Best Veigar Build & Guide (2026) — League of Legends
The definitive Veigar build guide for 2026. Optimal items, runes, ability order, playstyle tips, and matchup advice backed by data from thousands of ranked League of Legends matches.
Veigar is League of Legends' Tiny Master of Evil — an infinitely scaling burst mage who farms ability power stacks with Phenomenal Evil Power by hitting champions with abilities and killing minions with Baleful Strike, traps enemies inside Event Horizon's cage stun for guaranteed Dark Matter detonations, and obliterates low-health targets with Primordial Burst's massive execute damage that scales with both his own AP and the target's missing health. He is a mid lane mage who builds Rod of Ages into Luden's Echo and AP items to maximize his one-shot potential, making him one of the most feared late-game mages who can delete any squishy champion with a single rotation. Veigar is played as a mid lane mage (51.0% win rate on Patch 16.6 Emerald+, S Tier) with a 4.1% pick rate. Whether you want to infinitely stack AP through Phenomenal Evil Power to reach 1000+ AP in long games, cage an entire team inside Event Horizon's 2.5-second stun for devastating AoE follow-up, one-shot any squishy champion with a single Primordial Burst that deals up to 650 (+150% AP) damage against low-health targets, or rain Dark Matter from the sky with a cooldown that drops below 2 seconds at high stack counts, this guide covers everything you need to master the Tiny Master of Evil in 2026.
Veigar Overview
Veigar operates as an infinitely scaling burst mage whose power comes from Phenomenal Evil Power's unlimited AP stacking combined with one of the strongest single-target executes in the game in Primordial Burst, and the most powerful non-ultimate zone control ability in Event Horizon's cage stun. Unlike lane-dominant mages who spike early and fall off, Veigar gets stronger with every passing minute as his passive accumulates AP stacks, eventually reaching a point where his burst damage exceeds every other mage in the game. He is played as a mid lane mage (51.0% win rate on Patch 16.6 Emerald+) with a 4.1% pick rate.
Unlike sustained-damage mages who need extended fights to deal their full damage or poke mages who whittle enemies down over time, Veigar wins games through infinite AP scaling, devastating burst combos, and unmatched zone control — Phenomenal Evil Power grants 1 AP per stack with no cap, accumulating through ability hits on champions and minion kills with Q, meaning a 30-minute Veigar can reach 500+ bonus AP on top of his items. Event Horizon's cage creates a 3-second zone that stuns any enemy who touches the perimeter for up to 2.5 seconds, guaranteeing Dark Matter's 1.2-second delayed AoE lands for full damage. Primordial Burst deals between 175-350 base damage at rank 1 up to 325-650 base damage at rank 3, with AP ratios ranging from 65-130% to 75-150% depending on the target's missing health — against a target below 33% health, Primordial Burst's damage is doubled, making it one of the most powerful execute abilities in the game. Veigar's strength lies in his late-game scaling — once he has 3+ items and 300+ passive stacks, no squishy champion survives his full combo.
Phenomenal Evil Power (Passive) grants Veigar 1 stack whenever he hits an enemy champion with an ability, and 5 stacks on champion takedowns. Each stack of Phenomenal Evil grants 1 ability power permanently with no cap. Additionally, killing a unit with Baleful Strike grants 1 stack, doubled to 2 stacks for large minions and large monsters. Phenomenal Evil Power is what makes Veigar unique among all mages — the infinite AP scaling means Veigar's damage never plateaus. By 20 minutes, a farming Veigar typically has 100-150 bonus AP from stacks alone, and by 30-35 minutes this can exceed 300-400 bonus AP, effectively giving Veigar a free Rabadon's Deathcap worth of stats on top of his items.
