Best Tryndamere Build & Guide (2026) — League of Legends
The definitive Tryndamere build guide for 2026. Optimal items, runes, ability order, playstyle tips, and matchup advice backed by data from thousands of ranked League of Legends matches.
Tryndamere is League of Legends' Barbarian King — a crit-based melee carry who builds Fury through basic attacks to fuel his passive critical strike chance from Battle Fury that scales with missing health, sustains through fights with Bloodlust's active heal that consumes all accumulated Fury and passive bonus attack damage that increases as his health drops, cripples enemy fighters with Mocking Shout's attack damage reduction and movement speed slow on enemies running away, dashes through enemies with Spinning Slash's physical damage spin that has its cooldown reduced by critical strikes, and refuses to die with Undying Rage's ultimate that makes him immune to death for 5 seconds while gaining instant Fury. He is a fighter who builds Essence Reaver and Infinity Edge to maximize his critical strike damage and split-push pressure. Tryndamere is played as a top laner (51.8% win rate on Patch 16.6 Emerald+, B Tier) and mid laner (50.7% win rate, C Tier) with a 2.9% combined pick rate and a 2.1% ban rate. Whether you want to split push towers into rubble with unstoppable crit-fueled auto attacks, dive the enemy backline with Spinning Slash while Undying Rage keeps you alive through lethal burst damage, or dominate 1v1 duels with Mocking Shout's AD reduction and Bloodlust's low-health sustain, this guide covers everything you need to master the Barbarian King in 2026.
Tryndamere Overview
Tryndamere operates as a crit-based melee carry and split-push specialist whose power comes from Battle Fury's passive critical strike chance that increases as his health drops — granting up to 50% crit chance at level 18 when near death, Bloodlust's passive bonus attack damage that scales with missing health and reaches full value at 10% remaining HP — synergizing perfectly with Undying Rage's unkillable threshold, Mocking Shout's attack damage reduction of up to 120 AD on nearby enemies combined with an 80% movement speed slow on enemies moving away for 3.25 seconds, Spinning Slash's dash through enemies dealing physical damage that has its cooldown reduced by 0.75 seconds on critical strike (1.5 seconds against champions) for near-constant mobility in fights, and Undying Rage's 5-second death immunity that cannot be reduced below 30/50/70 health while instantly granting Fury that fuels his crit chance and Bloodlust heal. He is played as a top laner (51.8% win rate on Patch 16.6 Emerald+) and mid laner (50.7% win rate) with a combined 2.9% pick rate.
Unlike tanks who rely on crowd control or mages who rely on ability rotations, Tryndamere wins fights through raw auto-attack damage amplified by critical strikes — Battle Fury's passive grants free critical strike chance based on missing health that can reach 50% without any items at level 18, making every auto attack a potential crit that deals devastating damage; Bloodlust's passive grants up to 72 bonus AD at max rank when near 10% health, and since Undying Rage keeps Tryndamere alive at that exact threshold, he gains maximum bonus AD during the 5-second window where he is unkillable; Spinning Slash's cooldown is reduced by every critical strike, meaning that in teamfights with high crit chance, Tryndamere can dash every 1-2 seconds to chase targets across the entire fight; and Mocking Shout strips up to 120 AD from nearby enemies while slowing those who run away by 80%, simultaneously weakening enemies and preventing them from escaping. Tryndamere wins by split pushing with relentless auto-attack damage that destroys towers, diving carries with Spinning Slash while Undying Rage makes him unkillable, and stat-checking melee fighters with Mocking Shout's AD reduction and Bloodlust's low-health bonus AD.
Battle Fury (Passive) grants Tryndamere 5 Fury per basic attack and 10 Fury per critical strike, up to a maximum of 100 Fury. Tryndamere's critical strike chance increases based on his missing health by 0.3 / 0.4 / 0.5% (based on level) per 1% of missing health. Battle Fury is Tryndamere's core mechanic that defines his entire playstyle — the Fury generation fuels Bloodlust's active heal, while the missing-health crit chance creates a feedback loop where lower health means more crits, more crits mean more Spinning Slash resets, and more dashes mean more opportunities to land auto attacks that generate more Fury for Bloodlust healing.
