Best Talon Build & Guide (2026) — League of Legends
The definitive Talon build guide for 2026. Optimal items, runes, ability order, playstyle tips, and matchup advice backed by data from thousands of ranked League of Legends matches.
Talon is League of Legends' Blade's Shadow — an AD assassin who vaults over terrain with Assassin's Path to reach targets from unexpected angles, bursts enemies with Noxian Diplomacy's melee critical strike, rakes blades outward and back with Rake for ranged waveclear and slowing poke, stacks Blade's End's Wound passive for devastating bleed damage, and vanishes into stealth with Shadow Assault's converging ring of blades to execute priority targets before they can react. He is a melee assassin who builds lethality items like Youmuu's Ghostblade and Hubris to become a roaming one-shot threat with unmatched terrain mobility. Talon is played as a mid laner (52.15% win rate on LoLalytics Patch 16.6 Emerald+, A Tier ranked approximately 20th of 93 mid lane champions) with a 2.03% pick rate, and as a jungler (50.77% win rate, B+ Tier ranked approximately 35th of 75 jungle champions) with a 3.78% pick rate. Whether you want to roam across the map by vaulting terrain that no other champion can cross, one-shot squishy carries with a melee Q critical strike into passive bleed, or disappear with Shadow Assault to reposition for the perfect assassination, this guide covers everything you need to master the Blade's Shadow in 2026.
Talon Overview
Talon operates as a roaming AD assassin whose power comes from Blade's End's passive bleed that deals massive physical damage over 2 seconds when consuming three Wound stacks with a basic attack, Noxian Diplomacy's melee-range critical strike that deals 150% damage and applies a Wound stack for burst trades and kills, Rake's outgoing and returning blade fan that applies two Wound stacks and slows enemies hit by the return for ranged poke and waveclear, Assassin's Path's terrain vaulting that lets Talon cross any wall on the map for flanks and roams that no other champion can replicate, and Shadow Assault's ring of converging blades that grants invisibility and movement speed for repositioning into lethal melee range. He is played as a mid laner (52.15% win rate on LoLalytics Emerald+, A Tier ranked approximately 20th of 93 mid lane champions) with a 2.03% pick rate and as a jungler (50.77% win rate, B+ Tier ranked approximately 35th of 75 jungle champions) with a 3.78% pick rate.
Unlike traditional assassins who rely on a single gap-closer dash, Talon provides unmatched terrain mobility through Assassin's Path's ability to vault any wall on the map with a per-wall cooldown of 160-60 seconds, allowing him to path through jungle terrain, flank through unexpected angles, and escape over walls that would trap any other champion; devastating burst damage through the Blade's End passive bleed that deals 80-303.53 (+210% bonus AD) physical damage over 2 seconds when consuming three Wound stacks — which Rake's two passes plus a Noxian Diplomacy strike stack instantly; reliable waveclear and poke through Rake's outgoing and returning blade fan dealing a combined 110-270 (+130% bonus AD) physical damage with a 40-60% slow on the return; and stealth-based assassination through Shadow Assault's 2.5 seconds of invisibility with 40-70% movement speed that lets Talon reposition into melee range for the killing blow. Talon wins by shoving mid lane with Rake, roaming through terrain with Assassin's Path to assassinate side laners before they can react, and using Shadow Assault's stealth to execute carries in teamfights.
Blade's End (Passive) causes Talon's abilities to apply Wound stacks to enemy champions and large monsters, stacking up to 3 times with a 6-second duration. When Talon basic attacks a target with 3 Wound stacks, he consumes them to inflict a bleed that deals 80-303.53 (based on level 1-18) (+210% bonus AD) total physical damage over 2 seconds. The bleed ticks every 0.125 seconds for consistent damage. Both passes of Rake and both passes of Shadow Assault each apply one Wound stack, meaning W alone applies 2 stacks and R alone applies 2 stacks. Blade's End deals 100% damage to monsters. Blade's End is the core of Talon's burst pattern — landing Rake's two passes applies 2 Wound stacks, and following up with Noxian Diplomacy or a basic attack applies the third stack and immediately consumes them for the bleed, creating a W-auto-Q combo that delivers his full damage in under a second.
