Axiom Arc and Sundered Sky faster amplifies her mid-game dominance. Cash Back has a 55.6% pick rate on OP.GG.
Stat Shards
- Ability Haste — Bonus ability haste reduces Broken Wings and Ki Burst cooldowns for more frequent trading in lane. Ability haste is the most valuable offensive stat for Riven because her damage is entirely cooldown-gated. Ability Haste has a 68.4% pick rate on OP.GG.
- Adaptive Force — Bonus AD increases the damage of all abilities, Runic Blade procs, and Valor's shield scaling. Adaptive Force provides the most immediate combat power for lane trades.
- Health Scaling — Bonus health that scales with level provides durability in the mid and late game, helping Riven survive burst damage during all-ins and teamfights. Health Scaling has a 71.7% pick rate on OP.GG.
Alternative Secondary — Sorcery
Sorcery secondary is a viable alternative with a 13.99% pick rate and 49.08% win rate on OP.GG. Sorcery secondary typically runs Transcendence for additional ability haste scaling and Gathering Storm for late-game AD. This setup sacrifices early-game economic advantages from Inspiration for stronger scaling into the late game.
Recommended Item Build
Based on data from ranked Riven matches tracked across multiple stat sites on Patch 16.6, here are the highest winrate build paths.
Top Lane Build
#### Early Game (0-10 min)
- Doran's Blade — The standard starting item for Riven, providing attack damage, health, and omnivamp. Doran's Blade gives Riven the best combination of offensive stats and sustain for early trading — the AD amplifies Runic Blade procs and ability damage, the health provides durability for aggressive trades, and the omnivamp keeps Riven healthy through repeated short trades. Doran's Blade has a 51.9% win rate on LoLalytics.
- Health Potion — A single Health Potion provides additional sustain during the laning phase, allowing Riven to stay in lane longer after aggressive trades and maintain CS pressure.
#### Core Build (10-20 min)
- Axiom Arc — Riven's primary first item, Axiom Arc grants attack damage, lethality, and ability haste with a passive that refunds a portion of ultimate cooldown on champion takedowns. Axiom Arc is the optimal first item for Riven because it provides the three stats she values most — AD for ability and Runic Blade scaling, lethality for armor penetration against squishy targets, and ability haste for faster cooldown rotations. The ultimate cooldown refund passive is exceptionally valuable because Blade of the Exile's 25% bonus AD steroid and Wind Slash execute are Riven's most impactful tools, and having them available more frequently means more kill opportunities. Axiom Arc is the core of Riven's highest pick rate and win rate build path.
- Ionian Boots of Lucidity — Grants ability haste and summoner spell haste. Ionian Boots are the standard boot choice for Riven. The ability haste reduces all cooldowns including Broken Wings, which directly increases her damage output and mobility. The summoner spell haste reduces Flash and Ignite cooldowns — Flash is critical for Riven's Flash-W engage combo, and more frequent Ignite access means more kill pressure in lane.
- Sundered Sky — Grants attack damage, health, and ability haste with a passive that causes the first attack against each champion to deal bonus damage and heal Riven. Sundered Sky has a 56.31% win rate as part of the core build on LoLalytics. The bonus damage on first hit synergizes with Riven's burst pattern — she engages, deals her combo, and the Sundered Sky proc adds significant burst while also healing her, improving her ability to survive extended trades and teamfights.
#### Late Game (25+ min)
- Death's Dance — Grants attack damage, ability haste, and armor with a passive that converts a portion of damage taken into a bleed effect and cleanses the bleed on champion takedowns. Death's Dance is a staple defensive item for Riven because the damage delay gives Valor's shield and Triumph time to absorb and heal through incoming burst, and the takedown cleanse rewards Riven's aggressive playstyle by removing the stored bleed damage after each kill. The core three-item build of Axiom Arc, Sundered Sky, and Death's Dance has a 58.95% win rate on OP.GG.
- Serylda's Grudge — Grants attack damage, ability haste, and armor penetration with a passive that slows enemies hit by abilities. Serylda's Grudge is the optimal fourth item with a 63.86% win rate on OP.GG. The armor penetration ensures Riven's combo deals meaningful damage against targets who build armor in the late game, and the ability slow on Broken Wings and Ki Burst makes it significantly harder for targets to escape her combo.