Bloodlust (Q) has a 12-second cooldown and no cost. Passive: Tryndamere gains bonus attack damage equal to 0.2 / 0.35 / 0.5 / 0.65 / 0.8 per 1% of his missing health, reaching full value at 10% remaining health. Active: Tryndamere consumes all Fury to heal for 30 / 40 / 50 / 60 / 70 (+30% AP) plus 0.5 / 0.95 / 1.4 / 1.85 / 2.3 (+1.2% AP) per Fury consumed. Bloodlust is Tryndamere's sustain and damage steroid — the passive AD bonus at max rank grants up to 72 bonus AD when at 10% health, which Undying Rage guarantees during all-ins, making Tryndamere hit hardest when he should be dead, and the active heal at max rank with 100 Fury restores 300 HP that can stabilize Tryndamere after Undying Rage expires or sustain him through laning trades.
Mocking Shout (W) has a 14-second cooldown and no cost. Tryndamere reduces nearby enemy champions' attack damage by 30 / 52.5 / 75 / 97.5 / 120 for 3.25 seconds, and enemies moving away from Tryndamere are slowed by 50 / 57.5 / 65 / 72.5 / 80% for 3.25 seconds. Mocking Shout is Tryndamere's utility ability that serves dual purposes — the AD reduction cripples enemy auto-attackers in duels by stripping up to 120 AD from their damage output, making melee trades dramatically favor Tryndamere, and the 80% slow at max rank on enemies moving away is one of the strongest slows in the game that prevents targets from kiting Tryndamere once he reaches them with Spinning Slash.
Spinning Slash (E) has a 12 / 11 / 10 / 9 / 8-second cooldown and no cost. Tryndamere dashes to the target location, dealing 80 / 120 / 160 / 200 / 240 (+80% AP) (+100% bonus AD) physical damage to enemies hit and generating 2 Fury per enemy hit, increased to 5 Fury per champion hit. Critical strikes on-hit reduce Spinning Slash's current cooldown by 0.75 seconds, doubled to 1.5 seconds against champions. Spinning Slash is Tryndamere's mobility and waveclear tool — the dash provides the gap-closing that Tryndamere desperately needs to reach ranged targets, the crit-based cooldown reduction means that with high crit chance Tryndamere can dash multiple times per fight to chase down fleeing enemies, and the bonus AD scaling means Spinning Slash deals significant damage when combined with Bloodlust's passive AD bonus at low health.
Undying Rage (R) has a 120 / 110 / 100-second cooldown and no cost. Tryndamere becomes completely immune to death for 5 seconds, refusing to be reduced below 30 / 50 / 70 health and instantly gaining 50 / 75 / 100 Fury. Undying Rage can be cast while affected by cast-inhibiting crowd control. Undying Rage is Tryndamere's signature ability and the reason he can dive turrets, 1v2 ganks, and survive teamfight burst — the 5-second death immunity gives Tryndamere a guaranteed window to deal damage with maximum Bloodlust AD bonus (since he is at minimum health), the instant Fury generation fuels a massive Bloodlust heal after the ultimate expires to survive the aftermath, and the ability to cast during crowd control means that no stun, suppress, or knockup can prevent Tryndamere from activating his ultimate in time.
Strengths
- Undying Rage's 5-second death immunity is one of the most powerful ultimate abilities in the game — no amount of burst damage, ignite ticks, or turret shots can kill Tryndamere during the 5-second window, and since he can cast it during any form of crowd control, there is no reliable way to prevent its activation, meaning Tryndamere can tower dive with impunity, survive ganks that would kill any other champion, and continue dealing maximum damage while at minimum health — The instant Fury gain also fuels a Bloodlust heal after the ultimate expires, giving Tryndamere a chance to survive the aftermath
- Bloodlust's passive bonus AD at low health creates a unique power dynamic where Tryndamere deals the most damage when he is closest to death — at max rank, Tryndamere gains up to 72 bonus AD at 10% health, and since Undying Rage guarantees he stays alive at that threshold, the 5-second unkillable window is also Tryndamere's highest damage window, punishing enemies who think they have already won the fight — Combined with Battle Fury's crit chance scaling from missing health, Tryndamere at low health crits more often and hits harder simultaneously
- Spinning Slash's crit-based cooldown reduction gives Tryndamere exceptional chase potential that scales with his itemization — with 100% crit chance from items, every auto attack reduces Spinning Slash's cooldown by 1.5 seconds against champions, meaning Tryndamere can dash every 2-3 seconds in extended fights to stick to targets who flash, dash, or use movement abilities to escape — The dash also passes through terrain, allowing Tryndamere to escape through walls or chase over jungle walls