Noxian Diplomacy (Q) has an 8/7.5/7/6.5/6-second cooldown and costs 40 mana. Talon stabs the target enemy, dealing 65/85/105/125/145 (+100% bonus AD) physical damage and applying a Wound stack. When cast within melee range (170 units), the attack critically strikes for 150% damage, dealing 97.5/127.5/157.5/187.5/217.5 (+150% bonus AD) physical damage. When cast from range (up to 575 units), Talon dashes to the target and strikes them. If Noxian Diplomacy kills the target, Talon heals for 9-60.41 (based on level) and the cooldown is refunded by 50%. Noxian Diplomacy also resets Talon's basic attack timer and grants 75 bonus attack range for 1 second after melee use. Noxian Diplomacy is Talon's primary execution tool — the melee critical strike at 150% damage provides massive burst when combined with Blade's End stacks, and the ranged dash version enables gap-closing to reach fleeing targets.
Rake (W) has a 9/8.5/8/7.5/7-second cooldown and costs 50/55/60/65/70 mana. Talon throws a fan of blades in a target direction within 900 range, dealing 50/60/70/80/90 (+40% bonus AD) physical damage to enemies hit on the outgoing pass. After a 0.7-second delay, the blades return to Talon, dealing 60/90/120/150/180 (+90% bonus AD) physical damage and slowing enemies hit by 40/45/50/55/60% for 1 second. Each pass applies one Wound stack, for a total of 2 Wound stacks if both passes hit. The combined total damage of both passes is 110/150/190/230/270 (+130% bonus AD) physical damage. Rake is Talon's waveclear and poke ability — the outgoing pass pushes minion waves while the return pass applies a slow that sets up Noxian Diplomacy's melee critical strike, and the two Wound stacks from both passes are essential for quickly activating Blade's End.
Assassin's Path (E) has a 2-second global cooldown between any wall vault and a per-wall cooldown of 160/135/110/85/60 seconds. Assassin's Path costs no mana. Talon vaults over the nearest terrain in the target direction within 725 range, dashing up to 800 units. He gains unobstructed vision during the vault. Talon cannot vault the same piece of terrain again until that terrain's per-wall cooldown expires, indicated by a visual marker on the terrain. Assassin's Path is Talon's signature ability and the reason he has the best roaming potential of any assassin — vaulting over walls allows him to take direct paths through jungle terrain that would require other champions to walk around, arrive at side lanes from angles that laners cannot ward against, and escape pursuits by hopping over multiple walls in succession.
Shadow Assault (R) has a 100/80/60-second cooldown and costs 100 mana. Talon disperses a ring of 12 blades outward within a 550-unit radius, dealing 90/135/180 (+100% bonus AD) physical damage to enemies hit and gaining invisibility for up to 2.5 seconds with 40/55/70% bonus movement speed. The blades converge back to Talon's location after the stealth ends or when he breaks stealth by attacking or casting an ability, dealing 90/135/180 (+100% bonus AD) physical damage on convergence. The total damage from both passes is 180/270/360 (+200% bonus AD) physical damage. If Talon breaks stealth with a basic attack or Noxian Diplomacy, the blades converge on the attack target's location instead. Each pass of Shadow Assault applies one Wound stack. Shadow Assault is Talon's assassination and teamfight ultimate — the invisibility and movement speed allow him to reposition into melee range of priority targets, and the converging blades combined with Blade's End stacks create devastating burst damage that can one-shot squishy carries.