Baleful Strike (Q) has a 7 / 6.5 / 6 / 5.5 / 5-second cooldown and costs 30 / 35 / 40 / 45 / 50 mana. Veigar unleashes a bolt of dark energy that pierces through the first two enemies hit, dealing 80 / 120 / 160 / 200 / 240 (+50 / 55 / 60 / 65 / 70% AP) magic damage to each. Killing a unit with Baleful Strike grants 1 stack of Phenomenal Evil, doubled to 2 stacks for large minions and large monsters. Baleful Strike is Veigar's bread-and-butter ability — the low cooldown and ability to hit two targets makes it his primary farming tool for both gold and Phenomenal Evil stacks. The increasing AP ratio from 50% to 70% per rank means Q max first provides both waveclear and significant burst damage scaling. Landing Q on two minions simultaneously doubles Veigar's stacking speed, which is why positioning to line up Q through multiple targets is critical.
Dark Matter (W) has an 8-second base cooldown and costs 60 / 65 / 70 / 75 / 80 mana. After a 1.2-second delay, dark matter falls from the sky at the target location, dealing 85 / 140 / 195 / 250 / 305 (+70 / 80 / 90 / 100 / 110% AP) magic damage to all enemies in the area. Every 50 stacks of Phenomenal Evil reduces Dark Matter's cooldown by 10%, stacking multiplicatively. Dark Matter is Veigar's highest-damage basic ability with a massive 110% AP ratio at max rank, but the 1.2-second delay means it requires setup from Event Horizon's stun to land reliably. The passive cooldown reduction from Phenomenal Evil stacks is what transforms Veigar in the late game — at 200 stacks, Dark Matter's cooldown is reduced by roughly 35%, and at 400+ stacks it can drop below 3 seconds, allowing Veigar to rain Dark Matter repeatedly in extended fights.
Event Horizon (E) has a 20 / 18 / 16 / 14 / 12-second cooldown and costs 70 / 75 / 80 / 85 / 90 mana. After a 0.5-second delay, Veigar creates a cage of dark energy at the target location for 3 seconds. Enemies who pass through the cage's perimeter are stunned for 1.5 / 1.75 / 2 / 2.25 / 2.5 seconds. Event Horizon is one of the most powerful basic abilities in League of Legends — the massive cage zone forces enemies to either stand still inside it (eating Dark Matter and Q for free) or attempt to walk through the perimeter and get stunned for up to 2.5 seconds. The cage's size makes it nearly impossible to dodge in tight jungle corridors, and a well-placed Event Horizon can stun multiple enemies in teamfights, setting up devastating AoE combos. The 0.5-second formation delay is Event Horizon's only counterplay window — enemies with dashes can escape before the cage forms.
Primordial Burst (R) has a 100 / 60 / 60-second cooldown and costs 100 mana at all ranks. Veigar blasts a target enemy champion with primal magic, dealing between 175 / 250 / 325 (+65 / 70 / 75% AP) and 350 / 500 / 650 (+130 / 140 / 150% AP) magic damage, increasing based on the target's missing health. Damage is maximized against targets below 33% health. Primordial Burst is Veigar's signature execute — at maximum damage against a low-health target, it deals 650 (+150% AP) magic damage at rank 3, which with 800 AP translates to 1850 magic damage before resistances. This makes Primordial Burst the single hardest-hitting point-and-click ability in League of Legends. Even at minimum damage against a full-health target, it still deals 325 (+75% AP) — a significant nuke that chunks any squishy champion.