- Endless Hunger — Grants attack damage and omnivamp with a passive shield that activates at low health. Endless Hunger provides an alternative to Serylda's Grudge when Riven needs sustain over penetration — the omnivamp heals through Riven's entire combo and Runic Blade procs, and the low-health shield provides a safety net during all-ins.
Ability Priority
Top Lane: Q > E > W (R at 6, 11, 16)
- Broken Wings (Q) — Max first. Each rank increases the base damage per cast from 45 to 165 and the bonus AD ratio from 60% to 80%. Maxing Q first provides the most damage output for both trading and wave clear because Broken Wings is Riven's primary damage source — every point in Q makes her combo stronger, her wave clear faster, and her all-in more lethal. The 13-second cooldown does not change with ranks, making the damage increase the primary benefit.
- Valor (E) — Max second. Each rank increases the shield from 70 to 170 (+110% bonus AD) and reduces the cooldown from 10 to 6 seconds. E max second provides both offensive and defensive scaling — the larger shield with 110% bonus AD ratio absorbs significantly more damage during trades and teamfights, and the cooldown reduction from 10 to 6 seconds means Valor is available for nearly every trade. The shorter cooldown also provides more frequent dashes for mobility.
- Ki Burst (W) — Max last. Each rank increases the damage from 65 to 185 (+100% bonus AD) and reduces the cooldown from 11 to 7 seconds. While Ki Burst's damage and cooldown both improve with ranks, the stun duration remains 0.75 seconds at all ranks, making the raw numbers less impactful than Q's damage increase or E's shield and cooldown improvement. W's primary value — the instant stun — does not scale with rank.
- Blade of the Exile (R) — Level at 6, 11, and 16. Each rank increases Wind Slash minimum damage from 100 to 200 and maximum damage from 300 to 600, while reducing the cooldown from 120 to 60 seconds. Level 6 is Riven's biggest power spike because Blade of the Exile grants 25% bonus AD which amplifies every ability in her kit, and Wind Slash provides a ranged execute that secures kills on targets who survive her melee combo.
Summoner Spells
- Flash — Flash is the essential summoner spell for Riven. Flash extends Riven's already impressive engage range — Flash into Ki Burst stun is her most reliable engage pattern at close range, and Flash can be used mid-Broken Wings animation to redirect dashes for unexpected angles. Flash also enables the iconic Flash-W-AA-Q combo that catches enemies off guard. Flash + Ignite has a 94.7% pick rate with 50.59% win rate on OP.GG.
- Ignite — Ignite provides kill pressure in lane and reduces healing on targets during all-ins. Ignite is the dominant summoner spell for Riven because her aggressive playstyle relies on securing early kills to snowball — the true damage over time often secures kills on targets who survive her burst combo by a sliver of health, and the grievous wounds counter healing-heavy top laners like Aatrox, Dr. Mundo, and Darius.
Playstyle Tips
Early Game / Laning Phase (0-14 min)
Riven's early game is about executing short trades with Broken Wings auto-attack weaving and Ki Burst stun, using Valor to absorb return damage, then disengaging before the enemy can retaliate during your cooldown window.
Start Broken Wings (Q) at level 1 for the triple-dash damage and Runic Blade stacking. Take Ki Burst (W) at level 2 for the stun that guarantees follow-up auto-attacks. Take Valor (E) at level 3 for the shield and additional dash. Your level 1-2 trading pattern is: Q1-AA-Q2-AA-W-AA-Q3-AA, weaving empowered auto-attacks between every ability to consume all Runic Blade stacks. This short trade deals massive damage while the knockup on Q3 prevents immediate retaliation.
At level 3, your full trading pattern adds Valor: E into the enemy (absorbing their return damage), W (instant stun), AA, Q1-AA-Q2-AA-Q3 (disengage with knockup). The shield from Valor absorbs incoming damage during the stun window, meaning Riven wins the health trade even if the raw damage numbers are close.
Riven's level 6 all-in with Blade of the Exile is one of the strongest in the top lane. Activate R before engaging to gain 25% bonus AD, then execute the full combo: E-R1-Flash-W-AA-Q1-AA-Q2-AA-Q3-AA-R2 (Wind Slash to execute). The bonus AD amplifies every ability and Runic Blade proc in the combo, and Wind Slash's missing-health scaling finishes off targets who would otherwise survive.