- Tryndamere is one of the strongest split-push champions in the game — his high attack speed, critical strike damage, and Spinning Slash waveclear let him push waves and destroy towers faster than most champions, Undying Rage lets him survive any 1v1 or even 1v2 attempts to stop him, and Spinning Slash through walls provides escape routes that most champions cannot follow — Forcing enemies to send multiple players to stop Tryndamere creates a numerical advantage for his team elsewhere on the map
Weaknesses
- Tryndamere has no crowd control outside of Mocking Shout's conditional slow, making him entirely dependent on dealing damage to contribute to fights — if Tryndamere is kited, exhausted, or otherwise unable to auto-attack, he provides zero utility to his team, unlike bruisers and tanks who can crowd control enemies even when behind in damage — Mocking Shout's slow only applies to enemies moving away, meaning it cannot be used to engage or peel for allies
- Tryndamere is extremely vulnerable to crowd control chains that outlast or follow Undying Rage — if enemies stun Tryndamere for 2-3 seconds of his 5-second ultimate, he has almost no time to deal damage before death immunity expires, and champions with point-and-click crowd control like Malzahar's Nether Grasp, Lissandra's Frozen Tomb, or Nautilus's Depth Charge can consistently neutralize his ultimate — Hard CC also prevents Tryndamere from auto-attacking, which means no crits, no Spinning Slash resets, and no Fury generation
- Tryndamere is a purely selfish champion who provides nothing to his team beyond damage — he has no shields, heals, crowd control, or utility for allies, meaning if Tryndamere falls behind in gold or levels, he becomes a liability who cannot tank, cannot peel, and cannot set up plays for teammates — This weakness is especially pronounced in teamfight-heavy games where split pushing is not viable
- Tryndamere's early game is weak against ranged top laners who can harass him before he gains enough Fury and items to fight — without Fury, Tryndamere has no crit chance, minimal sustain from Bloodlust, and Spinning Slash is his only gap-closer on a long cooldown, meaning ranged bullies can zone him from minions and build a lead before Tryndamere reaches his item power spikes — His manaless kit helps with sustain, but the lack of ranged abilities means he cannot trade back against poke
Recommended Runes
Top Lane: Hail of Blades (Domination) — Highest Win Rate
The recommended rune page for Tryndamere Top is Hail of Blades in the Domination tree. Hail of Blades grants three rapid auto attacks at the start of combat, synergizing with Tryndamere's need to land quick crits for Spinning Slash resets and generate Fury for Bloodlust heals.
- Hail of Blades — Grants massively increased attack speed for the first three basic attacks against enemy champions. Hail of Blades is Tryndamere's optimal keystone because the three rapid auto attacks generate Fury quickly, proc Battle Fury's crit chance for immediate Spinning Slash cooldown reduction, and front-load Tryndamere's damage in short trades where he dashes in with Spinning Slash, lands three fast autos, and dashes out before the enemy can retaliate.
- Sudden Impact — Grants bonus lethality and magic penetration after using a dash. Sudden Impact procs on every Spinning Slash, providing bonus armor penetration that amplifies Tryndamere's physical damage during the burst window immediately after dashing into the enemy.
- Grisly Mementos — Grants stacking adaptive force from champion takedowns, with stats shared between nearby allies. Grisly Mementos provides bonus AD that scales as Tryndamere secures kills in split-push duels and skirmishes.
- Treasure Hunter — Grants bonus gold on unique champion takedowns. Treasure Hunter accelerates Tryndamere's item powerspikes by providing extra gold that brings Essence Reaver and Infinity Edge completion sooner, which is critical for a champion whose power scales directly with crit item purchases.
Secondary — Precision
- Legend: Alacrity — Grants stacking attack speed from champion takedowns and minion kills. Legend: Alacrity provides free attack speed that increases Tryndamere's DPS, Fury generation rate, and crit-based Spinning Slash cooldown reduction throughout the game.
- Last Stand — Deals bonus damage when below 60% health. Last Stand is Tryndamere's optimal minor rune because his entire kit revolves around fighting at low health — Undying Rage keeps him alive at minimum health where Last Stand provides maximum bonus damage, stacking with Bloodlust's passive AD bonus for devastating low-health damage output.
Mid Lane: Hail of Blades (Domination) — Most Popular
The recommended rune page for Tryndamere Mid is the same Hail of Blades setup as top lane, optimized for burst trades against squishy mid laners.