Strengths
- Phenomenal Evil Power's infinite AP scaling means Veigar has no damage ceiling — every game that goes past 25 minutes gives Veigar hundreds of bonus AP from stacks alone, effectively granting him a free item's worth of stats that grows larger the longer the game goes, making him the hardest-scaling mage in the game who can reach 1000+ AP in extended matches and one-shot any champion regardless of their magic resistance — No other mage scales as infinitely or reaches Veigar's late-game burst potential
- Event Horizon is the most powerful non-ultimate zone control ability in League of Legends — the massive cage stuns any enemy who touches its perimeter for up to 2.5 seconds, forces immobile champions to stand still inside the cage while Veigar drops Dark Matter on them, and can catch entire teams in chokepoints during objective fights, making it both an offensive pick tool and a defensive peel tool — A single well-placed Event Horizon can win an entire teamfight by stunning 2-3 enemies simultaneously
- Primordial Burst is a point-and-click execute that deals up to 650 (+150% AP) magic damage against low-health targets, making it undodgeable and guaranteed to kill any squishy champion below 40-50% health in the mid-to-late game — combined with Veigar's infinite scaling, Primordial Burst's damage eventually exceeds the maximum health of most champions, turning it into a guaranteed kill button — No squishy champion can survive Primordial Burst from a late-game Veigar
- Dark Matter's cooldown reduction from Phenomenal Evil stacks transforms Veigar from a burst mage into a sustained-damage artillery mage in the late game — at 300+ stacks, Dark Matter has a sub-3-second cooldown with 305 (+110% AP) damage per cast, allowing Veigar to repeatedly bombard areas in teamfights and sieges with devastating AoE damage — Late-game Veigar's W spam rivals the DPS of sustained-damage mages while retaining his burst combo threat
Weaknesses
- Veigar's early game is one of the weakest of any mid lane mage — his base damage is low before stacking Phenomenal Evil, his waveclear is poor until he has items and ranks in W, and his 525-unit attack range combined with low base movement speed (340) makes him vulnerable to aggressive laners who can punish his need to farm Q stacks. Lane bullies like Syndra, LeBlanc, and Zed can snowball against Veigar before he reaches his power spikes — Veigar needs to survive 15-20 minutes of farming before he becomes a threatening force
- Event Horizon has a 0.5-second formation delay that gives mobile champions a window to dash or blink through the cage before it forms — champions with instant dashes like Ezreal (Arcane Shift), LeBlanc (Distortion), or Zed (Living Shadow) can escape the cage reactively, denying Veigar his guaranteed combo setup and removing his primary playmaking tool — Mobile champions severely limit Veigar's ability to land his full combo
- Veigar is extremely immobile with no dashes, movement speed steroids, or escape tools beyond Event Horizon's defensive cage placement — if Event Horizon is on cooldown or an enemy dashes through it before it forms, Veigar has zero way to escape ganks, flanks, or assassin dives, making him one of the most gankable mid laners in the game — A single successful gank can set Veigar behind on stacks and items, delaying his power spikes significantly
- Veigar's entire combo relies on landing Event Horizon first — if E misses or the enemy dashes out, Dark Matter's 1.2-second delay makes it nearly impossible to land without the stun setup, reducing Veigar's damage output to just Q poke and a weakened R execute. Against teams with multiple dashes and high mobility, Veigar's combo becomes unreliable and his burst potential drops dramatically — Without E, Veigar loses access to roughly 40% of his combo damage
Recommended Runes
Mid Lane: First Strike (Inspiration) — Most Popular & Highest Win Rate
The most popular and highest win rate rune page for Veigar Mid is First Strike in the Inspiration tree. First Strike synergizes perfectly with Veigar's burst combo because landing Event Horizon into Dark Matter and Baleful Strike deals massive frontloaded damage that generates significant bonus gold, accelerating his item spikes on top of his free AP from Phenomenal Evil stacks.
- First Strike — Going into champion combat grants bonus damage and generates gold based on the damage dealt within the first 0.25 seconds. First Strike is Veigar's ideal keystone because his full E-W-Q-R combo deals all of its damage in a short window after the stun lands, maximizing the bonus gold generation. The extra gold accelerates Veigar's already strong scaling by helping him reach Rod of Ages and Rabadon's Deathcap faster, and the bonus damage amplifies his already devastating burst.
- Magical Footwear — Grants free Slightly Magical Boots at 12 minutes (reduced by takedowns), providing 10 bonus movement speed over regular boots. Magical Footwear saves Veigar 300 gold on boots, accelerating his core item purchases, and the bonus movement speed partially compensates for his low base movement speed of 340. Veigar doesn't need early boots because he farms safely with Q range in most matchups.