Mid Game & Skirmishing (14-25 min)
Mid-game Riven with Axiom Arc, Ionian Boots, and Sundered Sky is a devastating duelist and skirmisher who wins nearly every 1v1 sidelane matchup and can roam to teamfights with Blade of the Exile's bonus AD steroid for burst assassination on squishy targets.
Riven's mid-game priority is split pushing sidelanes to draw pressure, then using her superior mobility to collapse on objectives or teamfights faster than the enemy top laner. With Axiom Arc's ultimate cooldown refund, Riven can use Blade of the Exile aggressively in skirmishes and have it available again for the next fight.
In teamfights, Riven's role depends on team composition and positioning. If the enemy carries are accessible, Riven should flank with Blade of the Exile active, use E-Flash-W to stun priority targets, then burst them with the full combo and Wind Slash execute. If the enemy team has heavy peel, Riven can play front-to-back, using Broken Wings knockup and Ki Burst stun to disrupt the enemy frontline while dealing sustained damage with Conqueror stacks.
Death's Dance is a critical mid-game purchase because its damage delay passive synergizes with Riven's burst-then-sustain pattern — she dives in, deals her combo, and the bleed damage from Death's Dance is cleansed on each champion takedown, effectively making Riven healthier after every kill.
Late Game (25+ min)
Late-game Riven with Serylda's Grudge or Endless Hunger is a high-mobility, high-burst fighter who can still one-shot squishy targets with a full combo while having enough sustain and shielding from Death's Dance, Valor, and Sundered Sky to survive extended teamfights.
In the late game, Riven's split pushing becomes extremely powerful because she can 1v1 almost any champion with Blade of the Exile active, push waves rapidly with Broken Wings AoE, and escape ganks with four dashes (E + three Q casts). If the enemy sends multiple champions to match Riven's split push, her team can take objectives on the other side of the map.
Late-game teamfights require careful timing — Riven should wait for the enemy to use key cooldowns before engaging, because a well-timed Exhaust, Polymorph, or chain CC can kill Riven before she completes her combo. Use Valor's shield to absorb the first round of CC or abilities, then commit with the full burst combo. Wind Slash's missing-health scaling becomes increasingly powerful in the late game as enemies have more total health, meaning the execute threshold deals massive damage.
Matchups
Top Lane
#### Favorable
- Master Yi — Riven wins approximately 62.31% against Master Yi top on LoLalytics. Master Yi is a melee auto-attacker with no crowd control and limited defensive tools in lane. Riven's Ki Burst stun interrupts Master Yi's Meditate channel, Broken Wings outbursts his sustained damage in short trades, and Riven's mobility advantage means she can disengage whenever Master Yi activates Highlander and re-engage when it expires.
- Tahm Kench — Riven wins approximately 61.86% against Tahm Kench top on LoLalytics. Tahm Kench is a short-range tank who relies on stacking An Acquired Taste to devour enemies. Riven's mobility from Broken Wings and Valor allows her to dance around Tahm Kench's short range, land short trades with Ki Burst stun into empowered auto-attacks, and disengage before he can stack his passive. Riven's burst combo also overwhelms Tahm Kench's grey health shield before it activates.
- Shyvana — Riven wins approximately 61.10% against Shyvana top on LoLalytics. Shyvana lacks crowd control and reliable gap-closing in human form, making her vulnerable to Riven's aggressive short trades. Riven can dash in with Valor, stun with Ki Burst, combo with Broken Wings, and dash out before Shyvana can retaliate, and Riven's burst overwhelms Shyvana's sustain.
- K'Sante — Riven wins approximately 58.51% against K'Sante top on LoLalytics. Despite K'Sante's defensive tools and crowd control, Riven's faster combo execution and superior burst damage in short trades overwhelm K'Sante's slower trading pattern. Riven can bait K'Sante's Path Maker with Valor's dash and punish during the cooldown window.
- Warwick — Riven wins approximately 57.42% against Warwick top on LoLalytics. Riven's burst combo kills Warwick before his passive healing and E damage reduction can sustain him through the fight. Ki Burst stun interrupts Warwick's Infinite Duress channel, and Riven's mobility prevents Warwick from landing his Q hold for reliable trades.