Strengths
- Assassin's Path's terrain vaulting lets Talon cross any wall on the map with a 2-second global cooldown between vaults, giving him roaming speed and pathing flexibility that no other champion can match — he can path directly through jungle walls, arrive at side lanes from unwarded angles, escape over multiple walls in succession, and reach objectives faster than enemies who must walk around terrain — This unique terrain mobility makes Talon the premier roaming mid laner who generates advantages by killing side laners before they can react to his missing ping
- Blade's End's passive bleed deals 80-303.53 (+210% bonus AD) physical damage over 2 seconds when consuming 3 Wound stacks, and Rake's two passes apply 2 Wound stacks instantly, meaning a single W into melee auto-Q combo applies all 3 stacks and triggers the full bleed for burst damage that can one-shot squishy champions from level 3 onward when combined with Ignite — The 210% bonus AD ratio on the bleed means Talon's burst scales explosively with lethality items, making each completed item a significant power spike
- Shadow Assault's 2.5 seconds of invisibility with 40-70% bonus movement speed allows Talon to reposition in teamfights, dodge incoming crowd control during engages, and close the distance to priority targets from stealth — the converging blades deal 180-360 (+200% bonus AD) total damage while also applying 2 Wound stacks for an immediate Blade's End proc with a single auto attack — The low 60-second cooldown at rank 3 means Shadow Assault is available for nearly every skirmish and teamfight
- Noxian Diplomacy's melee critical strike at 150% damage combined with its attack timer reset creates a burst sequence that delivers auto-Q-auto in rapid succession for 3 quick physical damage instances plus a Wound stack, and the 50% cooldown refund on kill with healing ensures Talon can chain kills in teamfights without running out of resources — The ranged dash variant at 575 range also serves as a reliable gap-closer against targets attempting to flee
Weaknesses
- Talon has no defensive abilities, shields, or crowd control immunity — once he commits to an assassination with Shadow Assault's stealth, any crowd control that interrupts his approach leaves him in melee range of the enemy team without an escape, making him extremely reliant on timing and target selection to avoid dying after his burst rotation — His 42.68% win rate against Irelia mid demonstrates how champions with sustained damage and crowd control punish his all-in commitment
- Assassin's Path's per-wall cooldown of 160-60 seconds means each piece of terrain can only be vaulted once before a lengthy cooldown, and the visual marker left on used terrain alerts enemies to which walls Talon has already crossed — in extended chases or repeated gank attempts on the same lane, his escape routes become progressively limited as more walls go on cooldown — Enemy junglers who track Talon's wall cooldowns can predict his pathing and collapse on him during return roams
- Rake's outgoing pass deals only 50-90 (+40% bonus AD) damage, making Talon's waveclear relatively weak compared to mages until he builds enough AD for the return pass to one-shot caster minions — this forces Talon to use multiple Rake casts or spend time auto-attacking minions to shove waves before roaming, giving opponents time to ping missing and warn their team — Against champions with instant waveclear like Syndra or Orianna, Talon struggles to achieve priority for roaming
- Talon's entire burst pattern requires melee range to maximize damage — Noxian Diplomacy's critical strike only triggers within 170 units, and Blade's End requires a basic attack to consume Wound stacks — making him extremely vulnerable to champions who can kite, peel, or disengage before he reaches melee range — His unfavorable matchup against Lissandra (45.72% WR) shows how point-and-click crowd control and self-peel completely shut down his approach
Recommended Runes
Mid Lane: Electrocute (Domination) — Most Popular
The recommended rune page for Talon mid is Electrocute in the Domination tree. Electrocute synergizes perfectly with Talon's burst pattern — Rake's two passes plus a Noxian Diplomacy strike deliver three separate damage instances within the proc window, adding bonus burst damage that pushes his all-in over the kill threshold.
- Electrocute — Deals bonus adaptive damage after hitting an enemy champion with 3 separate attacks or abilities within 3 seconds. Electrocute is the optimal keystone for Talon mid because his standard W-auto-Q combo naturally proc it with three separate damage instances, and the bonus burst damage is critical for one-shotting targets during roams and lane all-ins where every point of damage matters.
- Sudden Impact — Grants lethality and magic penetration for 5 seconds after dashing or exiting stealth. Sudden Impact activates on every Noxian Diplomacy dash, every Assassin's Path wall vault, and every Shadow Assault stealth break — since Talon's assassination pattern always involves at least one of these triggers, the bonus lethality amplifies his burst damage on every kill attempt.
- Eyeball Collection — Grants permanent adaptive force on champion takedowns, stacking up to 10 times. Eyeball Collection provides scaling AD that compounds with Talon's roaming playstyle — as he roams and collects kills across the map, the stacking AD amplifies his burst damage progressively.
- Treasure Hunter — Grants bonus gold on unique champion takedowns. Treasure Hunter accelerates Talon's item spikes — the bonus gold from killing unique champions during roams helps him reach Youmuu's Ghostblade and Umbral Glaive faster, which are critical for his snowball-dependent playstyle.
Secondary — Inspiration
- Magical Footwear — Grants free Slightly Magical Boots at 12 minutes (reduced by takedowns). Magical Footwear saves 300 gold that can be redirected toward Talon's first lethality item, and the enhanced boots provide additional movement speed that amplifies his roaming speed between lanes.
- Cosmic Insight — Grants bonus summoner spell haste and item haste. Cosmic Insight reduces Flash and Ignite cooldowns for more frequent all-in opportunities and provides item haste for faster Youmuu's Ghostblade active cooldowns — both of which are critical for an assassin who relies on summoner spell windows and item actives to secure kills.
