Best Vex Build & Guide (2026) — League of Legends
The definitive Vex build guide for 2026. Optimal items, runes, ability order, playstyle tips, and matchup advice backed by data from thousands of ranked League of Legends matches.
Vex is League of Legends' Gloomist — a yordle shadow mage and the game's dedicated anti-mobility specialist who punishes dashing champions with Doom 'n Gloom by fearing enemies with empowered abilities and marking anyone who dashes nearby for bonus magic damage, launches Mistral Bolt as a wave of mist that accelerates and narrows for long-range poke, detonates Personal Space to shield herself and blast nearby enemies, casts Looming Darkness to send Shadow forward for area slow and Gloom application, and engages with Shadow Surge's long-range skillshot that lets her dash to marked champions with a cooldown reset on kill. She is a mid lane burst mage who builds Luden's Echo into Shadowflame and raw ability power to one-shot squishies and shut down mobile assassins. Vex is played as a mid lane mage (52.0% win rate on Patch 16.6 Emerald+, S Tier) with a 2.7% pick rate and 3.3% ban rate. Whether you want to fear dashing enemies with Doom's empowered abilities, detonate Gloom marks on mobile champions for massive bonus damage, dive the backline with Shadow Surge's long-range engage that resets on kill, or shut down Yasuo, Yone, and Katarina with your anti-mobility kit, this guide covers everything you need to master the Gloomist in 2026.
Vex Overview
Vex operates as a burst mage and anti-mobility specialist whose power comes from Doom 'n Gloom's fear and Gloom mark mechanics combined with strong waveclear, a defensive shield, and one of the most unique engage ultimates among mages in Shadow Surge. Unlike traditional artillery mages who poke from range, Vex wins fights by punishing enemy dashes with fear and bonus damage, then diving the backline with her ultimate to assassinate priority targets. She is played as a mid lane mage (52.0% win rate on Patch 16.6 Emerald+) with a 2.7% pick rate.
Unlike assassins who rely on mobility to reach targets or control mages who zone enemies from a distance, Vex wins games through anti-mobility disruption, burst damage, and ultimate resets — Doom 'n Gloom periodically empowers her next basic ability to fear enemies hit for 0.75-1.5 seconds while marking any nearby enemy who dashes or blinks with Gloom for 6 seconds, and detonating a Gloom mark deals 40-150 (+25% AP) bonus magic damage while reducing Doom's cooldown by 25%. Mistral Bolt fires a wave that accelerates and narrows after traveling a set distance, dealing 70-250 (+70% AP) magic damage. Shadow Surge fires Shadow as a long-range projectile that marks the first champion hit, letting Vex recast to dash to them and dealing a combined 225-525 (+70% AP) magic damage — and if the marked target dies within 6 seconds, Shadow Surge's cooldown resets completely, enabling chain kills in teamfights. Vex's strength lies in her ability to completely neutralize mobile champions while also serving as a mage-assassin who can dive and reset through entire teams.
Doom 'n Gloom (Passive) has two components. Doom periodically empowers Vex's next basic ability to interrupt dashes and fear enemies hit for 0.75 / 1 / 1.25 / 1.5 seconds (based on level 1/6/11/16), with the fear applying a 60%-99% slow based on distance from Vex. Doom's static cooldown is 25 / 22 / 19 / 16 seconds (based on level 1/6/11/16). Gloom marks nearby enemies who dash or blink for 6 seconds, and Vex's next basic attack or ability against a Gloomed enemy detonates the mark dealing 40-150 (+25% AP) bonus magic damage and reducing Doom's cooldown by 25%. Doom 'n Gloom is what makes Vex the premier anti-mobility champion — every time an enemy dashes near her they are marked for bonus damage, and her empowered abilities interrupt dashes and fear targets, making champions like Yasuo, Yone, Katarina, Irelia, and Akali unable to function normally in fights against Vex.
Mistral Bolt (Q) has an 8 / 7 / 6 / 5 / 4-second cooldown and costs 45 / 50 / 55 / 60 / 65 mana. Vex launches a wave of mist that deals 70 / 115 / 160 / 205 / 250 (+70% AP) magic damage to enemies hit. The wave starts wide (360 units) and slow (600 speed), then narrows (160 units) and accelerates (3200 speed) after a set distance, making it easier to hit at close range but still threatening at long range. Mistral Bolt consumes Gloom marks on hit. Mistral Bolt is Vex's primary poke and waveclear tool — the wide initial hitbox makes it reliable for clearing waves and hitting nearby enemies, while the narrow fast portion rewards players who predict enemy movement at longer ranges. The 4-second cooldown at rank 5 allows for rapid poke rotations.