#### Even
- Irelia — Riven fights approximately even against Irelia top (50.78% win rate on LoLalytics). Both champions are mobile AD fighters who excel at weaving auto-attacks between abilities. The matchup depends on Irelia's passive stacking — if Irelia enters the trade with fully stacked Ionian Fervor, her sustained DPS can overwhelm Riven. If Riven catches Irelia without passive stacks, her burst combo wins the trade.
- Urgot — Riven fights slightly unfavorably against Urgot top (47.66% win rate on LoLalytics). Urgot's ranged harass and Purge sustained damage can pressure Riven in lane, but Riven's mobility allows her to dodge Urgot's E flip and punish during his cooldown windows. The matchup is skill-dependent and swings heavily based on whether Urgot lands his E engage.
- Nasus — Riven fights slightly unfavorably against Nasus top (47.76% win rate on LoLalytics). Riven dominates the early levels with aggressive trades, but Nasus's Wither cripples Riven's attack speed and movement speed, neutralizing her combo execution. If Riven does not build a significant lead before Nasus stacks his Q, he outscales her in the sidelane.
#### Unfavorable
- Vayne — Riven loses approximately 56.14% against Vayne top (43.86% win rate on LoLalytics). Vayne's ranged auto-attacks and Condemn knockback punish every engage attempt Riven makes. Vayne can kite Riven during Broken Wings dashes, Tumble away from Ki Burst range, and Condemn Riven into terrain when she dashes in. Silver Bolts true damage ignores Valor's shield and armor from items.
- Wukong — Riven loses approximately 56.04% against Wukong top (43.96% win rate on LoLalytics). Wukong's passive armor scaling and Clone decoy make short trades difficult for Riven — she cannot reliably commit to an all-in because Clone wastes abilities and cooldowns. Wukong's Cyclone knockup in teamfights also outperforms Riven's teamfight contribution.
- Heimerdinger — Riven loses approximately 55.65% against Heimerdinger top (44.35% win rate on LoLalytics). Heimerdinger's turrets zone Riven from CS and punish any engage attempt with focused turret damage. Riven must use Broken Wings to gap-close through turrets, taking significant damage before reaching Heimerdinger, and his E stun grenade stops her combo mid-execution.
- Garen — Riven loses approximately 53.95% against Garen top (46.05% win rate on LoLalytics). Garen's passive health regeneration outsustains Riven's short trades, Decisive Strike's silence prevents Riven from executing her full combo, and Judgment's spin damage combined with armor from Perseverance makes him difficult to burst down. Garen's simplicity counters Riven's complexity — he out-trades by pressing fewer buttons.
- Malphite — Riven loses approximately 53.63% against Malphite top (46.37% win rate on LoLalytics). Malphite's passive shield, armor scaling from Ground Slam, and attack speed slow from Ground Slam neutralize Riven's auto-attack-heavy trading pattern. Malphite stacks armor to make Riven's physical damage negligible, and his Unstoppable Force engage in teamfights is more impactful than anything Riven can contribute from behind.
Recent Patch Changes
Season 2026 — Axiom Arc Meta and Scaling Nerfs
Riven received targeted nerfs in the 2026 season after her discovery of the Axiom Arc build pushed her mid-game burst power too high:
- Patch 26.3 — Runic Blade (Passive) AD ratio reduced from 30% – 50% (based on level) AD to 30% – 45% (based on level) AD. Broken Wings (Q) bonus AD ratio reduced from 65/70/75/80/85% to 60/65/70/75/80% per cast. These nerfs targeted Riven's late-game burst damage which was deemed too strong following her adoption of Axiom Arc as a first item, reducing her scaling while preserving early-game strength.
Season 2025 — Monster Damage and Knockback Fixes
Riven received quality-of-life changes and bug fixes in the 2025 season:
- Patch 25.23 — Runic Blade (Passive) now deals 50 bonus physical damage to monsters, adding jungle viability to Riven's kit.
- Patch 25.22 — Broken Wings (Q) airborne disable no longer ends abruptly on targets upon their collision with terrain, fixing a long-standing bug where the knockup on Q3 would terminate early against walls.
- Patch 25.14 — Runic Blade (Passive) AD ratio reduced from 30% – 60% (based on level) to 30% – 50% (based on level) with linear scaling. Broken Wings (Q) third cast displacement no longer prematurely ends at walls. These changes reduced Riven's late-game passive damage while fixing terrain-related bugs with her knockup.