- Hail of Blades — Same rationale as Top — burst trades with three rapid auto attacks after Spinning Slash engage. Even more valuable in mid lane where trades are shorter and enemies are squishier.
- Sudden Impact — Same rationale as Top — Spinning Slash procs the bonus lethality for amplified burst damage.
- Grisly Mementos — Same rationale as Top — stacking AD from roam kills across the map.
- Treasure Hunter — Same rationale as Top — bonus gold accelerates the lethality-into-crit build that mid Tryndamere relies on.
Secondary — Precision
- Legend: Alacrity — Same rationale as Top — free attack speed scaling for DPS and Fury generation.
- Last Stand — Same rationale as Top — maximum damage at low health during Undying Rage.
Stat Shards
- Attack Speed — Bonus attack speed improves early laning trades, Fury generation, and crit-based Spinning Slash cooldown reduction.
- Adaptive Force — Bonus attack damage increases auto-attack trading damage and Spinning Slash's bonus AD scaling.
- Health Scaling — Scaling health provides survivability in mid-game skirmishes and teamfights where Tryndamere needs to survive long enough to activate Undying Rage.
Recommended Item Build
Based on data from ranked Tryndamere matches tracked across multiple stat sites on Patch 16.6, the Essence Reaver into Infinity Edge crit build has the highest win rates for Top lane, while a lethality-into-crit build performs best for Mid lane. Here are the optimal build paths.
Top Lane Build
#### Early Game (0-10 min)
- Doran's Blade — Grants attack damage, health, and omnivamp. Doran's Blade is Tryndamere's standard top lane start because the AD improves last-hitting and early trades, the health provides survivability against aggressive laners, and the omnivamp provides sustain that supplements Bloodlust's active heal.
- Health Potion — Provides sustain during early trades where Tryndamere builds Fury through extended auto-attack exchanges.
#### Core Build (10-20 min)
- Essence Reaver — Grants attack damage, critical strike chance, and ability haste, with a Spellblade passive that empowers the next basic attack after using an ability. Essence Reaver is Tryndamere's optimal first item because the Spellblade passive procs on every Spinning Slash for massive empowered auto attacks, the 20% crit chance starts building toward Infinity Edge's threshold, the ability haste reduces Spinning Slash and Bloodlust cooldowns, and the AD amplifies both auto-attack damage and Spinning Slash's bonus AD scaling.
- Berserker's Greaves — Grants bonus attack speed. Berserker's Greaves are Tryndamere's standard boots because attack speed directly increases his DPS, Fury generation rate, and the frequency of critical strikes that reduce Spinning Slash's cooldown — no other boot option provides comparable combat value for a crit-based auto-attacker.
- Infinity Edge — Grants attack damage and critical strike chance, with a passive that increases critical strike damage when the wielder has at least 40% crit chance. Infinity Edge (52.5% WR) is Tryndamere's most important item because it amplifies every critical strike's damage, and since Battle Fury's passive guarantees high crit chance at low health, Infinity Edge's passive is active in virtually every fight — especially during Undying Rage where Tryndamere is at maximum missing health with maximum crit chance.
#### Late Game (25+ min)
- Phantom Dancer — Grants attack speed, critical strike chance, and bonus movement speed. Phantom Dancer provides the attack speed and crit chance that maximizes Tryndamere's DPS and Spinning Slash cooldown reduction, while the movement speed helps him stick to targets in side lanes and teamfights. Part of the highest win rate 3-item combination (55.6% WR with Blade of the Ruined King and Infinity Edge).
- Serylda's Grudge — Grants attack damage, ability haste, and armor penetration, with a passive that slows enemies hit by abilities. Serylda's Grudge turns Spinning Slash into a gap-closing slow that makes it nearly impossible for enemies to escape Tryndamere — the armor penetration shreds through defensive itemization, and the ability haste further reduces Spinning Slash's base cooldown.
- Lord Dominik's Regards — Grants attack damage, critical strike chance, and armor penetration with bonus damage against targets with more maximum health. Lord Dominik's Regards is the optimal late-game option against tank-heavy compositions where armor penetration is needed to cut through Thornmail, Randuin's Omen, and other armor stacking.