- Biscuit Delivery — Provides 3 Total Biscuits of Everlasting Will that restore health and mana and permanently increase maximum mana. Biscuit Delivery gives Veigar the sustain he desperately needs during his weak early game — the health and mana restoration helps him survive poke lanes and continue farming Q stacks without being forced to recall, and the permanent mana increase helps support his mana-hungry combo in the mid game.
- Cosmic Insight — Grants bonus summoner spell haste and item haste. Cosmic Insight provides cooldown reduction on Flash and Teleport, keeping Veigar's critical defensive tools available more frequently, and item haste benefits active items like Zhonya's Hourglass.
Secondary — Sorcery
- Manaflow Band — Hitting enemy champions with abilities permanently increases maximum mana, up to 250 bonus mana, then restores a percentage of missing mana. Manaflow Band provides the mana pool Veigar needs to sustain his combo-heavy playstyle — his full E-W-Q-R rotation costs over 250 mana, and the missing mana regeneration at full stacks keeps him topped up for repeated combos in mid-game skirmishes.
- Transcendence — Grants bonus ability haste at levels 5 and 8, and champion takedowns reduce remaining ability cooldowns. Transcendence provides the ability haste Veigar needs to use his combo more frequently in teamfights, and the cooldown refund on takedowns allows Veigar to chain combos in multi-kill scenarios — landing one E-W-Q-R kill resets his cooldowns enough to immediately threaten a second target.
Alternative Rune — Electrocute (Domination)
- Electrocute — Hitting an enemy champion with 3 separate attacks or abilities within 3 seconds deals bonus adaptive damage. Electrocute adds significant burst to Veigar's combo in lane — E stun into W and Q triggers Electrocute for bonus damage, increasing his kill threat at level 6 with Primordial Burst. Electrocute is stronger than First Strike in aggressive matchups where Veigar can consistently trade.
Stat Shards
- Adaptive Force — Bonus AP increases Baleful Strike, Dark Matter, and Primordial Burst damage, amplifying Veigar's burst combo and Q poke in lane from level 1.
- Ability Haste — Bonus ability haste reduces Veigar's cooldowns, allowing him to cast Baleful Strike more frequently for faster Phenomenal Evil stacking and more combo attempts in the mid game.
- Health Scaling — Scaling health provides survivability against burst damage in mid-game teamfights, critical for an immobile mage with no escape tools beyond Event Horizon.
Recommended Item Build
Based on data from ranked Veigar matches tracked across multiple stat sites on Patch 16.6, the scaling AP build has the highest win rates for Mid Lane. Here are the optimal build paths.
Mid Lane Build
#### Early Game (0-10 min)
- Rod of Ages — Grants ability power, health, mana, and a passive that increases all three stats over 10 minutes, plus restoring health on mana expenditure and mana on taking damage. Rod of Ages is Veigar's ideal first item because the scaling stats align perfectly with his identity as an infinitely scaling mage — the health provides survivability for an immobile mage, the mana sustains his combo-heavy playstyle, and the AP stacks on top of his Phenomenal Evil passive for compounding scaling. The sustain passives help Veigar survive the mid game while he accumulates stacks.
- Sorcerer's Shoes — Grants magic penetration and movement speed. Sorcerer's Shoes provide the magic penetration Veigar needs to maximize his burst damage against targets with base magic resistance, and the movement speed partially compensates for his low 340 base MS, helping him position for Event Horizon cages and avoid ganks.
#### Core Build (10-20 min)
- Luden's Echo — Grants ability power, mana, ability haste, and a passive that deals bonus magic damage to the target and nearby enemies on ability hit. Luden's Echo adds AoE burst and waveclear to Veigar's kit — the passive proc deals bonus magic damage that spreads to nearby enemies, giving Veigar the AoE damage he lacks beyond Dark Matter. The magic penetration on the passive amplifies his single-target burst, and the mana and ability haste support his mana-hungry, cooldown-dependent playstyle.