Personal Space (W) has a 16 / 15 / 14 / 13 / 12-second cooldown and costs 75 mana at all ranks. Vex emits a shockwave that deals 80 / 120 / 160 / 200 / 240 (+30% AP) magic damage to nearby enemies and grants her a 50 / 75 / 100 / 125 / 150 (+75% AP) shield for 2.5 seconds. Personal Space consumes Gloom marks on hit. Personal Space is Vex's survivability and close-range burst tool — the shield scales heavily with AP (75% ratio), making it deceptively strong in the mid-to-late game. When used with Doom empowerment, Personal Space fears all nearby enemies, providing devastating AoE disruption against diving enemies and functioning as Vex's primary self-peel.
Looming Darkness (E) has a 13-second cooldown at all ranks and costs 70 / 80 / 90 / 100 / 110 mana. Vex commands Shadow to fly to a target location, dealing 50 / 70 / 90 / 110 / 130 (+40 / 45 / 50 / 55 / 60% AP) magic damage and slowing enemies by 30 / 35 / 40 / 45 / 50% for 2 seconds. The area of effect increases based on cast distance (200-300 units). Looming Darkness applies Gloom to enemies hit. Looming Darkness is Vex's setup ability — it applies Gloom marks that her other abilities and attacks can detonate for bonus damage, and the slow makes it easier to land Mistral Bolt. When empowered by Doom, Looming Darkness fears enemies in the area while also applying Gloom, creating a devastating two-part crowd control chain.
Shadow Surge (R) has a 140 / 120 / 100-second cooldown and costs 100 mana at all ranks. Vex commands Shadow to surge forward in a line, dealing 75 / 125 / 175 (+20% AP) magic damage to the first enemy champion hit and marking them for 4 seconds. Recast: Vex dashes to the marked target, dealing 150 / 250 / 350 (+50% AP) magic damage on arrival for a total of 225 / 375 / 525 (+70% AP). If the marked champion dies within 6 seconds of taking ability damage from Vex, Shadow Surge's cooldown resets completely. The range increases per rank: 2000 / 2500 / 3000 units. Shadow Surge is what transforms Vex from a standard mage into a mage-assassin — the 3000-unit range at rank 3 lets her engage from beyond ward range, the dash delivers her into Personal Space and Mistral Bolt range for immediate burst, and the reset mechanic means a single kill can chain into a team wipe as Vex dashes from target to target.
Strengths
- Doom 'n Gloom makes Vex the hardest counter to mobile champions in League of Legends — every time an enemy dashes or blinks near her, they are marked with Gloom for bonus damage, and her Doom-empowered abilities interrupt dashes mid-flight and fear targets for up to 1.5 seconds, meaning champions like Yasuo, Yone, Katarina, Irelia, Akali, and LeBlanc cannot use their core mobility without being punished with fear, bonus damage, and reduced Doom cooldowns — Vex single-handedly shuts down mobility-reliant team compositions
- Shadow Surge is one of the longest-range engage ultimates among mages — 3000 units at rank 3 lets Vex initiate fights from beyond ward range, and the cooldown reset on kill means a single pick turns into a chain of dashes through the entire enemy team. No other mage can repeatedly dive the backline 3-4 times in a single teamfight, executing priority targets one after another as each kill resets her engage — Vex's teamfight cleanup potential is unmatched among burst mages
- Personal Space's 75% AP ratio shield gives Vex surprising durability for a burst mage — at 500 AP, the shield absorbs 525 damage on top of dealing 240 (+150) magic damage in an AoE around her. When combined with Doom empowerment, Personal Space fears all nearby enemies while shielding Vex, making her extremely difficult to kill when she dives with Shadow Surge — Unlike other burst mages, Vex can absorb significant damage during her engage
- Vex's waveclear with Mistral Bolt and Personal Space is fast and reliable — Q's wide hitbox clears caster minions in one cast at higher ranks, and W instantly damages all surrounding minions, giving Vex priority to roam with Shadow Surge. Her push speed rivals dedicated waveclear mages while also providing burst and utility — Consistent lane priority enables roaming and jungle assistance
Weaknesses