Mid Lane Build
#### Early Game (0-10 min)
- Long Sword — Grants attack damage. Long Sword start provides more AD than Doran's Blade for stronger early trades against squishy mid laners, and builds directly into Profane Hydra's components for a faster first item completion.
- Health Potions (x3) — Three health potions provide the sustain needed to survive poke-heavy mid lane matchups where Tryndamere takes damage while farming before he can all-in.
#### Core Build (10-20 min)
- Profane Hydra — Grants attack damage, lethality, and ability haste, with a passive that cleaves nearby enemies on auto attacks. Profane Hydra is Tryndamere Mid's optimal first item because the lethality provides burst damage against squishy mid laners, the cleave passive fixes Tryndamere's waveclear weakness for shoving waves before roaming, and the ability haste reduces Spinning Slash's cooldown for more frequent roam engages.
- Berserker's Greaves — Same rationale as Top — attack speed for DPS, Fury generation, and crit-based Spinning Slash resets.
- The Collector — Grants attack damage, critical strike chance, and lethality, with a passive that executes enemies below 5% health. The Collector bridges the lethality burst build into crit scaling, providing the crit chance needed for Infinity Edge's passive threshold while adding an execute passive that synergizes with Tryndamere's all-in playstyle where enemies are often at low health after Undying Rage trades.
#### Late Game (25+ min)
- Infinity Edge — Same rationale as Top — amplifies critical strike damage for devastating auto attacks during Undying Rage's low-health window.
- Lord Dominik's Regards — Same rationale as Top — armor penetration and crit for cutting through defensive itemization.
- Phantom Dancer — Same rationale as Top — attack speed, crit, and movement speed for maximum DPS and chase potential.
Situational Items
- Blade of the Ruined King — Provides attack damage, attack speed, and lifesteal with a passive that deals percent-current-health damage on auto attacks — ideal as a first item against tanky top laners who stack health early, and part of the highest win rate 3-item combination (55.6% WR with Phantom Dancer and Infinity Edge).
- Ravenous Hydra — Provides attack damage, ability haste, and omnivamp with a passive that cleaves nearby enemies on auto attacks — strong when Tryndamere needs waveclear and sustain in top lane matchups where extended trading is favored over burst.
- Mortal Reminder — Provides attack damage, critical strike chance, and armor penetration with grievous wounds on physical damage — essential against heavy sustain champions like Aatrox, Dr. Mundo, and Soraka where reducing healing is more valuable than raw damage.
- Death's Dance — Provides attack damage, ability haste, and armor with a passive that converts damage taken into a damage-over-time bleed — powerful when Tryndamere needs to survive burst before activating Undying Rage, and the bleed resets on champion takedowns.
Highest Win Rate 3-Item Combinations
The highest win rate Top build is Blade of the Ruined King + Phantom Dancer + Infinity Edge (55.6% WR), which provides sustained DPS through Blade of the Ruined King's percent-health on-hit and Phantom Dancer's attack speed, critical strike amplification through Infinity Edge's passive that transforms every crit into devastating damage, and the movement speed from both Phantom Dancer and Blade of the Ruined King's passive that lets Tryndamere stick to targets. The standard Essence Reaver + Berserker's Greaves + Infinity Edge build offers slightly lower win rate but better Spellblade burst and ability haste for Spinning Slash cycling.
Ability Priority
Top Lane: E > Q > W (R at 6, 11, 16)
- Spinning Slash (E) — Max first. Each rank increases damage from 80 to 240 (+100% bonus AD) and reduces base cooldown from 12 to 8 seconds. E max provides the largest combined increase in waveclear, mobility, and damage per rank — the 4-second base cooldown reduction from rank 1 to rank 5 means Tryndamere can Spinning Slash more frequently for wave manipulation, gap-closing, and escape, and the damage scaling with bonus AD makes each rank more impactful as Tryndamere builds AD items.
- Bloodlust (Q) — Max second. Each rank increases passive bonus AD per 1% missing health from 0.2 to 0.8 and active heal base from 30 to 70 plus per-Fury heal from 0.5 to 2.3. Q max second dramatically increases Tryndamere's dueling power during Undying Rage by quadrupling the passive AD bonus at low health and providing stronger Bloodlust heals for surviving after the ultimate expires.
- Mocking Shout (W) — Max last. Each rank increases AD reduction from 30 to 120 and slow from 50% to 80%. W is maxed last because Mocking Shout's primary value is the slow that prevents enemies from running away, which functions at rank 1, and the AD reduction scaling is less impactful than E's cooldown reduction and Q's AD bonus scaling.