Jungle: Conqueror (Precision) — Most Popular
The recommended rune page for Talon jungle is Conqueror in the Precision tree. Conqueror provides sustained damage that Talon needs for extended jungle skirmishes and objective fights where Electrocute's single burst is insufficient.
- Conqueror — Grants stacking adaptive force on attacks and abilities against champions, with bonus healing at max stacks. Conqueror is optimal for Talon jungle because his multi-hit combo (W two passes + auto + Q + passive bleed ticks) stacks Conqueror rapidly, and the sustained AD bonus is more valuable in jungle duels, scuttle contests, and extended 2v2 skirmishes than Electrocute's single burst window.
- Triumph — Restores health and grants bonus gold on champion takedowns. Triumph provides critical sustain during chain-kill scenarios — when Talon dives into the enemy backline with Shadow Assault, the health restoration on each kill keeps him alive long enough to reach the next target.
- Legend: Alacrity — Grants bonus attack speed that increases with champion takedowns. Legend: Alacrity accelerates Talon's jungle clear speed and improves his auto-attack weaving during combos — the bonus attack speed makes his auto-Q-auto sequence smoother and speeds up camp clears between ganks.
- Coup de Grace — Deals bonus damage to enemies below 40% health. Coup de Grace amplifies Talon's execution damage on low-health targets — since his burst combo frequently leaves enemies near the kill threshold, the bonus damage on wounded targets secures kills that would otherwise escape.
Secondary — Domination
- Sudden Impact — Grants lethality after dashing or exiting stealth. Sudden Impact activates on Noxian Diplomacy dashes, Assassin's Path vaults, and Shadow Assault stealth breaks — the bonus lethality amplifies every gank and assassination attempt from the jungle.
- Treasure Hunter — Grants bonus gold on unique champion takedowns. Treasure Hunter accelerates Talon's jungle item progression by rewarding successful ganks across multiple lanes with bonus gold toward his lethality item spikes.
Stat Shards
- Adaptive Force (AD) — Bonus AD increases all of Talon's damage ratios, amplifying Noxian Diplomacy's 100-150% bonus AD scaling, Rake's 130% combined bonus AD ratio, Blade's End's massive 210% bonus AD bleed, and Shadow Assault's 200% total bonus AD ratio.
- Adaptive Force (AD) — Second AD shard maximizes early damage for level 2-3 all-ins and first gank attempts where the additional burst can mean the difference between a kill and the enemy surviving.
- Armor / Health Scaling — Armor is taken against AD mid laners and for jungle clears where physical damage from camps is constant, while Health Scaling is taken against AP mid laners for increasing durability throughout the game.
Recommended Item Build
Based on data from ranked Talon matches tracked across multiple stat sites on Patch 16.6, the Youmuu's Ghostblade into Boots of Swiftness build has the highest win rates for mid lane, while Hubris into Umbral Glaive is strongest for jungle. Here are the optimal build paths.
Standard Build (Mid Lane)
#### Early Game (0-10 min)
- Doran's Blade — Grants attack damage, health, and omnivamp. Doran's Blade is the standard starting item for Talon mid (52.72% WR) because the AD amplifies early Rake and Noxian Diplomacy damage, the health provides survivability during level 2-3 all-ins, and the omnivamp provides sustain through trades and minion last-hitting.
- Health Potion — Provides sustain during laning trades where Talon absorbs poke damage while positioning for Rake into melee Q combos.
#### Core Build (10-20 min)
- Youmuu's Ghostblade — Grants attack damage, lethality, and an active that provides bonus movement speed. Youmuu's Ghostblade is Talon's ideal first completed item in mid because the lethality amplifies his burst against squishy targets, the AD scales with all of his ratios including Blade's End's 210% bonus AD bleed, and the active movement speed combined with Assassin's Path makes his roams arrive faster and more unpredictably than any other assassin.
- Boots of Swiftness — Grants enhanced movement speed and slow resistance. Boots of Swiftness are the optimal boots for Talon mid because the enhanced movement speed amplifies his roaming between lanes through terrain, and the slow resistance helps him reach melee range through crowd control to land Noxian Diplomacy's critical strike.
- Umbral Glaive — Grants attack damage, lethality, and a passive that reveals and executes nearby wards. Umbral Glaive (58.06% WR) provides lethality for burst damage and the ward-clearing passive eliminates enemy vision around the map, making Talon's roams through terrain undetectable — without wards to spot his Assassin's Path vaults, enemies have no warning before he arrives.