- Against immobile champions who don't trigger Gloom, Vex loses her anti-mobility identity entirely — champions like Annie, Anivia, Brand, and Veigar never dash, meaning Doom 'n Gloom's cooldown reduction from Gloom pops never activates and Vex never gets bonus damage from mark detonation. Against these matchups, Vex is a standard burst mage without her defining passive advantage — Vex's power budget is heavily invested in anti-mobility, making her weaker against champions who don't trigger it
- Shadow Surge is a commitment with no escape — once Vex recasts R to dash to her target, she has no way to retreat if the burst doesn't kill. If the target survives or has allies nearby, Vex is stuck in melee range as a squishy mage with only Personal Space's shield for defense. Missing the initial skillshot wastes her ultimate entirely — Vex's engage is all-or-nothing with no exit strategy
- Vex's damage outside of Doom 'n Gloom procs is moderate compared to dedicated burst mages — without Gloom marks to detonate and Doom fears to extend combos, her raw ability damage from Q, W, and E alone doesn't match champions like Syndra or Viktor in pure output. She depends on her passive mechanics to reach her damage ceiling — Without passive procs, Vex's burst falls short of other mid lane mages
- Looming Darkness has a high mana cost (110 at rank 5) and a fixed 13-second cooldown at all ranks, meaning Vex cannot spam her Gloom application tool in extended fights. If she uses E to setup and misses, she has no way to apply Gloom marks for 13 seconds, significantly reducing her damage output and passive synergy — Missing E severely hampers Vex's combo potential for a long window
Recommended Runes
Mid Lane: Electrocute (Domination) — Most Popular & Highest Win Rate
The most popular and highest win rate rune page for Vex Mid is Electrocute in the Domination tree. Electrocute synergizes perfectly with Vex's burst combo playstyle because her E-Q-W rotation triggers Electrocute instantly, and the bonus burst damage combined with Gloom detonations creates enough damage to one-shot squishy targets from level 6 onwards.
- Electrocute — Hitting an enemy champion with 3 separate attacks or abilities within 3 seconds deals bonus adaptive damage. Electrocute is Vex's ideal keystone because her standard E-Q-W combo hits 3 times in rapid succession, triggering the burst immediately. The bonus damage amplifies Vex's all-in kill threat at level 6 when combined with Shadow Surge's damage, making her one of the most dangerous level 6 all-in champions in mid lane.
- Taste of Blood — Damaging an enemy champion heals Vex for a small amount, providing lane sustain. Taste of Blood keeps Vex healthy during the laning phase when she trades with Q poke and E-Q combos, offsetting chip damage from enemy poke and allowing her to stay in lane longer to reach her level 6 power spike.
- Grisly Mementos — Grants bonus adaptive force per unique champion takedown. Grisly Mementos rewards Vex's snowball playstyle — each kill from Shadow Surge chains increases her AP permanently, making subsequent resets even more lethal and snowballing her damage throughout the mid and late game.
- Ultimate Hunter — Gain ultimate ability haste per unique champion takedown. Ultimate Hunter reduces Shadow Surge's cooldown significantly at full stacks, allowing Vex to use her engage ultimate in nearly every skirmish and teamfight. Since Shadow Surge is Vex's primary engagement and kill tool, having it available more frequently is essential.
Secondary — Sorcery
- Manaflow Band — Hitting enemy champions with abilities permanently increases maximum mana, up to 250 bonus mana, then restores a percentage of missing mana. Manaflow Band provides the mana sustain Vex needs for her poke-heavy laning phase — her E-Q combo costs over 115 mana, and the missing mana regeneration at full stacks keeps her topped up for continuous trading and waveclear.
- Transcendence — Grants bonus ability haste at levels 5 and 8, and champion takedowns reduce remaining ability cooldowns. Transcendence provides ability haste that reduces Q and W cooldowns for more frequent trading, and the cooldown refund on takedowns synergizes with Shadow Surge resets — after killing a target with R, Transcendence resets Vex's basic ability cooldowns so she can immediately burst the next target.
Alternative Secondary — Inspiration
- Magical Footwear — Grants free boots at 12 minutes (reduced by 45 seconds per takedown). Magical Footwear saves 300 gold and provides 10 bonus movement speed, accelerating Vex's core item completion.