- Undying Rage (R) — Level at 6, 11, and 16. Each rank reduces minimum health threshold from 30 to 70, increases Fury gained from 50 to 100, and reduces cooldown from 120 to 100 seconds. Level 6 Undying Rage is Tryndamere's biggest powerspike, enabling tower dives, 1v1 kills, and aggressive all-ins that define his playstyle.
Level-by-level order (Top): E, Q, W, E, E, R, E, Q, E, Q, R, Q, Q, W, W, R, W, W.
Mid Lane: E > Q > W (R at 6, 11, 16)
Same priority as Top. Spinning Slash max first is even more important in mid lane where the waveclear and mobility are essential for shoving waves and roaming to side lanes.
Level-by-level order (Mid): E, Q, W, E, E, R, E, Q, E, Q, R, Q, Q, W, W, R, W, W.
Summoner Spells
Top Lane
- Flash — Flash is essential on Tryndamere for Flash-Spinning Slash combos that extend his engage range to catch enemies off guard, Flash over walls to escape when Spinning Slash is on cooldown, and repositioning during Undying Rage to reach priority targets or escape after the 5-second window expires. Taken in most games.
- Ignite — Ignite is the standard aggressive secondary spell for Tryndamere Top, providing grievous wounds that reduce enemy healing during all-ins where Bloodlust's sustain advantage would otherwise be partially negated by enemy lifesteal, plus the true damage burn secures kills on targets who flash away from Tryndamere's melee range after Undying Rage expires.
- Ghost — Alternative to Flash for extended chase potential. Ghost provides sustained movement speed that stacks with Mocking Shout's slow for extreme sticking power, and the extended duration is more valuable than Flash's instant repositioning in split-push scenarios where Tryndamere needs to run down multiple enemies over a longer fight. Ghost + Ignite sacrifices Flash's wall-crossing but gains superior chase in open areas.
- Teleport — Alternative for macro-focused play. Teleport allows Tryndamere to split push aggressively and teleport to teamfights when needed, though it sacrifices early kill pressure from Ignite.
Mid Lane
- Flash — Same rationale as Top — Flash-Spinning Slash engage range extension, wall escapes, and Undying Rage repositioning.
- Ignite — Same rationale as Top — kill pressure and grievous wounds. Even more valuable in mid lane where securing early kills against squishy opponents snowballs the game.
Playstyle Tips
Early Game / Laning Phase (0-14 min)
Top Lane: Tryndamere's early top lane focuses on building Fury through auto-attack trades, sustaining with Bloodlust, and looking for level 6 all-ins with Undying Rage.
Start E (Spinning Slash) level 1 for waveclear and the ability to trade or escape ganks. Take Q (Bloodlust) level 2 for sustain through trades. Take W (Mocking Shout) level 3 to unlock the full trading combo. Tryndamere's level 1-5 is about building Fury through auto-attacking the wave and trading with the enemy laner when Fury is high — high Fury means higher crit chance from Battle Fury, which means more damage in trades and more Spinning Slash cooldown reductions.
The fundamental Tryndamere trading pattern is: build Fury to 50+ by auto-attacking minions, Spinning Slash onto the enemy, land 2-3 auto attacks with Hail of Blades (hoping for crits), activate Mocking Shout to slow their retreat and reduce their AD, then Spinning Slash out if the trade is unfavorable or continue chasing if you are winning. Always keep Fury high before engaging — trading with zero Fury means zero bonus crit chance and zero heal available from Bloodlust.
At level 6, Tryndamere's all-in power spikes massively. Undying Rage guarantees 5 seconds of free damage at maximum Bloodlust AD bonus. The correct pattern is: engage with Spinning Slash, auto-attack with Hail of Blades, wait until health drops to a dangerous level before activating Undying Rage (not too early or you waste damage-free seconds, not too late or you die before casting), continue auto-attacking during Undying Rage with maximum Bloodlust bonus AD, then use Bloodlust's active heal and Spinning Slash away when the ultimate is about to expire.
Mid Lane: Tryndamere's early mid lane focuses on shoving waves with Spinning Slash and auto attacks, then roaming to side lanes for kills.