#### Late Game (25+ min)
- Edge of Night — Grants attack damage, lethality, and a passive spell shield that blocks the first enemy ability. Edge of Night (58.22% WR) provides a spell shield that protects Talon from the single crowd control ability that would otherwise interrupt his assassination — the shield absorbs the Lux binding, Morgana snare, or Leona stun that enemies rely on to stop his approach.
- Sundered Sky — Grants attack damage, health, and a passive that empowers the first attack against champions with bonus damage and healing. Sundered Sky (58.77% WR) provides burst amplification on Talon's opening attack and critical healing that sustains him through teamfight assassinations — the bonus damage on first hit combines with Noxian Diplomacy's critical strike for devastating opening burst.
- Serylda's Grudge — Grants attack damage, ability haste, and armor penetration with a passive slow on abilities. Serylda's Grudge provides the armor penetration Talon needs against teams building armor to counter his lethality stacking, and the slow on Rake makes it significantly easier to follow up with melee Noxian Diplomacy.
Standard Build (Jungle)
#### Early Game (0-10 min)
- Scorchclaw Pup — Grants attack damage and burn damage on abilities, with empowered clears and ganks. Scorchclaw Pup (53.38% WR) is the standard jungle starting pet for Talon because the burn damage amplifies his AOE clear with Rake and the empowered gank passive adds a slow that helps him close the distance for Noxian Diplomacy's melee critical strike.
- Health Potions — Provide sustain during early jungle clears where Talon takes damage from camps before establishing efficient clear patterns with Rake.
#### Core Build (10-20 min)
- Hubris — Grants attack damage and lethality, with a passive that grants bonus AD on champion kills. Hubris is Talon's ideal first completed item in jungle because the snowball passive rewards his gank-heavy playstyle — each kill grants stacking AD that amplifies subsequent assassination attempts, and the reduced 2800 gold cost lets him reach this spike 1-2 waves earlier than other lethality options.
- Ionian Boots of Lucidity — Grants movement speed and ability haste. Ionian Boots of Lucidity provide the ability haste Talon needs to reduce Rake's and Noxian Diplomacy's cooldowns for faster combo rotations during clears and ganks, and the summoner spell haste reduces Flash and Smite cooldowns for more frequent plays.
- Umbral Glaive — Grants attack damage, lethality, and the ward-clearing passive. Umbral Glaive denies enemy vision across the jungle and river, making Talon's Assassin's Path ganks through terrain completely undetectable and his objective control around Dragon and Rift Herald superior through vision denial.
#### Late Game (25+ min)
- Axiom Arc — Grants attack damage, lethality, and a passive that refunds ultimate cooldown on champion takedowns. Axiom Arc enables Talon to chain Shadow Assault in teamfights — each kill partially refunds the ultimate cooldown, allowing him to stealth and reposition for the next target in rapid succession.
- Edge of Night — Grants attack damage, lethality, and a spell shield. Edge of Night protects Talon's dive with a spell shield that absorbs the first ability that would interrupt his assassination, allowing him to reach backline targets through single-target crowd control.
- Death's Dance — Grants attack damage, ability haste, and a passive that converts damage taken into a bleed and cleanses on kill. Death's Dance (60.37% WR) provides critical survivability for Talon in the late game — the damage conversion gives him time to complete his burst rotation before dying, and the cleanse on kill removes the stored damage, enabling chain kills in teamfights.
Highest Win Rate 3-Item Combinations
The highest win rate mid lane build is Youmuu's Ghostblade + Boots of Swiftness + Umbral Glaive (58.06% WR), which provides the optimal balance of burst damage through stacked lethality, roaming speed through Youmuu's active and enhanced boot movement speed, and vision denial through Umbral Glaive's ward-clearing passive. This build maximizes Talon's identity as a roaming assassin who eliminates side laners before returning to mid. For jungle, the highest win rate build is Hubris + Ionian Boots of Lucidity + Umbral Glaive, which provides snowball potential through Hubris's kill-stacking AD, ability haste for faster combo rotations, and vision denial for undetectable ganks.