- Cosmic Insight — Grants bonus summoner spell haste and item haste. Cosmic Insight reduces Flash and Ignite cooldowns, giving Vex more frequent access to her Flash-W fear combo and Ignite for kill pressure.
Stat Shards
- Adaptive Force — Bonus AP increases Mistral Bolt, Personal Space, Looming Darkness, and Shadow Surge damage, amplifying Vex's burst and Gloom detonation damage from level 1.
- Adaptive Force — Double adaptive force maximizes Vex's early trading damage with Q poke and E-Q combos, increasing lane pressure and kill threat at level 6.
- Health Scaling — Scaling health provides survivability in mid-game teamfights, important for a mage who dives into the enemy team with Shadow Surge and needs to survive long enough to chain resets.
Recommended Item Build
Based on data from ranked Vex matches tracked across multiple stat sites on Patch 16.6, the burst AP build has the highest win rates for Mid Lane. Here are the optimal build paths.
Mid Lane Build
#### Early Game (0-10 min)
- Luden's Echo — Grants ability power, mana, ability haste, and a passive that deals bonus magic damage to the target and nearby enemies on ability hit. Luden's Echo is Vex's ideal first item because the passive proc adds AoE burst to her combo, the magic penetration amplifies her burst and Gloom detonation damage, and the mana sustains her E-Q poke patterns in lane. The passive AoE also helps proc Electrocute in teamfights and adds splash damage when Vex dives with Shadow Surge.
- Sorcerer's Shoes — Grants magic penetration and movement speed. Sorcerer's Shoes provide the magic penetration Vex needs to maximize her burst damage against targets with base magic resistance, and the movement speed helps her position for Shadow Surge engages and roaming plays from mid lane.
#### Core Build (10-20 min)
- Shadowflame — Grants ability power and magic penetration that increases against low-health targets. Shadowflame synergizes perfectly with Vex's burst combo — after Shadow Surge's initial hit chunks the target, the increased magic penetration against low-health targets amplifies the recast damage, Personal Space damage, and Mistral Bolt damage that follow, making the full combo lethal against squishies.
- Zhonya's Hourglass — Grants ability power, armor, ability haste, and a Stasis active that makes Vex invulnerable for 2.5 seconds. Zhonya's Hourglass is essential for Vex because she dives into the enemy team with Shadow Surge — the Stasis active allows her to survive the initial burst of retaliation after her dive, buying time for her cooldowns to reset and for allies to follow up. Without Zhonya's, Vex's R engages are often suicidal.
#### Late Game (25+ min)
- Rabadon's Deathcap — Grants 120 ability power and a passive that increases total AP by 35%. Rabadon's Deathcap is essential for Vex because the 35% AP amplification dramatically increases her burst combo damage, Personal Space shield value (75% AP ratio), and Gloom detonation damage (25% AP ratio), pushing her one-shot threshold to reliably kill ADCs and other squishies with a single R-E-Q-W rotation.
- Void Staff — Grants ability power and 40% magic penetration. Void Staff ensures Vex's burst remains lethal against targets who have built magic resistance — without Void Staff, tanks and bruisers with even moderate MR can survive Vex's full combo, preventing Shadow Surge resets and stranding her in the enemy team.
- Banshee's Veil — Grants ability power, magic resistance, and a spell shield that blocks the next enemy ability. Banshee's Veil protects Vex from pick-off abilities that would prevent her from engaging with Shadow Surge — the spell shield blocks abilities like hooks, stuns, and silences that would otherwise cancel her ultimate or interrupt her dive.
Situational Items
- Stormsurge — Provides ability power, magic penetration, and bonus damage on burst combos — an alternative to Shadowflame that rewards Vex's all-in burst pattern with additional damage when she procs the passive off her R-E-Q-W rotation.
- Mejai's Soulstealer — Provides stacking AP on champion takedowns — excellent for snowballing Vex who gets early kills with Shadow Surge resets, as each kill adds permanent AP that makes subsequent resets even more devastating.
- Morellonomicon — Provides ability power, health, and grievous wounds on ability damage — essential against teams with heavy healing, especially since Vex's AoE abilities and Gloom detonations apply grievous wounds to multiple enemies in teamfights.
- Blackfire Torch — Provides ability power, mana, ability haste, and burn damage — an alternative first item for longer games where sustained damage and ability haste are more valuable than Luden's burst proc.