Start E (Spinning Slash) level 1 to clear the wave. Mid lane Tryndamere plays more aggressively than top because mid laners are generally squishier and shorter lane means safer positioning. Shove the wave with Spinning Slash and auto attacks, then look for roam opportunities to bot or top lane. At level 6, Tryndamere can dive most mid laners under tower with Undying Rage, especially if they have been poked to 60% health by prior trades.
Mid Game & Teamfights (14-25 min)
Mid-game Tryndamere with Essence Reaver and Infinity Edge completed is a dominant split-pusher who can 1v1 virtually any champion and destroy towers rapidly with crit-amplified auto attacks.
Tryndamere's mid-game strategy revolves around split pushing. With Infinity Edge amplifying his critical strikes and Essence Reaver's Spellblade empowering every post-Spinning Slash auto attack, Tryndamere destroys towers faster than almost any champion in the game. Push a side lane, force the enemy to send someone to match you, and duel them with your Undying Rage advantage — very few champions can 1v1 Tryndamere when he has ult because they must deal with 5 seconds of free damage from a champion with maximum bonus AD and crit chance.
In teamfights, Tryndamere should flank from the side or rear, Spinning Slash onto the enemy carries, activate Mocking Shout to reduce their AD and slow their escape, and auto-attack with crit-empowered strikes while saving Undying Rage for when he is about to die. Tryndamere is not a frontline champion — diving into the front of the enemy team means getting crowd-controlled before reaching the backline. Instead, split push to draw enemies away from objectives, and if forced to teamfight, wait for the enemy to use key abilities before Spinning Slash flanking.
Late Game (25+ min)
Late-game Tryndamere with full crit items is a split-push menace whose tower-destroying speed and 1v1 dominance forces the enemy team into impossible decisions — send one person to stop him and Tryndamere kills them with Undying Rage, send two or more and Tryndamere's team takes an objective elsewhere.
In the late game, Tryndamere's value is almost entirely in split pushing. With 80-100% crit chance from items and Battle Fury, every auto attack is a guaranteed crit that deals massive damage to champions, minions, and structures. Push a side lane while your team pressures Baron or Dragon on the opposite side of the map. If the enemy sends multiple champions to stop Tryndamere, ping your team to take the objective. If they send only one, duel them and take their tower.
Teamfighting in the late game requires careful timing. Tryndamere should Spinning Slash onto the enemy ADC or mage, auto-attack them during Undying Rage, and try to kill them before the 5 seconds expire. If successful, use Bloodlust's heal and Spinning Slash to exit the fight. If unsuccessful, Spinning Slash through a wall to escape after Undying Rage expires and regroup. The key decision point is whether to Bloodlust heal during Undying Rage (sacrificing Fury and crit chance for immediate health) or save Fury for sustained damage — generally, save Fury during the ultimate for maximum crit chance and heal immediately after Undying Rage expires.
Matchups
Top Lane
#### Favorable
- K'Sante — Tryndamere wins against K'Sante (~56% WR). K'Sante relies on defensive stats and extended trades, but Tryndamere's Mocking Shout strips K'Sante's attack damage while Undying Rage lets Tryndamere survive K'Sante's All Out ultimate combo. K'Sante cannot disengage from Tryndamere easily once Spinning Slash closes the gap, and Tryndamere's crit damage overwhelms K'Sante's defenses in extended fights.
- Gwen — Tryndamere wins against Gwen (~55% WR). Gwen relies on Hallowed Mist's armor and magic resist bonus, but Tryndamere fights in melee range where Hallowed Mist cannot zone him out. Mocking Shout's AD reduction weakens Gwen's auto-attack damage, and Tryndamere's Undying Rage outlasts Gwen's Hallowed Mist duration, letting him continue fighting after her defensive steroid expires.
- Rumble — Tryndamere wins against Rumble (~55% WR). Rumble's Flamespitter deals sustained magic damage, but Tryndamere sustains through it with Bloodlust heals and can all-in Rumble when he overheats — Rumble is silenced for 6 seconds when overheated, unable to use abilities while Tryndamere auto-attacks freely with Undying Rage backup if needed.
#### Even
- Darius — Tryndamere fights approximately even against Darius (~50% WR). Both are lane bullies who want extended trades. Darius's Hemorrhage bleed and Noxian Guillotine execute are dangerous, but Undying Rage prevents the execute from killing Tryndamere, and Mocking Shout's AD reduction weakens Darius's auto-attack damage that applies bleed stacks. The matchup depends on whether Tryndamere can avoid 5-stack Hemorrhage before committing to the all-in.