Ability Priority
Both Roles: W > Q > E (R at 6, 11, 16)
- Rake (W) — Max first. Each rank increases outgoing damage from 50 to 90 (+40% bonus AD), return damage from 60 to 180 (+90% bonus AD), combined total from 110 to 270 (+130% bonus AD), return slow from 40% to 60%, reduces cooldown from 9 to 7 seconds, while mana cost increases from 50 to 70. W max provides the largest damage increase per rank and is essential for waveclear — higher ranks allow Rake's return pass to one-shot caster minions earlier, enabling Talon to shove waves and roam. The increased slow on the return pass also makes it easier to follow up with melee Noxian Diplomacy.
- Noxian Diplomacy (Q) — Max second. Each rank increases base damage from 65 to 145 (+100% bonus AD) and melee critical strike damage from 97.5 to 217.5 (+150% bonus AD), reduces cooldown from 8 to 6 seconds, and increases kill heal from 9 to 60.41. Q max second provides the largest single-target burst increase — since Noxian Diplomacy's melee critical strike is Talon's primary execution tool, maximizing its damage and cooldown directly increases his kill potential.
- Assassin's Path (E) — Max last. Each rank reduces per-wall cooldown from 160 to 60 seconds, while the 2-second global cooldown and mana-free cost remain constant. E is maxed last because it provides no damage — the ability's value comes from terrain traversal, and while the per-wall cooldown reduction is significant (160 seconds to 60 seconds), Q and W's damage scaling provides more immediate power during the early and mid game.
- Shadow Assault (R) — Level at 6, 11, and 16. Each rank increases damage per pass from 90 to 180 (+100% bonus AD), total damage from 180 to 360 (+200% bonus AD), movement speed bonus from 40% to 70%, and reduces cooldown from 100 to 60 seconds. Level 6 Shadow Assault provides an immediate assassination power spike — the invisibility and converging blades create kill potential that Talon lacks without his ultimate.
Level-by-level order: W, Q, E, W, W, R, W, Q, W, Q, R, Q, Q, E, E, R, E, E.
Summoner Spells
Mid Lane
- Flash — Flash is essential on Talon for Flash-Q melee critical strikes that catch enemies at unexpected range, Flash over terrain when Assassin's Path walls are on cooldown, and escaping situations where wall vaulting is unavailable. Flash is non-negotiable on Talon since Noxian Diplomacy's melee critical strike requires being within 170 units, and Flash provides the instant repositioning to guarantee melee range. Taken in every game.
- Ignite — Ignite is the standard secondary spell for Talon mid (52.15% WR), providing the additional burst damage needed to secure kills during his all-in combo. Ignite's grievous wounds also reduce enemy healing during Blade's End's 2-second bleed, preventing targets from healing through the damage. Taken in every game for kill pressure.
Jungle
- Flash — Essential for the same reasons as mid — Flash-Q engages, repositioning, and escape when walls are on cooldown. Taken in every game.
- Smite — Required for jungle role. Smite secures objectives and enables jungle item completion. Taken in every jungle game.
Playstyle Tips
Early Game / Laning Phase (0-14 min)
Talon's early game varies between mid lane and jungle. In mid lane, his focus is on shoving waves with Rake to generate mid priority, then roaming through terrain with Assassin's Path to assassinate side laners.
Mid lane start: Begin with Rake (W) at level 1 for ranged waveclear and poke. Use W to push the first wave while harassing the enemy laner with the return pass. Take Noxian Diplomacy (Q) at level 2 for the all-in combo — if Rake's return pass slows the enemy, immediately Q into melee range for the critical strike, auto-attack to proc Blade's End's bleed, and Ignite for first blood potential. Take Assassin's Path (E) at level 3 to unlock roaming. The level 2-3 all-in is Talon's strongest laning window — his burst combo with Ignite deals more damage than most champions can survive at these levels.
Roaming: After level 3, Talon's priority shifts from laning to roaming. The standard roaming pattern is shove the wave with Rake → vault over mid lane terrain with Assassin's Path → path through jungle walls directly to bot or top lane → approach from an unwarded angle → W-auto-Q combo with Ignite for the kill → vault back over terrain to return to mid lane. The key to effective roaming is wave management — never roam when a large minion wave is crashing into your tower, as the lost gold and experience outweigh most kills.
Jungle start: Begin with Rake (W) at level 1 for AOE camp clearing. Take Noxian Diplomacy (Q) at level 2 for single-target damage and the heal on kill for sustain. Take Assassin's Path (E) at level 3 to unlock wall-vaulting ganks. Clear camps with W for AOE damage followed by auto attacks to proc Blade's End on large monsters. Talon's first gank opportunity comes at level 3 — vault over the nearest wall into a lane, W the enemy from behind, auto-attack to proc the third Wound stack for bleed, and Q for the melee critical strike.