Highest Win Rate 3-Item Combinations
The highest win rate build is Luden's Echo + Sorcerer's Shoes + Shadowflame, which provides Luden's Echo's AoE passive proc and mana for laning, Sorcerer's Shoes' flat magic penetration for early burst, and Shadowflame's scaling magic penetration that amplifies kill potential against poked-down targets. This three-item spike at approximately 20 minutes gives Vex enough burst to one-shot ADCs and mid laners with a Shadow Surge into E-Q-W rotation, enabling the chain resets that define her teamfight identity.
Ability Priority
Mid Lane: Q > W > E
- Mistral Bolt (Q) — Max first. Each rank increases the damage from 70 to 250 (+70% AP) while reducing the cooldown from 8 to 4 seconds. Q max first provides Vex's strongest poke, waveclear, and most frequent damage source — the 4-second cooldown at rank 5 allows for rapid poke rotations in lane and multiple casts during extended fights. The 70% AP ratio makes each rank increasingly impactful as Vex builds ability power.
- Personal Space (W) — Max second. Each rank increases the damage from 80 to 240 (+30% AP) and the shield from 50 to 150 (+75% AP), while reducing the cooldown from 16 to 12 seconds. W max second increases Vex's survivability and close-range burst — the 75% AP shield ratio means the shield grows significantly with AP purchases, and the damage increase amplifies her all-in combo when she dives with Shadow Surge. The reduced cooldown means more frequent fear procs when empowered by Doom.
- Looming Darkness (E) — Max last. Each rank increases the damage from 50 to 130 and the slow from 30% to 50%, while the AP ratio scales from 40% to 60%. The cooldown remains 13 seconds at all ranks. E is maxed last because its primary value comes from applying Gloom marks and the slow, which are effective at rank 1 for combo setup. The damage increase per rank is the lowest of Vex's abilities, and the fixed cooldown means maxing it doesn't improve uptime.
Level-by-level order: Q, W, E, Q, Q, R, Q, W, Q, W, R, W, W, E, E, R, E, E.
Summoner Spells
Mid Lane
- Flash — Flash is essential on Vex because while Shadow Surge provides engage, she has no escape ability. Flash is her only tool for dodging critical skillshots, escaping ganks, and repositioning after a failed R dive. Flash also enables offensive Flash-W plays that fear nearby enemies with Doom empowerment, setting up kills in lane and teamfights.
- Ignite — Ignite provides kill pressure at level 6 and throughout the game, essential for securing kills during Shadow Surge dives. The bonus true damage ensures targets die within the 6-second window for Shadow Surge reset, and the grievous wounds cut healing from champions who might otherwise survive Vex's burst. Ignite is the most popular and highest win rate summoner spell choice (~54% WR).
- Teleport (Alternative) — Teleport allows Vex to recall for items without losing waves and return to lane quickly, and enables cross-map plays with Shadow Surge from side lanes. Teleport is stronger in matchups where Vex cannot find kill opportunities with Ignite.
Playstyle Tips
Early Game / Laning Phase (0-14 min)
Vex's early game in mid lane focuses on poking with Mistral Bolt for waveclear and trade damage while managing Doom 'n Gloom's cooldown to punish enemy dashes, building toward the massive level 6 power spike when Shadow Surge transforms her into a lethal all-in threat.
Start Q (Mistral Bolt) level 1 for early poke and waveclear — the wide initial hitbox makes it reliable for hitting both minions and the enemy laner in one cast. Take W (Personal Space) level 2 for the shield and close-range damage if the enemy trades into you, or for waveclear if you need to push. Take E (Looming Darkness) level 3 to complete your combo — E applies Gloom and slows, Q detonates the mark and deals burst, and W provides a shield and additional damage if they're in range.
The fundamental Vex trading pattern is: E (Looming Darkness) on the enemy to apply Gloom and slow, then immediately Q (Mistral Bolt) to detonate the Gloom mark for bonus damage. This E-Q combo deals significant damage from a safe distance and applies passive pressure that zones enemies off CS. When Doom is ready, use E or W empowered by Doom to fear the enemy, then follow with Q while they're feared for guaranteed damage.
Watch for enemy dashes in lane — every time the enemy dashes (Yasuo E, Katarina E, LeBlanc W, etc.), they get marked with Gloom. Follow up with Q or an auto-attack to detonate the mark for 40-150 (+25% AP) bonus damage and reduce Doom's cooldown by 25%. Against dash-heavy matchups, this passive damage adds up significantly and gives Vex a massive advantage in extended trades.