- Rabadon's Deathcap — Grants 120 ability power and a passive that increases total AP by 35%. Rabadon's Deathcap is the single most important item for Veigar because the 35% total AP amplification applies to both his item AP and his Phenomenal Evil stacks — at 300 passive stacks with Deathcap, those stacks provide 405 AP instead of 300, and this amplification only grows as Veigar continues stacking. Deathcap transforms Veigar's damage from threatening to lethal, enabling one-shot kills with R alone against squishy targets.
#### Late Game (25+ min)
- Void Staff — Grants ability power and 40% magic penetration. Void Staff ensures Veigar's burst damage remains devastating against targets who build magic resistance — without Void Staff, enemies with 100+ MR can survive Veigar's combo even with his massive AP, but the 40% magic penetration cuts through defensive itemization and keeps Primordial Burst lethal.
- Zhonya's Hourglass — Grants ability power, armor, ability haste, and a Stasis active that makes Veigar invulnerable for 2.5 seconds. Zhonya's Hourglass is essential for Veigar because he is an immobile mage who must position within combo range — the Stasis active provides a critical survival tool against assassins, divers, and burst damage that would otherwise kill him before he can cast his combo. The armor helps against AD assassins like Zed and Talon.
- Banshee's Veil — Grants ability power, magic resistance, and a spell shield that blocks the next enemy ability. Banshee's Veil protects Veigar from pick-off abilities and engagement tools that would interrupt his combo setup — the spell shield blocks abilities like Blitzcrank Hook, Ahri Charm, or Syndra Scatter that would otherwise prevent Veigar from casting Event Horizon.
Situational Items
- Archangel's Staff — Provides ability power, mana, ability haste, and a passive that converts bonus mana into AP — strong when Veigar needs a larger mana pool for extended teamfights and siege scenarios where he spams W repeatedly.
- Shadowflame — Provides ability power and magic penetration that increases against low-health targets — excellent for maximizing Primordial Burst's execute damage against squishy targets who have already been chunked.
- Morellonomicon — Provides ability power, health, and grievous wounds on ability damage — essential against teams with heavy healing from champions like Soraka, Yuumi, or lifesteal-stacking ADCs.
- Cosmic Drive — Provides ability power, health, ability haste, and bonus movement speed on ability hit — a strong option when Veigar needs more mobility to kite and reposition in teamfights against dive-heavy compositions.
Highest Win Rate 3-Item Combinations
The highest win rate build is Rod of Ages + Sorcerer's Shoes + Luden's Echo, which provides Rod of Ages' scaling health and mana for survivability, Sorcerer's Shoes' magic penetration for burst damage, and Luden's Echo's AoE proc and ability haste for waveclear and combo frequency. This three-item spike at approximately 20 minutes coincides with Veigar having 150-200 Phenomenal Evil stacks, pushing his total AP past 400 and enabling him to one-shot squishy targets with a full E-W-Q-R combo.
Ability Priority
Mid Lane: Q > W > E
- Baleful Strike (Q) — Max first. Each rank increases the damage from 80 to 240, the AP ratio from 50% to 70%, reduces the cooldown from 7 to 5 seconds, and increases mana cost from 30 to 50. Q max first is essential because it is Veigar's primary farming tool for both gold and Phenomenal Evil stacks — the lower cooldown means more Q casts per wave for faster stacking, the increased damage helps secure minion kills for guaranteed stack generation, and the scaling AP ratio from 50% to 70% provides meaningful burst damage increase per rank.
- Dark Matter (W) — Max second. Each rank increases the damage from 85 to 305, the AP ratio from 70% to 110%, and increases mana cost from 60 to 80. W max second provides Veigar's highest raw damage per ability with a massive 305 (+110% AP) at rank 5, making it his primary burst tool in the mid-to-late game. The increasing AP ratio per rank magnifies the value of Veigar's passive stacks, and the passive cooldown reduction from Phenomenal Evil stacks makes W increasingly spammable as the game progresses.