Mid Game & Teamfights (14-25 min)
Mid-game Talon with Youmuu's Ghostblade or Hubris completed is a lethal roaming assassin who one-shots squishy targets with his burst combo and controls the map through terrain mobility and vision denial.
Talon's mid-game strategy revolves around splitting the map — push a side wave with Rake, vault through terrain to the opposite side of the map with Assassin's Path, and look for picks on isolated enemies. With Umbral Glaive clearing enemy wards, opponents have no vision to track Talon's movement through the jungle, making his flanks unpredictable and lethal.
In teamfights, Talon should never engage first. Wait for the enemy team to use their key crowd control abilities on your frontline, then activate Shadow Assault for invisibility and movement speed, reposition behind the enemy backline, and break stealth with auto-Q on the enemy carry for a one-shot combo: R blades converge on the target for 2 Wound stacks, auto attack procs Blade's End bleed, and Q provides the critical strike finish. If the target survives, Flash-Q provides a second melee critical strike. Never commit Shadow Assault if the enemy team has multiple forms of crowd control available — wait for the frontline to absorb them first.
Late Game (25+ min)
Late-game Talon with full lethality items is a one-shot assassin whose burst combo instantly eliminates any squishy champion, but whose effectiveness depends entirely on finding the right angle and timing to reach priority targets without being crowd controlled.
In the late game, Talon's burst damage with full items is lethal — a W-auto-Q combo with Blade's End bleed and Electrocute proc kills any ADC or mage from full health. The key to late-game success is patience and flanking. Use Assassin's Path to vault over walls behind the enemy team, wait for their crowd control to be used on your frontline, then Shadow Assault into the backline for the assassination.
Around Baron and Elder Dragon, Talon's value shifts from assassination to objective control through vision denial. Umbral Glaive clears enemy wards around the pit, Assassin's Path allows Talon to patrol multiple angles by vaulting jungle walls, and Shadow Assault provides a stealth approach for Smite steals or backline assassinations during the fight.
Edge of Night's spell shield becomes increasingly important in the late game as enemy supports and mages hold their crowd control specifically for Talon. The spell shield absorbs the first ability that would interrupt his approach, giving him the window needed to complete his burst rotation on the target.
Matchups
Mid Lane
#### Favorable
- Ryze — Talon wins against Ryze (~56.91% WR). Ryze's short-range spell rotation requires him to stand within Talon's all-in range, and his lack of mobility before purchasing Phase Rush means Talon's level 2-3 W-Q-Ignite combo kills him before he can respond. Talon's roaming with Assassin's Path also outpaces Ryze's side lane impact through early and mid game.
- Xerath — Talon wins against Xerath (~56.81% WR). Xerath's immobility and reliance on long-range skillshots makes him a free kill once Talon reaches melee range. Assassin's Path lets Talon approach from terrain angles that Xerath cannot ward, and a single W-auto-Q combo chunks Xerath to kill range through his low base health pool.
- Naafiri — Talon wins against Naafiri (~56.23% WR). Talon's superior burst damage and terrain mobility give him the advantage in assassin-versus-assassin matchups. Naafiri's packmates are fragile against Rake's AOE, and Talon's Assassin's Path roaming outpaces Naafiri's wall dash.
#### Even
- Viktor — Talon fights approximately even against Viktor (~50.08% WR). Viktor's Gravity Field can zone Talon away from melee range, and his waveclear matches Talon's Rake priority. The matchup depends on whether Talon can avoid Gravity Field and land his full burst before Viktor's shield and augmented abilities turn the trade.
- Kassadin — Talon fights approximately even against Kassadin (~49.85% WR). Talon dominates the early levels with superior burst damage and roaming, but Kassadin's post-level-6 Riftwalk provides mobility to dodge Rake and escape all-ins. If Talon doesn't snowball before Kassadin reaches item spikes, Kassadin outscales in the late game.
#### Unfavorable
- Irelia — Talon loses to Irelia (~42.68% WR). Irelia's Bladesurge dash resets and Defiant Dance damage reduction allow her to sustain through Talon's burst combo, and her auto-attack based sustained damage overwhelms him in extended trades. Irelia's ability to fight at melee range — where Talon wants to be — negates his burst advantage because she outdamages him when the combo is done.