At level 6, Shadow Surge gives Vex kill threat on any target below 60-70% health. The kill combo is R (Shadow Surge hit) → E (Looming Darkness on arrival) → Q (Mistral Bolt) → W (Personal Space) → Ignite. If Doom is ready, use the empowered W on arrival to fear the target, guaranteeing the rest of your combo lands. The total burst from R + E + Q + W + Electrocute + Ignite is enough to kill any squishy champion from 60% health.
Mid Game & Teamfights (14-25 min)
Mid-game Vex with Luden's Echo and Shadowflame completed is a terrifying engage mage who can pick off priority targets from 2500+ units away with Shadow Surge, then chain resets through the enemy team as each kill refreshes her ultimate for the next dive.
Vex's mid-game strategy revolves around looking for Shadow Surge picks on isolated targets or flanking teamfights with her ultimate to reach the backline. With Luden's Echo and Shadowflame, Vex's full R-E-Q-W rotation deals enough damage to one-shot ADCs and mid laners, and the reset mechanic means a single kill can snowball into a team wipe.
In mid-game teamfights, Vex should position behind her frontline and look for Shadow Surge angles on priority targets. Wait for the enemy team to use their key defensive abilities before committing R — Zhonya's, heal, barrier, and hard CC used on allies means those tools won't be available to stop your dive. Once you commit with Shadow Surge, immediately E-Q-W on the target with Doom empowerment if available for the fear, and use Zhonya's Hourglass after your burst if you're being focused. If the target dies and R resets, dash to the next priority target before the enemy team can react. The key is target selection — always aim R at the target you can kill, not the tank you can't burst through.
Late Game (25+ min)
Late-game Vex with Rabadon's Deathcap and full build is a hyper-scaling mage-assassin whose Shadow Surge one-shots squishies from 3000 units away and whose chain resets can single-handedly win teamfights by diving through the entire enemy backline one target at a time.
In the late game, Vex's AP combined with Rabadon's Deathcap pushes her full combo damage past 2000 against squishy targets, guaranteeing one-shots on ADCs and supports for Shadow Surge resets. Personal Space's shield at full build absorbs over 500 damage, giving Vex surprising durability during her dive chains.
Position with your team and look for Shadow Surge picks before every objective fight. In the late game, catching any squishy target with R is often a death sentence, turning a 5v5 into a 5v4 before the fight even begins. During teamfights, wait for the enemy team to group and for key defensive abilities to be used before committing Shadow Surge into the backline. After each kill and reset, reassess the fight — only continue diving if you can kill the next target. If the fight turns unfavorable, use Zhonya's Hourglass to survive and let your team clean up. A well-played Vex can dash through 3-4 targets in a single teamfight, resetting Shadow Surge on each kill for a pentakill-level cleanup.
Matchups
Mid Lane
#### Favorable
- Yone — Vex dominates Yone (~60% WR). Yone's entire kit revolves around dashing — Spirit Cleave dash, Soul Unbound dash, and Fate Sealed engage all trigger Gloom marks and can be interrupted by Doom's fear. Every time Yone uses his E to engage on Vex, she fears him with Doom-empowered W, detonates his Gloom mark for bonus damage, and chunks him while he's feared. Yone cannot function against Vex's anti-mobility kit.
- Qiyana — Vex beats Qiyana (~57% WR). Qiyana relies on Audacity's dash to close the gap and Supreme Display of Talent's mobility for assassination combos, but every dash triggers Gloom and Doom's fear interrupts her engage attempts. Vex's W shield and fear give her survivability against Qiyana's burst, and Qiyana's melee range means she must walk into Vex's E-Q poke range to farm.
- Yasuo — Vex beats Yasuo (~56% WR). Yasuo's Sweeping Blade dashes through minions constantly, triggering Gloom marks every few seconds and keeping Doom's cooldown perpetually reduced. Yasuo literally cannot lane against Vex without being punished for his core mechanic. Wind Wall does not block Vex's W or the fear from Doom, and Yasuo's melee range forces him into Personal Space's damage zone.