- Jax — Tryndamere fights approximately even against Jax (~50% WR). Both are auto-attack-focused duelists. Jax's Counter Strike blocks Tryndamere's auto attacks entirely for 2 seconds, but Tryndamere can Spinning Slash away to disengage during Counter Strike and re-engage after it expires. The matchup often comes down to Undying Rage timing versus Counter Strike timing — if Jax wastes Counter Strike early, Tryndamere wins; if Jax saves it for during Undying Rage, Jax wins.
#### Unfavorable
- Poppy — Tryndamere loses to Poppy (~42% WR). Poppy's Steadfast Presence grounds nearby enemies and blocks all dashes, completely negating Spinning Slash as both a gap-closer and escape tool. Poppy's Heroic Charge stuns Tryndamere against walls, and Keeper's Verdict knocks him away from fights entirely. Poppy's kit is fundamentally designed to counter dash-reliant melee champions like Tryndamere.
- Singed — Tryndamere loses to Singed (~43% WR). Singed proxy farms behind Tryndamere's tower, making it impossible for Tryndamere to trade with him normally. Singed's Fling disrupts Tryndamere's all-ins by throwing him backwards, Mega Adhesive grounds Tryndamere preventing Spinning Slash, and Singed's poison trail kites Tryndamere indefinitely since Singed runs faster than Tryndamere can chase.
- Vayne — Tryndamere loses to Vayne (~45% WR). Vayne's ranged auto attacks and Silver Bolts true damage bypass any defensive stats or sustain Tryndamere has. Condemn pins Tryndamere to walls or knocks him away when he Spinning Slashes in, and Tumble provides constant repositioning that makes it nearly impossible for Tryndamere to land consecutive auto attacks even with Mocking Shout's slow.
Best Synergy Partners
Tryndamere pairs best with champions who provide crowd control to lock down targets for his auto attacks and who can pressure the map while he split pushes:
- Zac — Zac's Elastic Slingshot engage and Let's Bounce ultimate provide long-range AOE crowd control that groups and locks down enemies, giving Tryndamere time to Spinning Slash in and auto-attack immobilized targets. Zac's frontline presence in teamfights creates space for Tryndamere to flank, and Zac's ganks set up free kills for Tryndamere in top lane.
- Lulu — Lulu's Whimsy polymorph disables the enemy champion most capable of peeling Tryndamere away from carries, Wild Growth's knock-up and health bonus helps Tryndamere survive long enough to activate Undying Rage, and Help, Pix!'s shield and attack speed steroid amplify Tryndamere's already-devastating auto-attack damage.
- Orianna — Orianna's Command: Shockwave groups enemies together for Tryndamere to cleave through with Spinning Slash and crit-empowered auto attacks. Command: Protect can shield Tryndamere during his dive, and Command: Dissonance's speed zone helps him reach the backline faster.
- Jinx — Jinx creates a dual-threat composition where enemies must choose between stopping Tryndamere's split push and dealing with Jinx's hyper-carry DPS in teamfights. If the enemy sends players to stop Tryndamere, Jinx has fewer threats to deal with; if they ignore Tryndamere, he takes towers and inhibitors.
Recent Patch Changes
Tryndamere's current state in Patch 16.6 reflects the aftermath of his significant gameplay update in Patch 26.1 and subsequent balance adjustments — his 51.8% top lane win rate and 50.7% mid lane win rate indicate he is viable but not dominant, with a 2.9% combined pick rate showing steady play from dedicated Tryndamere specialists.
The Patch 26.1 gameplay update reworked several core aspects of Tryndamere's kit: Bloodlust's passive AD bonus now reaches full value at 10% remaining health instead of scaling linearly, meaning Tryndamere gains maximum bonus AD during Undying Rage's unkillable window; Mocking Shout's slow now applies to enemies moving away from Tryndamere regardless of which direction they were facing when the ability was cast, dramatically increasing its reliability as a chasing tool; however, early Q bonus AD and early E damage were nerfed to reduce his oppressive early-game all-ins with 200% crit damage. The Patch 26.01b hotfix provided follow-up buffs to compensate for the initial power loss. Most recently, Patch 26.6 increased Tryndamere's attack speed ratio, making attack speed items scale harder — this is a late-game scaling buff that kicks in as items are purchased, improving his right-click damage on champions with critical strikes while leaving his level 1 attack speed unchanged.