- Lissandra — Talon loses to Lissandra (~45.72% WR). Lissandra's Ring of Frost is a point-and-click root that stops Talon's approach cold, and her Frozen Tomb self-cast provides invulnerability that negates his entire burst combo. Lissandra can also match Talon's roaming with Glacial Path and provides more teamfight crowd control.
- Aurelion Sol — Talon loses to Aurelion Sol (~46.48% WR). Aurelion Sol's stacking mechanic and long-range abilities allow him to farm safely outside Talon's kill range, and his Flight ability provides escape from Talon's all-in. Aurelion Sol outscales Talon significantly and his massive AOE damage in teamfights provides more value than Talon's single-target assassination.
Jungle
#### Favorable
- Shen — Talon wins against Shen (~57.46% WR). Shen's tank-focused kit and lack of burst damage cannot threaten Talon during invades, and Talon's lethality itemization shreds Shen's health pool before Spirit's Refuge can block enough auto attacks. Talon's roaming speed with Assassin's Path also outpaces Shen's Stand United ultimate for map impact.
- Qiyana — Talon wins against Qiyana (~55.91% WR). Talon's terrain mobility with Assassin's Path gives him superior pathing through the jungle compared to Qiyana's single dash, and his burst combo with Blade's End bleed outdamages Qiyana's ability rotation in 1v1 skirmishes around scuttle and buffs.
- Amumu — Talon wins against Amumu (~55.68% WR). Amumu's slow clear speed and vulnerable early game makes him a target for Talon's invades, and his low damage output cannot contest Talon at scuttle crab or in river skirmishes. Talon's lethality burst also overwhelms Amumu before he can stack enough armor and health to survive.
#### Unfavorable
- Bel'Veth — Talon loses to Bel'Veth (~44.29% WR). Bel'Veth's infinite attack speed scaling and sustained DPS overwhelm Talon in extended jungle fights, and her Void Surge dashes make it difficult to land Rake's return pass consistently. Bel'Veth also outscales Talon dramatically with her attack speed stacking.
- Fiddlesticks — Talon loses to Fiddlesticks (~44.54% WR). Fiddlesticks' Crowstorm provides massive AOE damage that kills Talon during his melee-range burst attempt, and Terrify's fear interrupts his combo. Fiddlesticks' drain sustain also outheals Talon's burst in duels, and his Effigies provide vision that tracks Talon's roaming paths.
- Volibear — Talon loses to Volibear (~44.79% WR). Volibear's Thundering Smash stun and sustained damage with Frenzied Maul overwhelm Talon in jungle skirmishes, and his Stormbringer ultimate provides a turret-diving engage that Talon cannot escape from. Volibear's innate tankiness with Lightning Claws healing means Talon's burst is insufficient to kill him through his sustained combat power.
Recent Patch Changes
Talon's current state in Patch 16.6 reflects a premier AD assassin with a clear strength in roaming and single-target burst — he thrives in mid lane (52.15% win rate, A Tier ranked approximately 20th of 93 mid champions) where Rake's waveclear creates priority for Assassin's Path roams through terrain, and performs solidly as a jungler (50.77% win rate, B+ Tier ranked approximately 35th of 75 jungle champions) where his wall-vaulting ganks arrive from angles that enemies cannot ward.
His most recent direct change was in Patch 25.22, which reduced Blade's End's monster damage from 110% to 100%, targeting his jungle clearing efficiency without affecting his mid lane performance. The Patch 26.5 reduction of Hubris to 2800 gold served as an indirect buff to jungle Talon by letting him reach his snowball spike 1-2 waves earlier. His kit's strength lies in Blade's End's 210% bonus AD bleed that scales explosively with lethality, Noxian Diplomacy's 150% melee critical strike for devastating burst, Rake's reliable waveclear and double Wound stack application, Assassin's Path's unmatched terrain traversal for roaming and flanking, and Shadow Assault's stealth repositioning for backline assassinations — making him particularly strong in solo queue where his roaming and pick potential thrive in uncoordinated environments. The statistically dominant Youmuu's Ghostblade into Boots of Swiftness into Umbral Glaive mid lane build provides the perfect blend of burst damage through stacked lethality, roaming speed through movement speed bonuses, and vision denial through ward-clearing that unlock Talon's full potential as a map-controlling assassin in League of Legends.