#### Even
- Syndra — Vex fights approximately even against Syndra (~51% WR). Syndra is an immobile mage who rarely triggers Gloom, negating Vex's anti-mobility advantage. Syndra's Scatter the Weak stun outranges Vex's combo, and her raw burst damage from Unleashed Power can match Vex's all-in. The matchup is decided by who lands their crowd control first — Syndra wins if she stuns Vex before Shadow Surge, Vex wins if she lands R and bursts Syndra before she can react.
- Ahri — Vex fights approximately even against Ahri (~51% WR). Ahri's Spirit Rush dashes do trigger Gloom, but her range and mobility make her difficult to pin down. Ahri can dodge Vex's E and Q with Spirit Rush, but using dashes near Vex marks her for bonus damage. When Spirit Rush is down, Vex dominates the lane, but when it's available, Ahri can outmaneuver Vex's combo.
#### Unfavorable
- Brand — Vex loses to Brand (~43% WR). Brand is entirely immobile, never triggering Gloom, and his long-range poke with Pillar of Flame and Sear outranges Vex's E-Q combo. Brand's Pyroclasm bounces deal devastating damage in close range, punishing Vex if she dives with Shadow Surge. Brand also outscales Vex in raw AoE damage and doesn't need to be in range for Vex's W fear.
- Annie — Vex loses to Annie (~46% WR). Annie is another immobile mage who never triggers Gloom, eliminating Vex's passive advantage. Annie's point-and-click Disintegrate stun is unavoidable and sets up Summon: Tibbers' burst, which can kill Vex before she can react with Personal Space. Annie's Flash-Tibbers engage is faster than Vex's Shadow Surge and doesn't require a skillshot to land.
- Anivia — Vex loses to Anivia (~47% WR). Anivia is immobile and doesn't trigger Gloom, but her Rebirth passive means Vex cannot secure kills for Shadow Surge resets — even if Vex lands a perfect combo, Anivia revives in egg form. Anivia's Crystallize wall blocks Vex's Shadow Surge dash path, and Glacial Storm's persistent AoE zone control makes it dangerous for Vex to dive in.
Best Synergy Partners
Vex pairs best with champions who provide engage and crowd control to set up her Shadow Surge picks, or who have frontline presence to protect her in teamfights and follow up after her dive:
- Jarvan IV — Jarvan IV's Cataclysm traps enemies inside terrain, creating a perfect scenario for Vex to Shadow Surge into the ring and fear everyone with Doom-empowered W. Enemies trapped in Cataclysm cannot escape Vex's burst combo, and the combined AoE of Cataclysm plus Vex's E-Q-W rotation melts entire teams in objective fights.
- Leona — Leona's Zenith Blade engage and Shield of Daybreak stun lock down targets long enough for Vex to land Shadow Surge and follow with her full burst combo. Leona's Solar Flare provides additional AoE stun that groups enemies together for multi-target Looming Darkness fears. Leona's tankiness provides the frontline that lets Vex safely look for R angles without being engaged on.
- Alistar — Alistar's Headbutt-Pulverize combo knocks enemies into the air and stuns them, providing guaranteed setup for Vex's Shadow Surge engage. Alistar's Unbreakable Will makes him an unkillable frontline that absorbs enemy cooldowns, ensuring they have fewer tools to stop Vex's dive. The combined CC chain of Alistar plus Vex's fear exceeds 3 seconds of lockdown.
Recent Patch Changes
Vex's current state in Patch 16.6 reflects a strong position as a mid lane burst mage and anti-mobility specialist — her 52.0% win rate in mid with a 2.7% pick rate and 3.3% ban rate in Emerald+ place her in S Tier, indicating that the Gloomist is a powerful and popular pick who excels in the current meta where mobile champions like Yone, Yasuo, and Katarina are prevalent.
The Electrocute Domination build with Sorcery secondary has established itself as the dominant rune configuration, rewarding Vex players who land E-Q-W combos with immediate burst that secures kills for Shadow Surge resets. The Luden's Echo into Shadowflame into Zhonya's Hourglass build path provides the optimal balance of burst damage for one-shots, magic penetration for squishy targets, and survivability for dive engages. Vex's dominant matchups against Yone (60%) and Yasuo (56%) confirm her identity as the premier anti-mobility mage who punishes dash-reliant champions with fear and bonus damage, while her struggles against immobile control mages like Brand (43%) and Annie (46%) highlight her weakness when her Doom 'n Gloom passive finds no dashes to punish.