- Event Horizon (E) — Max last. Each rank reduces the cooldown from 20 to 12 seconds and increases the stun duration from 1.5 to 2.5 seconds, while increasing mana cost from 70 to 90. E is maxed last because its primary value comes from the cage's zone control and stun, which are effective at rank 1. The stun duration increase from 1.5s to 2.5s per rank is valuable but less impactful than Q's stacking speed or W's damage scaling.
Level-by-level order: Q, W, E, Q, Q, R, Q, W, Q, W, R, W, W, E, E, R, E, E.
Summoner Spells
Mid Lane
- Flash — Flash is essential on Veigar because he has zero mobility — no dashes, no blinks, and no movement speed steroids. Flash is his only escape from ganks, assassin dives, and teamfight engages. Flash also enables offensive Flash-Event Horizon combos that catch enemies off guard with an unexpected cage placement, guaranteeing a full burst combo on targets who thought they were safe.
- Teleport — Teleport allows Veigar to recall for items without losing minion waves and Phenomenal Evil stacking tempo, which is critical for a champion whose power scales directly with time spent farming. Teleport also enables Veigar to influence side lane fights and objectives from mid lane, compensating for his low roaming potential due to immobility.
- Barrier (Alternative) — Barrier provides an instant shield against burst damage, useful in matchups against assassins like Zed, Talon, or Fizz who threaten to one-shot Veigar in lane. Barrier is stronger than Teleport in kill lanes where surviving the enemy's all-in is more important than maintaining stacking tempo.
Playstyle Tips
Early Game / Laning Phase (0-14 min)
Veigar's early game in mid lane focuses on farming Phenomenal Evil stacks with Baleful Strike by last-hitting minions with Q while playing safely and avoiding trades until he has enough AP from stacks and items to threaten kills with his full combo at level 6.
Start Q (Baleful Strike) level 1 for farming and stacking Phenomenal Evil from the first wave. Position to line up Q through two minions simultaneously to double your stack generation per cast. Take W (Dark Matter) level 2 for waveclear and harass — drop W on the caster minions to push the wave. Take E (Event Horizon) level 3 for gank setup and self-peel — Event Horizon's cage can save your life against early jungle ganks.
The fundamental Veigar farming pattern is: position to line up Q through two low-health minions, last-hit both with a single Q for 2 Phenomenal Evil stacks, and use W to soften waves. Focus on maximizing Q last-hits rather than trading — every Q last-hit is a permanent AP stack that compounds over the game. Aim for 10-12 stacks per minute through consistent Q farming.
Play the laning phase defensively against aggressive mid laners. Veigar's base damage is low before stacking, and his immobility makes him vulnerable to all-ins and ganks. Use Event Horizon defensively to disengage from ganks and aggressive trades. Avoid extended trades against lane bullies — Veigar wins by outscaling, not by fighting early.
At level 6, Primordial Burst gives Veigar kill threat on any target below 40% health. The combo is E (cage) → W (Dark Matter on stunned target) → Q (Baleful Strike) → R (Primordial Burst to execute). This combo deals massive damage if the target is stunned by Event Horizon's perimeter, guaranteeing Dark Matter lands. Wait for the enemy to use their escape ability before committing Event Horizon to prevent them from dashing out.
Mid Game & Teamfights (14-25 min)
Mid-game Veigar with Rod of Ages and Luden's Echo completed is a threatening burst mage who can one-shot squishy champions with a full combo while providing game-changing zone control with Event Horizon in teamfights around objectives.
Veigar's mid-game strategy revolves around farming side waves for Phenomenal Evil stacks while grouping with his team for Dragon and Baron fights where Event Horizon's massive cage can catch multiple enemies. With Rod of Ages fully stacked and Luden's Echo, Veigar typically has 300-400+ total AP, enough to one-shot ADCs and supports with a full E-W-Q-R combo.
In mid-game teamfights, Veigar should position behind his frontline and wait for the enemy team to group before casting Event Horizon on as many enemies as possible. A well-placed cage in a chokepoint forces the entire enemy team to either stand still inside it or walk into the perimeter stun — either way, Dark Matter lands for free and Veigar can follow up with Q and R on priority targets. Save Primordial Burst for the highest-priority target who has been chunked below 50% health to guarantee the execute kill. The key is patience — Veigar's combo is devastating but has long cooldowns early, so casting E on a single tank wastes the ability when it could catch 3 enemies at the next objective fight.
Late Game (25+ min)
Late-game Veigar with Rabadon's Deathcap and 300+ Phenomenal Evil stacks is a hyper-scaling burst mage whose damage exceeds every other mage in the game, with Primordial Burst capable of one-shotting any non-tank champion from 60%+ health and Dark Matter's cooldown dropping below 3 seconds for relentless AoE bombardment.
In the late game, Veigar's AP from Phenomenal Evil stacks combined with Rabadon's Deathcap's 35% amplification pushes his total AP past 700-900, making every ability deal devastating damage. Primordial Burst at max damage against a low-health target deals 650 (+150% AP) — with 800 AP, that's 1850 magic damage before resistances, enough to kill almost any champion in the game from 50% health. Even Q alone deals 240 (+70% AP) = 800+ damage, chunking squishies for half their health bar.
Position behind your frontline and use Event Horizon to control space around objectives. In the late game, a single Event Horizon stun on the enemy ADC or mid laner means an instant kill with W-Q-R follow-up. Veigar's late-game threat is so high that enemies must respect Event Horizon's zone — the cage alone zones enemies out of fights even if it doesn't stun anyone, because walking into the perimeter means instant death. Use Dark Matter's reduced cooldown from passive stacks to provide constant AoE damage in siege and teamfight scenarios, and save R for the highest-value execute on a priority target.
Matchups
Mid Lane
#### Favorable
- Taliyah — Veigar dominates Taliyah (~60% WR). Taliyah's Threaded Volley relies on hitting multiple projectiles in a line, but Event Horizon's cage forces Taliyah to stand still or walk into a stun, disrupting her kiting pattern. Taliyah has no way to escape a well-placed Event Horizon without burning Flash, and Veigar's burst combo after the stun deals more damage than Taliyah can sustain through. Veigar outscales Taliyah significantly in the late game.
- Smolder — Veigar beats Smolder (~58% WR). Smolder's slow Q farming style gives Veigar free reign to stack Phenomenal Evil without pressure. Event Horizon catches Smolder easily since he lacks mobility, and Veigar's burst combo can one-shot Smolder at every stage of the game. Both champions scale, but Veigar's burst damage and zone control give him the edge in teamfights over Smolder's sustained DPS.
- Ryze — Veigar beats Ryze (~58% WR). Ryze needs to get within short range to trade with his combo, but Event Horizon punishes Ryze's aggressive positioning by caging him the moment he walks forward. Ryze's Realm Warp cannot escape Event Horizon's stun if he's already caught, and Veigar's burst damage far exceeds Ryze's sustained DPS in all-in scenarios. Veigar outscales Ryze in burst potential.
#### Even
- Orianna — Veigar fights approximately even against Orianna (~50% WR). Orianna's long-range Command: Attack poke can harass Veigar during his stacking phase, but Event Horizon's cage threatens Orianna if she positions aggressively with her ball. Both champions scale well into teamfights — Orianna provides AoE damage and utility with Shockwave while Veigar provides burst and zone control with Event Horizon. The matchup is decided by who lands their key ability first in teamfights.
- Ahri — Veigar fights approximately even against Ahri (~50% WR). Ahri's Spirit Rush dashes allow her to escape Event Horizon before it forms, denying Veigar his guaranteed combo. However, Ahri's burst damage is lower than Veigar's and she struggles to kill him through Zhonya's Hourglass. The lane is a skill matchup — Ahri wins if she can dodge Event Horizon and land Charm, Veigar wins if he catches Ahri without Spirit Rush available.
#### Unfavorable
- Ekko — Veigar loses to Ekko (~45% WR). Ekko's Phase Dive dash allows him to escape Event Horizon before it forms, and Chronobreak provides a free escape if he gets caught in a bad position. Ekko can trade aggressively into Veigar with short-range E-Q combos that Veigar cannot match in the early game, and Ekko's roaming pressure with E mobility far exceeds Veigar's non-existent roaming capability.
- Vel'Koz — Veigar loses to Vel'Koz (~46% WR). Vel'Koz's extreme long range allows him to poke Veigar relentlessly with Q and W without ever entering Event Horizon range. Vel'Koz can farm safely from 1000+ units away while Veigar needs to walk up to Q minions, and Vel'Koz's true damage from Organic Deconstruction passive ignores Veigar's defensive itemization. Vel'Koz's Lifeform Disintegration Ray also outranges Event Horizon.
- Aurelion Sol — Veigar loses to Aurelion Sol (~47% WR). Aurelion Sol's long-range Q poke and wave management keeps Veigar pushed under tower, limiting his ability to farm Q stacks efficiently. Aurelion Sol also scales infinitely with Stardust stacks, matching Veigar's late-game power while providing better utility and AoE damage. Aurelion Sol's Flight allows him to escape Event Horizon, and his Falling Star/The Skies Descend provides teamfight impact that rivals Veigar's zone control.
Best Synergy Partners
Veigar pairs best with champions who provide engage and crowd control to set up Event Horizon combos, or who can protect him from assassins and divers who threaten his immobile positioning:
- Jarvan IV — Jarvan IV's Cataclysm traps enemies inside a ring of terrain, creating a perfect setup for Event Horizon's cage. Enemies trapped in Cataclysm cannot escape Event Horizon without Flash, and the combined zone control of Cataclysm plus Event Horizon creates an inescapable kill zone where Veigar can land Dark Matter and Primordial Burst for free. Jarvan's Demacian Standard + Dragon Strike engage also knocks enemies into Event Horizon range.
- Leona — Leona's Zenith Blade engage and Shield of Daybreak stun lock down targets long enough for Veigar to place Event Horizon on top of them. Leona's Solar Flare provides additional AoE stun that overlaps with Event Horizon's cage, creating chain crowd control that prevents enemies from ever acting while Veigar bursts them down. Leona's tankiness also provides a frontline for the immobile Veigar.
- Nautilus — Nautilus's Dredge Line hook and Depth Charge point-and-click knock-up provide reliable crowd control that sets up guaranteed Event Horizon stuns. Nautilus's passive Staggering Blow auto-attack root adds even more lockdown to the chain, and the combined crowd control duration of Nautilus plus Veigar can exceed 5 seconds — more than enough for Veigar to cast his full combo twice.
Recent Patch Changes
Veigar's current state in Patch 16.6 reflects a strong position in the mid lane meta — his 51.0% win rate and 4.1% pick rate in Emerald+ place him in S Tier, indicating that the Tiny Master of Evil is one of the most effective mid lane mages in the current meta for players who can navigate his weak early game and exploit his infinite scaling potential.
The First Strike Inspiration build with Sorcery secondary has established itself as the dominant rune configuration, rewarding Veigar players who land their E-W-Q-R combo for bonus gold that accelerates his already powerful item scaling on top of his free AP from Phenomenal Evil stacks. The Rod of Ages into Luden's Echo into Rabadon's Deathcap build path provides the optimal balance of scaling health, mana sustain, AoE burst, and the critical 35% AP amplification from Deathcap that multiplies both item AP and passive stacks. Veigar's dominant matchups against Taliyah (60%) and Smolder (58%) confirm his identity as a scaling mage who punishes immobile champions with Event Horizon's inescapable cage stun, while his struggles against mobile assassins like Ekko (45%) and long-range artillery like Vel'Koz (46%) highlight his vulnerability to champions who can avoid or outrange Event Horizon.
